Created by Neuro Acting founder Bryan Bounds, this video introduces you to the 'General' Alabama accent. NOTE TO ALABAMIANS: The world loves your accent and yes, admittedly, I'm going over the top with it, but it's a very effective way to learn an accent by pushing the envelope of the vocal changes in order to develop the muscle memory. Then with practice, you can bring it back to a more conversational level.
There's loads more Neuro Acting training for you to raise your game at neuroacting.com - including FREE short courses. Or maybe think about The Actor's Way if you want to learn a complete acting system. Visit www.neuroacting.com.

Great presentation. Growing up in rural Mobile, Alabama, this definitely represents the common tongue for the bulk of he people. After college, I moved Chicago and beyond, the one part of my Alabama accent which remains is the dropping of the g in ing. It takes a dedicated brain training and I continue to slide back into the accent when I become relaxed. Networkin, Debuggin, Routin, Programmin, etc. Beyond that, the only other indication is a slower delivery than anyone else.

Thank you for structuring this as a proper lesson with excercises and not some vlog with random tips. I originally had found your video over a year ago, but this month I had my first English class at uni (not that I need them, but they're mandatory here) and successfully fooled the teacher & classmates that I've actually been to the South hahaha, with them being curious and excited rather than annoyed at someone tryharding. I love the Southern accent. Maybe not as pronounced as in the video but this is the way I speak English now.

Thanks Pewin! I’m so glad you liked the structure of it. I can’t help myself: here’s your monologue that you can use to keep up with the Southern accent. It’s from the play “A Walk in the Woods” by Lee Blessing. HONEYMAN: I was almost arrested this morning. It was nothing. I threw a gum wrapper on the sidewalk. I threw this wrapper, and suddenly there was this little old man beside me, grabbing me. I thought he was a lunatic - he was yelling at me in German. Why did he yell in German? Do I dress like a German? He was trying to make me stop. I speeded up - I didn't know who he was. He yelled at me louder - in French this time. I stopped and stared at him. I didn't say anything, I just stared. He kept right on yelling, only he switched to Italian. This went on for a solid minute - like I was a bad child - all in Italian. Finally I broke in. I said, “I don't speak Italian,” and he went back to French. So I said, “I don't speak French,” and he went back to German. So I yelled back at him: “I don't speak French, German or Italian! I'm an American, damn it! What the hell do you want?!” And he turned and pointed at my gum wrapper. And then I saw he was a cop. He was a Swiss policeman. He had his hat in his hand, and he was so... old, that I... But there he was, in a uniform. He must have been going to his retirement party. And he tried to drag me back to this gum wrapper. He literally tried to drag me. I said, “Tell me what you want.” and he said, “Aufheben!” to the paper. “Aufheben!” which I found out later means “Pick it up.” Well, I didn't pick it up. I pulled my arm away. I wanted to say, “Look - I spend all day, every day, working to prevent the total destruction of every living thing on this planet. The whole planet. Even Switzerland. I'm trying to preserve the last few precious days of life you may have coming to you. But I can't do it if I'm not allowed to throw gum wrappers on the sidewalk. Do you understand? It's too much pressure! I can't worry about everything!” But I didn’t say that - I actually pushed him back, this little old man, and said, “Look, I’m a very important person.” (Beat.) I am turning into something here. Some kind of monster. Some kind of littering, old man-pushing, diplomatic... monster. Some special, newly created kind of... thing. (Beat.) What are we doing here? CIRCUMSTANCES: Honeymoon is a young American diplomat. He is speaking to his older Russian counterpart. To clear the air, these two superpower arms negotiators strike up a friendship in the evenings as they walk in the woods. In this moment, filled with embarrassment and exasperation, Honeymoon reveals to the experienced diplomat his job is changing him.

@@NeuroActing Yep, beautiful and interesting. Well, no shocker there - I met unforgettable Irish all over the States and every Irish family I spoke with in the UK either already had someone in America or was planning to move there or both. [r] is such a versatile sound. And perhaps a bit tricky to learn sometimes. I used to use the Oxford r quite a bit for a few years, for fun, and I grew up (and even now seem to be) surrounded with the Czech and German and Russian and, to a degree, also the French r's, together with some American ones . I stumbled on your video accidentally, but I could not resist when I saw it was on the Alabama accent. I loved it so much. I am a lifelong resident of northwest Alabama, but my mom is from Memphis. So, we have a bit of an AL-TN blend. I am a former kindergarten teacher and the entire time when you were speaking, I could only think of our librarian. She sounded exactly like this video. I have tried so hard to not drawl my words so much and to always pronounce “get”, “pen”, etc. as properly as possible because I taught phonics. It is really hard to explain why short e says “eh” but all the people around them prounounce “get” like “git” (which I hate-but must admit to slipping into when I am tired). I was so happy when you said that we speak slow but we do not think slow. hahaha! That gets old really quickly!! I love your accent and found this to be delightful!!!! We have our faults in the south, but I cannot imagine ever living anywhere else!! I could do without the stifling heat and mosquitos, though!!! Great video!!!!

