Me as a Maiko (( in preparation to be a geisha)) i can totaly say that is not the geisha bun. But she said that it's a modern geisha bun so it can work for the title.

On top of all else not seeing how you tucked the ends in this was seriously irritating. Really not Geisha, sadly not that useful as anything else. Have a word with the editor.

I am gonna have to be the one here (but hey someone's gotta a be) and be a tad offended. First of all let's get the record straight (so to speak), this is not my account, this is my husband's so the platinum blond dude on the photo is not me, i am not Scandinavian, i am Japanese and the name is Minoru (Min for the friends) born and raised in Kyoto, and just to avoid any misinterpretation in my use of english pronouns, i am a man as well (hence the quotes around "straight" but this is off topics. Now just being Japanese doesn't in itself really gives me the right to say anything about that video because it is not really offending my Japanese sensibility, and i am not that sensitive to begin with. However i do so happen to be the son, grand son great grand son and great grand grand son of four generations of Geisha, My great great grand mother was a Geisha in Nagasaki, my great grand mother as well and so was my grand mother who started there and then a little thing happened called Mark III or Fat Man and my grand mother who survived went to Kyoto with my mother in infancy, and settled herself in the Kagai (Geiko district) of Ponto-cho (mature Geisha are called Geiko in Kyoto, trainees are called Maiko) where my mother was raised to become a Geisha herself and then i the 70s i was born, the son of a Geisha who later on moved to the Kagai of Asakusa and then Akasaka in Tokyo where i was partially raised. That's for the background, now for the topic itself. A bun is a bun it doesn't need to be called Geisha just to make it sound cool or exotic, especially since this couldn't be more inaccurate. The last thing about a Geisha's hairstyle which makes it so it the Bun because this is the one part which changes the most. Also there is no such thing as a Geisha hairstyle, Geisha were just wearing the same types of hairstyle every woman in Japan wore in the days the Geisha started existing about 400 years ago. Westerners may believe that this is a Geisha hairstyle because this is the only idea of it they have but if you look at wedding, you will see that the bride spots a similar haire style and so do traditional dancers, actors, musicians, etc, who have no link whatsoever with the profession of Geisha. So that is the two biggest inaccuracies so far, there is no such thing as a Geisha Hairstyle and this is not a Geisha bun, this is a Bun (clearly western) and no Japanese on the planet would ever consider this even remotely Japanese in appearance. The hairstyle which Geisha spot is called a Shimada, it can be in different style. Taka Shimada, Tsubushi Shimada, Marumage Shimada etc, depending on the shape of the Bun (which in Japanese we call Mage (read as in magay without the final I sound). Also a Geisha's hairstyle is everything but loose, it is extremely stiff because it is lacquers with oil which solidifies when it dries giving it the consistency of cardboard. You can blow a ventilator in front of a Geisha at full power and her hair won't move i guarantee you that. This is the reason why Geisha have shiny hair, this is all the oil wax on it, and the fact that almost each hair is arranged to be so smoothly combed it creates almost a mirror shine. And of course the fact that unlike the lovely model on this video, Geisha have extremely black (many Geisha have the hair died even blacker) and extremely straight hair (ironed actually with actual iron heated in the fire) which adds to the shine. The next thing and many people might not know that, Geisha (adult professional Geisha) wear a wig, so the hairstyle you all think about is created by professional traditional wig makers using real human hair. I do not give a crap about cultural appropriation, i couldn't care less if a blond scandinavian or a Black African or any other ethnicity wants to have a traditional Japanese hairstyle, i think culture is supposed to be appropriated because this is how it spreads and evolves and there is nothing wrong with it. (except for the cosplayers whi pretend to be actual Geisha, or Black or Indian that is just wrong) but it has to be done with tact and remain authentic or at least done by people who have done their homework and did their research. What is a tad irritating about this video is that you borrow (read appropriate) the name Geisha but then create a hairstyle which has NOTHING to do with actual Geisha. Geisha is not a style it is a profession, it is the name of women, like my mother, my sister and 4 generation before them in my family tree alone, and 400 years of history. This deserved a bit of respect. Don't you think ? Here is how an actual Geisha Hairstyle is created by actual Japanese professionals for actual modern Japanese Geisha kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hKpomLSEltnOpp8.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iK1mmbaL1Z-ne4U.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qN6FjJiYnMzPiqM.html
