Thank You for this wonderful tip. I've been searching for this forever in Inventor

I LOVE this trick for rivet placement. I played around a bit and tried it without creating a dummy part. I just opened a part in the assembly and created a new sketch, then dropped a bunch of sketch points. I dropped each point centered on each rivet hole. From there it was the same. I tried to use iMates to snap the rivets to the face and center of hole but couldn't get it to work. Your trick works with any component (even a sub-assembly?) without setting up iMates. Thanks again. I plan to subscribe from home, BTW.

Funny part is, if you make a dummy surface, and pattern it, then selecting pattern in assembly works, but not with point geometry. I have forgotten about this modelling view select. Thank you for reminding. always went via longer process of modelling.

That is good to know that it is possible to take it from modelling tab I have been using it when making holes and then in assembly adding bolts but then I can just hover over the hole to select pattern as it is feature.

I'm a new user of Inventor (>10 years of Solidworks) but this video helped me get the job done, so Thank You! Since I'm far from knowing all of Inventor functionality, instead of this sort of time consuming workaround of creating "dummy" parts, sketches, and work features (then picking it in the modeling browser - Why? Seriously?), it'd be great if the software recognized a pattern from a part in which a user could derive an assembly part pattern. As long as the software recognizes the pattern, it shouldn't matter that the assembly pattern is derived from a part feature pattern. That would be a pretty useful tool to add a lot of fasteners at the end of an assembly (to make your BOM accurate) in a pretty short amount of time. This is the very function a 3D modeling software should excel at and makes Inventor seem a little clunky and has me asking a lot of questions.

I found a slightly more streamlined workflow. Instead of making a dummy part, simply create the same exact sketch with points, a starting work point, sketch patterned etc. in one of the parts. I put the sketch pattern on the sheet metal part with the rivet holes. You still need to hit the modeling tab in the design tree when you're doing the component pattern. As always, I LOVE your tutorials!

Good idea, but your method does not work on patterned objects without holes :)

Thanks! Strange that Inventor is still not offering non-uniform assembly pattern

Clear example where NX/UG shines. This functionality is built directly into the pattern feature, as well as several other methods for defining non-uniform patterns. You can even go as far as giving a .CSV/.xlsx file with spacings listed, all in one dialogue box.

Spent 30 minutes struggling to create a pattern along a curved path within an assembly...then I thought, "Maybe Neil has something for some peon like me?" BOOM, you do....you do... I appreciate your work! #tickybox

Can Any one get this to work with circular features? Around an axis, with the inner face, facing in. I'm guessing not.

You can do a rectangular pattern along a spline or curve and change orientation accordingly but it is still an evenly spaced pattern.
