How To Do A Super Fast Water Change On A Massive Fish Tank With African Cichlid Aquarium Fish
We all know that cleaning aquariums can take a long time. Depending on the size fish tank or the quantity of fish tanks it can be even longer. For my 220 Gallon Lake Malawi Predator Hap Tank, I have gone through multiple methods of cleaning and draining it. I used a Python which is great and I still use it. A submersible water pump which I no longer use. The reason I don't is when you remove the pump from the tank it gets water everywhere. and the hose attached to the pump can be hard to work with. I have a new method that works wonders for me. I built a DIY PVC overflow that Attaches to a hose and an external water transfer pump which then drains to the sink with the exit hose. I got the idea on the PVC overflow project from none other than IFG. plus building something on your own to use for your aquarium maintenance is very rewarding. It takes around 15 minutes to drain my 220 gallon aquarium to about 75%. My water volume is less since I have the 3D background, but I must say that is pretty good. Once I drain the tank with the pump, I start to fill it back up. This is the perfect time to clean the glass or acrylic on the inside of the tank. once the tank is about 80% full, I then clean the sand bed to remove fish waste. DISCLAIMER: Gas pockets can form in your sand beds, so deep clean at your own risk. These gas pockets can be deadly. I personally haven't had any issues, but again do this at your own risk. Once I am done cleaning the sand bed, I top the tank off, turn the heaters, filters, and wavemakers back on. I like to add buffer as well. Since I am on a well, I dont need Seachem Prime, but if you are on city water, be sure to add Seachem Prime or Safe to de-chlorinate the water. To me it is all about speed. Cleaning large tropical fish aquariums or multiple fish tanks can be daunting. So finding ways to save time is well worth the money in the long run. I hope you found this video entertaining, informative and helpful.

Thanks for sharing.. I enjoy my water change time to just meditate. My w/c is 175 gallons weekly. I have a fitting on kitchen sink that hooks to 1" vinyl tubing for refilling and a 1" vinyl hose with a basket on inside tank end, that goes out back door for draining. I shut off electric to tank ( lights are on own timer and outlet ) and I get siphon draining and do maintenance/cleaning, as its draining. I then start to refill and add de-chlorinator as its refilling. I monitor the temp for any changes as its refilling. 45 luxurious minutes of me-time ! "OH YEAH"..

175 gallons at about 15ish. minutes to refill. I had considered a pump initially, but tried the 1" tubing for both drain and fill, and am pleased with the simplicity of it for me..

Thanks a lot dude! It doesn’t take long to build it, you won’t be sorry. The python is great, I still use mine. But having the large pump to drain all that water in 15 minutes is what I am talking about. And the pump is cheap. As always I appreciate you supporting my channel and watching the video.

This is cool. You can prime the machine from where you put the hose to sink i.e first prime the machine from the water out area and put the hose that is going to the sink. It will be quicker than using from inlet that you have designed. But this is definitely a job well done.

The system you've build is great yet you haven't explained how you did treat your new water. Is it the same room temperature? And do you have a chance to add some dechlorinater and stuff like that? With my 90 gallon tank I've figured that i put an extra hose (with another Fluval fx6 valve) on the output of the filter, the filter just pomps out the water to the drain. Works perfect yet I have trouble with new water. I've tried a rain barrel (about 50 gallons i suppose) attached to an FX4 to keep it filtered, on the same temperature as the aquarium and the possibility to add the dechlorinater, but all I end up with is blue-green bacteria build up in the rain barrel. Do you happen to know a solution for this problem so that the tank can be filled up with pre-handeled aquarium water? Because adding cold water is not an option (because the tap tap I have to use only provides cold water)...

So I made something similar but with out a pump. Cause I hate to waste water and electricity. I made mine with wider gauge pvc and pool hose. Since yours primes from the side and lower I put my T at the top with the ball at the stop above the aquarium and a ball valve at the bottom. I run the pool hose to my toilet or bath tub. Prime the pvc on the outside of the aquarium. I close the top ball valve and open the bottom one and it start the vacuum. In less than 5 minutes I can have my 75 gallon empty if I want but since I still have a vacuum in the line I just change my water changer to another aquarium open it up and go.
