This is crazy. I've never done this before in my life - always paid mechanics to do it. I have been following these instructions, and I actually found that the last mechanic who worked on it had the fuel lines routed incorrectly, causing a kink in the longer fuel line. Not only did I learn how to do this, but I was able to fix another problem.

ONCE AGAIN ~ Mr Steve = YOU Have Guided My Uneducated ASS Twords The LIGHT OF WEEDEATER BLISS ! I'v got a FS 50 C & Iv been Wondering HOW IN THE HELL To Adjust The Dam Throttle Cable (Literally 1/2 Of The Throttle Is Free Play Rite Now) - And It Makes Me Sick ! I Do My Best To Keep My 7 Weedeaters AS CLOSE TO BRAND NEW Condition & Working Order As I Possibly Can, but The Throttle On My Stihl Had Me Nervous, Iv never tore into That machine before .... YOU Are A HUGE HELP To Myself And Every Other Weekend Weedeater Worrior ! . . . I don't know what it is about Weedeaters ~ But I CAN'T Get Enough Of Um ! I used to race dirt bikes (Racing Was My LIFE & Dreams) & I had to give that up - after that,, I picked up a 2 stroke Weedeater (Loving The Smell Of It) & I haven't been able to leave Any of them alone ever since ! Thank You for Helping Me Keep Them All Running In TIP TOP Shape Steve ! I'll shut up & stop rambling on now, CHEERS From Potlatch Idaho !

Either you’ve invented and built a badass weed-eater “car wash”, or your area has the kindest grass ever, but my Stihl hasn’t look half as clean since after it’s first trim and I hose mine down with a quick brush and rag, after each use. It still looks and acts as if you put a couple handfuls of grass clippings into a gallon of superglue and painted the whole trimmer. Being serious tho, your videos have been a ton of help a ton of times. Tks Pal!

I have had an FS-45 Stihl Trimmer since 2001. Just did my first tune up on it in 2021. Just the plug and air filter didn't change the fuel filter. The main thing I do is make sure it is totally out of gas for winter storage. Run it until all gas is out of the carb. I use the stihl oil for the gas mix too. It is a great machine.

One of the best, if not the best U-Tube videos that I have seen. Firstly, the presentation required thirteen minutes and you took exactly that time: No adlibbing, no foolish comments/remarks that are useless and time consuming. Obviously you gave prior thought to what you were going to share and how. Unlike a lot of other presenters you did not get in front of the camera and then start to think about what you are going to present. So many presenters cause a ten minute presentation to go on for twenty and thirty minutes. Well done on a clear, succinct and very instructive presentation.

You're my hero Stever. I could not get my Stihl FS 45 to work after spending hours on it. I got the $13 tune-up kit from Amazon and then spent 45 minutes replacing the spark plug, fuel line, fuel filter, air filter, and carburetor (in between taking sips from my 24 oz MGD). Started up on the 3rd try. Many thanks.

This was excellent! I got the parts this morning (plus a primer bulb) and did the tune up just as you showed. It went very smoothly. It now runs like a champ. Your comments got me over the tight spots to watch out for. NO FRUSTRATION, NO UNNECESSARY PARTS REMOVED, THE RIGHT TOOLS, JUST SMOOTH SAILING!!! Excellent video, perfect close-ups for the details. I have to see what you have to help me now tune up the chain saw.

Hey, I was doing a tune up on my fs 38 watching this video. I was never very good with small engines. Watching your videos for the last 3 years has helped me save money. I found a 15 year old Poulan p3314 chainsaw in the garbage. After asking the home if I could have it I took it home, bought a new carb for $50 installed it with a plug and filter and it runs great. $300 saved. It's a great little back up when I am out using my Husqvarna 455.

Bought my Stihl trimmer 12 years ago. Embarrassed to say I never tuned it up but didn't use it that much ( I had a kid doing the yard for several years). It was running bad. Would die if I gave it too much gas or if I turned it at any angle. Watched your video. Your close-in camera work was very well done and helpful. Did the tuneup. Also bought new gas and oil. Now it runs great. Thanks for the help!

The way I replaced the fuel filter was that I pulled the tank. You have to pull the pull cord assembly, and undo a couple of screws and the two fuel lines if you don't want mess with pulling the carb. Thank you for posting this video you are awesome every time I watch a video of yours I learn something!

Hum cool stuff this. Stihl relevant after so many years cause I own a Stihl fs38. As to pulling and replacing the fuel filter via the tank inlet, it can be done. I did it by bending a loop in the end of a piece of soft wire and curving the wire to fit the contour of the tank. I snagged the filter and carefully pulled it out the top of the tank and grabbed the fuel line just behind the filter, popped off the ole filter, inserted the new one, and let the filter and line settle back into place. Surprisingly enough the rubber line is supple enough to stretch.

It's a good idea to clean the spark arrestor screen too. If it gets clogged with carbon your weed wacker won't run properly. I take it off and burn the carbon off with a torch. Great videos, I love your channel - very informative and saves me $$. Thanks!

My uncle gave me a not running Stihl weed eater in 2021. It has sat under the shed ever since. After watching your video last night this morning I pulled the weed eater out and went to work on the carburetor under the guidance of "your spoken words". And I got a pleasant surprise that I wasn't expecting. That weed eater fired off on the 5 pull, and it sat there an idle its ass off until I turned it off.. Thanks Man for being articulate enough to make me pay attention.

Hello! Your videos are so helpful, and you are now my go-to when I have a question about maintenance or repair on my Stihl products. A question though...I have a Stihl FS 85 weed eater that for the life of me, I can't seem to get started. It started the last time I used it (2 months ago, fresh fuel mix), so I thought, maybe the gas went bad during our hot spell even though it has Stabil in it. Fresh gas didn't change anything, so I've replaced all fuel lines, fuel and air filters, the carb, the spark plug, cleaned the spark arrest screen, changed out the gas cap, and checked the ignition module to assure there's a spark to the plug. I even bought the expensive 50:1 fuel mix from our saw shop -just to be sure my fuel mix wasn't the issue. The switch is on and engaged, the primer bubble fills nicely, the tank is full...What else have I not checked/replaced? I keep thinking I have missed some very basic thing, -but what?!?...Sigh. Any ideas?

Is your killswitch broken? Do you have strong compression? Those are the best guesses I have - new switch or new piston ring.

Are you sure you are getting spark? Is the piece/spring inside the spark plug boot missing? Have you checked compression? Bore scope in through spark plug hole to see that the piston is indeed moving and not locked up or rod broken? I see this is from a year ago...so i'll assume the unit was replaced, fixed, or now working, but the mystery is killing me...LOLOL

Great video as always but you don't need to pull the carb for the fuel filter. You can make a special hook tool out of a piece of wire hanger. It needs to be a little long and has a bend in it so it usually takes a couple of tries to get it just right the shape to reach down in the tank and hook the fuel line and pull the filter out through the filler. This will work on most Stihl fuel tanks, some may need to be a little longer than others.

I would never “fish” that fuel filter out through the gas cap. Of course it’s possible but it’s harder. Possibly damaging the fuel line. The proper way is through the opening under the carb.

This video helped me replace my Stihl FS 45 carburetor. My weed eater had not been cranked in over 3 years. After following all steps it cranked immediately! The only tool i used differently was I had a Miller Lite instead of a Budweiser.
