How to do a Gemba Walk

In an earlier video, I answered the question, ‘What is Going to the Gemba?’ In this video, I summarize that one and go deeper into how to do a Gemba Walk.
Gemba is a Japanese term that means ‘actual place’.
‘Going to the gemba’ means heading for where the work is done, the value is created, or the problem has occurred.
A Gemba Walk is taking the time to walk through your office, factory, shop, or warehouse and watch how things are being done, and talk with people who are doing it.
Here is my 7-step process:
1. Plan
2. Prepare
3. Schedule
4. Observe
5. Recognize
6. Opportunities
7. Actions
The Questions you can ask on your Gemba Walk
• What:
o are you working to achieve?
o will done look like?
o are the quality standards you are working towards?
• What:
o are your schedule (and budget) targets?
o is your status?
• What
o setbacks have you had?
o obstacles are blocking you?
o concerns do you have?
• How:
o are you progressing?
o Can you improve your process?
o Do you get help if you need it?
• What:
o Support do you need?
o Materials or equipment would help you?

Great questions! A mindless gemba walk is meaningless. The true aim is to develop Profound Knowledge (see Deming) by applying all of the following: 1. Theory 2. Practice 3. Reality (Gemba). Always imagine the ideal, then practice the steps of the Process of ongoing improvements from the Theory of Constraints. Finally, in order to balance Short term vs Long term thinking pay attention to all the layers of the Iceberg model simultaneously: events/transactions, patterns, structure, vision/scenarios, mindset/purpose and spirituality (my contribution). The above will create an environment for Respect for People. In order to sustain ie "hold the gains" of such Gemba walk efforts, add to the above the Intent-based leadership by David Marquet via Cascaded Leadership (Socio-technological theory) that will move human behaviours from Capability Immaturity Model to Capability Maturity Model. Sue Dyer's book (construction industry) is a great read on Trust-based Leadership.
