How to do a hill start recovery in your 4WD.
I show you how to do a hill start recovery while going forward down a steep 4WD track. This technique we should all practice a few times a year, to keep your hill start recovery skill levels up.
You just never know when you could be put in a position, where you will have to perform a hill start recovery in your 4WD on a steep track.
It's important that you have the skills so you know how to do a hill start recovery, and get you out of potential trouble safely.
As four wheel drivers, there's a number of recovery skills that we need to know how to do.
The three different ways i have shown you of how to do a hill start recovery could happen to you at anytime, so make sure you practice them, and get comfortable with doing them.

It’s the third video in the row now that I’m amazed by that working handbrake of yours. I’ve gotta say I’m getting jealous

Thanks Tim also continuous downhill on the brakes you’ll eventually get to a gully and a river running through it , disc brakes can actually crack when quenched in cold river crossings

Mine being an auto Patrol I always stop as I get to a crest of a downhill slope, put it in 1st gear and continue on. The auto does tend to run away a fair bit therefore requiring more braking especially on a very steep downhill run which in turn causes 'the brake fade' that you were talking about, I have experienced it and it wasn't a great feeling. I do stop at a washout/flat ground to let them cool down (your tip from another video) but get a bit of radio chatter from the mates to get moving......lol. I'm still a novice when it comes to 4wdriving but try to play it safe especially on those steep High country tracks, they are no joke. Thanks for your tips on this one mate and on other videos they've come in handy many a times for me. Cheers.

Thanks mate. What a great lesson I learnt today. Can you please advise what to do if you are going downhill on a manual vehicle and now you have to reverse uphill ? Regards

Tim, thanks so much for doing all these education vids, did my course with Vic 4x4 last year and haven’t practised anything to reinforce the learnings, mainly due to Corona lockdown. But your vids really great and your advice to ‘Practice’ before you it in a real situation really made me think! Thanks so much, PS. Stubby, sticker & Calendar great 👍 Look fwd to more of your tips/education😊

So true to practice all type of 4x4 problems before it happens, saying that all four-wheel drives handle different these days, mine has the drum handbrake incorporated onto the back of the transfer box,so she not going know where when the handbrake is on.

Great Tim. Same same key start to reverse back down hill too hey. All techniques as you say, need practice until they are second nature.

Great vids Tim! And thank you for replying to all my comments, don't know how you do it. Can I ask what front recovery points you use? I like the red look. I have a couple of ironman front recovery points, but feel they may be a bit weak due to a two bolt system. Thanks again!