American School of Acting in Yorkshire Hello, Bryan! Thank you so much for your kind reply! I am so happy to know that the Brits often love our accent!! I LOVE their accent as well. They always sound so cultured and intellectual. I am just happy someone is training actors for this accent. When I hear Scarlett O’Hara type accents it makes me cringe. I usually cannot even watch it. One of the best southern accents that I have heard was from the tc show True Blood. I loved Nelsan Ellis, but he is from Birmingham, so he is a natural of course! But there was an actor that sounded just like every single guy I knew from high school. It was the guy who played Jason Stackhouse and the actor’s name is Ryan Kwanten. Interestingly, he is from Australia. I have always thought that the reason actors get the southern accent wrong is because they drawl the end too much-as in “an” instead of “and”. I always feel we drawl the middle instead (at least in my section of Bama)-more like “ayahnd”. Of course there are plenty of folks who leave the “d” off, including me when I am tired. I had a new doctor who was from Philadelphia. He had just moved to Muscle Shoals which is my area. He said “well, you have definitely blown apart one myth I believed about southern speech.” I asked him what that was and he said “I have always heard how slow southerners speak, but I can barely keep up with you!!” You can tell from my messages I am a big talker! Haha. I will never change my accent and probably could not do it if I tried. I am just so grateful someone is helping make the southern accent much more relatable for real southerners!! Good luck with those students, have a wonderful week and..... ROLL TIDE!!!!!

To me this sounds close to a normal movie Alabama accent. The accents I usually hear around town are similar(Lee County Alabama), but not as over the top as this video. Would be better if it the words weren't drawn out quite so much. Also, in the I thought I was going to go downtown sentence, it would be more common to hear I thought I was gonna go downtown. We do tend to cut down words when we can. This accent is better than a lot I have heard. TV shows that have the fake Southerners make us cringe. The speed of the speaking was about dead on. Tone down the drawl just a tad(a very little bit), and I think it would be near perfect.

Dude from walking dead, Andrew Lincoln.... He did pretty well but for the most part I agree. Brad Pitt in Inglorious Basterds was great too tho. The word gonna is dead on. I never thought about it but I don't think I've ever said I'm going to somewhere. I'm gunna is more it. We cut words like a warm knife through butter. We also tend to blend words. I got her a gift would sound like I gotter a gift.

@@melissablevins4429 If you're real country you would just say "I'm fixin' to go downtown," but in the "I thought I was gonna go" sentence it would never be "going to" it would be gonna/gunna like you say. I had a high school student in Valley who would refer to the day after today as "tommer" I died laughing every time.

Grew up in rural Maryland where everyone had a slight tinge of a country accent, but it was more hillbilly than charming south. I’ve always been obsessed with the Deep South and the way they speak, so excited to try and learn this!! My family always spoke real proper, as they considered themselves intellectuals. But I think I watched too much Andy Griffith as a kid😂 my speech is always slightly more southern than theirs

Lived in alabama my whole life and it's really a matter of where in bama you're from but it's fairly accurate. I've heard some real southern zingers and some really proper speaking, i'm somewhere in the middle.

I came here expecting to find the usual stereotypes, but it was really good. Obviously, a state that reaches from the Gulf of Mexico to Tennessee doesn't have one absolute accent, but the presenter offers some pretty good common threads. I'm from Birmingham and you can tell what part of town someone is from by the accent. For example, Mountain Brook and Homewood typically have a less rhotic accent. Meanwhile, if you go out to Trussville or Gardendale, you'll often hear a more nasal, clipped accent.

Otter InBham thanks for your kind words! I could only generalize with my Yorkshire students, but I’m glad I generally got there. And I have a sneaking suspicion that Alabama has the most favored accent of all the states, judging by international viewers who’ve seen this.

This is great. I've travelled a lot, and sometimes when I'm in an uncomfortable situation, I pretend to be someone else-- well, it is very fun too. When I was in Spain, I got there so late that my hostel was closed, and I met some guys in a park in the middle of the night and pretended to be: Den Wagner, from Athens Georgia (Dey-ann WAY-gi-ner, Fromme Aath-ins JO-jia) It worked, but they barely spoke english, hahah. I have a traditional French surname, and am from the upper-Midwest.

One thing that’s now accurate is the slow draw. We might talk really southern, but most of us (I’ve heard this from multiple people who are from non-southern states) talk to each other super fast rather than slow.

I was born and raised in northern Alabama but my parents are from the midwest and my town is pretty diverse, so the majority of people my age don't have strong southern accents. I thought I had successfully avoided picking up an accent and everyone I've met has agreed. But this year, after taking two italian classes, I realized that my vowels have a tendency to be long and bright and pronounced. When I was tired in class, my mouth was bad at keeping an italian-ish accent so my natural vowels would slip through and then I realized how southern they sounded haha

I must admit frankly it felt rather odd to be speakin to my screen while I was on my own, but really a fun experience. This comin from a non-native English speaker, the deep-south southern accent really makes English much easier. Edit: just writing this sentence after watchin this vid and it was absolutely brilliant
