I am a teacher of Swedish as a foreign language. Great video! I want to add that not only do we have double and long consonants, there is also the need for a slight pause after the vowel and before the double consonant. Since you are a Swede you do it perfectly. As a foreigner learning Swedish it's important to pronounce with the pause: Ä----PPLE or i Swenglish A---PPEL Also, we do not only have a hard time with pronuncing Z. The S is also in itself very different between the languages. The Swedish S is made by the tip of the tounge farther up front in the mouth, touching the teeth while pressing out quite a lot of air. The English S is when you have the tounge positioned a centimeter farther back and the tounge not touching the teeth. Also, in English, the very tip of the tounge is not engaged but the ROOF of the tip. Air is blown out but very much less. It sounds less like whisteling than the Swedish S. I usually say that the Swedish S is as sharp and cold as ice:) ABBA Agnetha has these very Swedish S' s.
@sayitinswedish
@sayitinswedish 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, a long plosive is realized by a pause. I didn't know the Swedish S was different though! Thanks for sharing. That might explain why Finns can hear if someone is a Fenno-Swede because of the S!

I always think it's such a bummer coming across a Swede on KZfaq etc and they mostly seem to have American accents. This may out me as a bit weird but I love the Swedish accent. There's no way I would attempt to imitate that accent though as my English one is already full of weirdness from the places I've lived over the years. Keep up the good work! really useful content.

Jeez...I have to play a heavy Swedish accent in a play. I'm TERRIBLE with accents!! I am half-Swedish/half-American, spent summers as a kid in Sweden. All your "big points" are 100% "right on". But as you speak, I hear so many tiny nuances that are difficult to define, much less pronounce. You probably figured out, my Mother never taught me Swedish & I grew up around American English speakers. She died years ago, but was the light of my life, a beautiful woman, through & through. I wish I could consult her now. Listening to you brings so much "back" (even that saying "back" would be "beck"). I struggled with your three "extra vowels" as a kid. In college, I LOVED linguistics, even though I'm TERRIBLE at learning other languages. Anyhow, listening to you is a very helpful refresher in the most obvious ways you point out; but I love hearing the subtlety you may not even be aware of. When I listen to you (and many other native Swedish speakers), it's like recognizing a beautiful symphony, but not having the musical training or education to explain why it's so wonderful or beautiful. But I DO hear, appreciate, and enjoy all the "notes"!! Last thing: my friends always told me my mother's accent was VERY STRONG -- but I NEVER heard it. It sounded like "perfect" English to my ear. But when her Swedish friends spoke English, their accents were loud and distinguished to my ear. I believe this is a common phenomenon with children who are raised by a non-native speaker. PS: these American actors pretending to be Swedes sound terrible!!😝

Yooooo I finally found another half Swede half American! Sorry about your mother, and I'm sorry she didn't teach you Swedish. My dad wasn't taught French by my grandfather, so I have an idea of what you went through. I'm in my 3rd year of learning French and it is still difficult, even though Swedish and English are very closely related to French. I hope you take up learning Swedish again, there are some great KZfaq channels out there that can help a lot :)))

Thanks for this video- very helpful! I also like the one you did on slang words. That's the weird thing, in my experience most people don't use that pitch accent, but the exaggerated "accent one", like I said in this video. This brings us to the error most learnings do, using the "accent two" on any Swedish word.

The interesting thing about the V-to-W-sound substitution is that Swedish doesn't have a W sound, it only have V-sounds. This doesn't transfer to their English, where it basically becomes the opposite. This one quirk is probably just because of how English is learned. There are a lot more W-words.

As an American with a Swedish mom, I think one thing the accent is good for is being very affable and disarming compared to other stronger spins like Scots and Russians give the English language. Swedes though may also have the higher % of English speakers that speak it so well, it sounds like picture perfect American or British English, but those who still show the Swedish accent definitely have their charms. And believe me, there's no shame for being in the latter category, as I am learning Portuguese, but not can't speak like a native Brazilian. Thankfully though, Brazil and Portugal are very welcoming cultures that get a kick out of foreigners learning their language. I may give them a chuckle the way I pronounce certain words, but all in all, they are always very patient and genuinely seem to appreciate your effort.

Some other things I've noticed Swedes do: We will, when pronouncing a word with a "y" vowel in it (e.g. "system"), use the Swedish pronunciation of that letter, even though it doesn't exist in Swedish. We distinguish vowels much more than an English native. In English unstressed vowels are often reduced to schwas, but we don't do that. We are more ok with some consonant clusters. So a word like "mechanism" will have three syllables in a Swedish accent while an English native would often use four. One thing that's perhaps outside the realm of an accent, but pretty crucial if you wanna sound like a Swede, is to get verb endings wrong. Start saying "it have...", "they goes", etc. It's rare that I meet someone who can consistently get those right.

No, the pronounciation of Swedish is not the same as old Norse, and although some of the Swedish actors had more of a Swedish accent, the other actors had a consistent Norse accent throughout. They did that very well. I can't, however, say if it would be an accurate accent or not but since it's consistent between actors, I trust they had a language consult at the set.

there is a noise in swedish that i have dubbed "the swedish frog-ish noise thing" i've asked so many people and apparently there are very few people like me who can make it without being swedish and i love the reaction when i pronounce something to a swedish friend with that noise they get weirdly excited lmao (idk how to explain the noise but think of saying the name linus in swedish and the part where your tongue touches the back of your teeth swedish people make kind of a eyyeyeye froggy noise, sorry for being so bad at explaining lol ;-;)
