G'day Greg, It is well worth keeping in touch with how to get out of a situation like this. Not much you can do with an auto. You cant stall them like a manual. @@timbates4wdadventures We had 2 damaged, both around the 2009~10 vintage and manuals, so not the newer versions. We are slowly moving our fleet to automatics. There are a number of reasons to go to automatic, one being that we need to cater for all types of drivers and the new generation of drivers we are training don't often know how to drive a manual vehicle as they haven't had the opportunity to learn on one. So sadly in a few years, the manual will be a thing of the past for us.

G'day Ethan, You dont have to practise the first few times on a steep hill like i used. Start on a less grade hill just to get the feel of what you have to do, then work up after time to a steeper hill. Worth knowing how to do it though mate. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim.

Alex Cross Gday Alex, With your auto transmission. Rather than drive up or down steep hills. You would manually lock the transmission in either 1st or 2nd gear low range. Depending how steep the track is. If you leave it in drive, it then allows the transmission to change gears on its own. Take control and lock it in a gear yourself. Hope that helps mate. G'day Peter, Having a rear locker on still works well in reverse. Great way to get maximum traction. As far as pro's and con's for reduction gears. I don't have any Con's. They are wicked in any form of four wheel driving. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.

That would depend a lot on what sort of trouble you are in and how steep the tracks is you are stuck on. You might not be able to get out. Just have to weigh that one up at the time. But, thanks for asking though. Cheers Tim.

G'day Matthew, No mate, rolling back in neutral while on the brakes has got danger written all over it. If your foot were to slip off the brake pedal, your 4wd will take off backwards very quickly. Not to mention if you're on the brakes too much and the brakes get to hot and begin to fad. Always have it in gear, no matter if going up hill or down. Reverse gear in low range will still provide engine braking the same as going up hill. Just feather the brakes when reversing down and let the reverse gear do most of the engine braking. Ended up doing to down hill clutch start in reverse but man, still haunts me on uphill runs. Hasn’t happened in my hilux yet so fingers crossed. It had to have been weight. Heavy car and 4 adults.

Jim Mulholland I think a combination. Really steep, loose ground, already lost traction, heavy car loaded with people.
