In this video i go over the basics of doing a timing belt on a 3.8 (2003-2006) montero engine. This procedure is roughly the same for the 3.5 gen 3s and also shares some similarities with the Gen 2 3.5. I hope this helps you tackle this job on your own!

I've got a video doing this on the 6G74. Regarding the tensioner, the inch pounds rating is just to ensure that once it's all installed, your tensioner rod stays within the acceptable range (3.8-5.0mm in my case). You can do it without the special tool and a torque wrench; it's just trickier. I lost my tool and just used circlip pliers to apply torque to the tensioner pulley.

If we don’t feel confident enough to do this job would it help to simply remove the cover to expose the timing belt and tensioner and simply inspect it and make sure the tensioner is working properly? I understand you recommend changing it but would it be ok to inspect it and if it’s ok to keep it and only replace if actually looks wrong ? Anything to look for besides just something obvious? If mine looks good and seems to be in good condition I will hold off and take the risk until I can afford to pay a local Montero specialist I know to do it . Also while I have it exposed can I start it and listen and look for problems ? How can I know that it’s still lined up right and tight enough? What am I looking for to know it’s working properly?

Following along as I do the job live and just like you’re saying at around 23:00 my passenger side cam jumped one tooth and I’m having a hell of a time seating the belt while the marks are aligned. What happens is I think l I’ll have everything right on then I’ll go tighten the tensioner and that same cam moves as I introduce tension. I’m also having a real hard time just getting the belt on that last cam as well, any tips?
@montanamontero
@montanamontero 10 ай бұрын
i use some clamps to hold the belt to the cam and that usually prevents it from jumping around too much. another method is to have someone hold the cam with a 17mm wrench on the bolt head of the cam. i don't love that method because it can still move, but it does work.

So I put the belt on, set the preload and tightened the pulley, and once I did that the pin in tensioner slides effortlessly like you said, however once I do 2 turnovers of the engine the tensioner pin is really hard to pull… does that mean I messed it up somehow?

not necessarily, but i would double and triple check that you are tensioning the eccentric pulley correctly

One more question here. When you put in the new water pump assembly, how do you make sure it sits on the tube backside that has the rubber O ring ? Do you have to push it in or when you tighten the bolts, it glides on to it ?
@montanamontero
@montanamontero 2 ай бұрын
it kind of just falls into place, you need to lube it up and make sure that everything lines up, but then you just push it on and the bolt holes should line up. it should slide on before you put the bolts in

Crank bolt can be loosen up by a socket and breaker bar by leaning against something solid unplugged the spark wire just till it cranks but won’t start the engine. You have to make sure the orientation of the engine turning or else you can actually tighten ( break) or loosen… I have done this once on a Ford Ranger.

I change mine every 100,000 miles, all makes. I live in a dry ad hot area and they do fine with that. I've never seen a problem with them until about 150,000 miles (excessive cracks). If the Montero belt starts to tick at lower RPMs, but stops above 2500 rpms it is the tensioner failing. Stop driving it at that point for sure. The Gates and other quality brands (2 or 3) are good enough. I've had the cheapest ones fail after 20,000 miles. I have two 2003s each with 230,000 miles. I changed the timing kits last at 160,000 and 150,000 miles. Have owned them since 150/165,000 miles. Had 2 other Gen3s with 3.5L and also all previous gens also.
