Moved to southern Alabama 5 months ago, I was pleasantly pleased to find some of the move kind and accepting people I have ever met. I moved from Texas, clearly the most racists states I have ever lived in. As a country we still have a long way to go as far as racism goes. Experience the great state of Alabama for yourself. The stereotype of people from Alabama is extremely exaggerated. They are kind and respectful, as long as they are shown kindness and respect.

Born and raised in Alabama. Lived here my entire life(33), and I personally have NEVER encountered a racist person. Not saying that there aren't any racist here or that my experiences is everyone else's experiences, but I've never had a racist encounter. For the most part or atleast anyone I've ever encountered we all treat each other as human beings. My husband is from up north, and before moving here he like many others thought that the south was just horrible. He was amazed at how kind, friendly and helpful everyone here is. Even our polices are genuinely friendly and kind. Some of our closest friends are white people. They would give us the shirts off their backs,, and vice versa without a second thought. Hell my mother just married a white man lol. Now, there are still a few small hick towns that are known for racism, but all us Normal folks black and white simply stay away🤣. My husband recently had a flat on side the highway, and a white man who lived closed, came and helped him pushed his truck into his yard. They drank beer for hours, as if they'd known each other their entire lives. When I came to pick my husband up finally, the white man said that the few hours he spent talking and drinking with my husband was the best time he'd had in a long time. And that he was now considered a brother to him... I love it here.

I've lived here 20 years. In terms of racism, sure there are some everywhere. But one of the things that i've thought a lot about is that I've heard less racial slurs being used here than when I lived in NYC. There it was a daily basis, here it's very seldom. Also, I was a foster parent for several years. we had children of various races, clearly not biological. No one had an issue with it, in fact most people would say encouraging comments. Alabama is a great place to live.

I just visited north Alabama and I think they are some of the sweetest and nicest people I’ve ever encountered. Extremely welcoming and friendly. Didn’t get a feel of racism or anything like that. I was in a pretty rural area, very country, and loved the whole experience.

The “thick accent” thing also depends on what part of Bama you’re from. I felt out of place when I moved from middle ish part of AL to Mobile AL because there were NO thick accents. I had to move back. Most of these questions can be answered by “it depends on what part of AL you’re in”. Where I’m from EVERYONE owns and carries. And as far as the “marrying cousins” stereotype.. I'm from Alabama. Unfortunately racism does still exist here, but it's not nearly as bad or as common as people in the media make it out to be. Racism in some form exists everywhere though, not just in the Southern USA. The vast majority of us are good folks who get along well with everyone and try our best to treat everyone with respect and kindness. My wife is from California, so she can attest that we do in fact have country accents. Mine is particularly strong, according to her. lol Neat video, thanks for sharing!

I'm from alabama, and I know nobody who's racist here, we only have dead ass turtles on boat ramps, hiking trails, poison ivy (EMAIL ME IF YOU WANT SOME WE NEED TO GET RID OF IT PLEASE HELP OH GOD), kudzu, either bulky SUVs, dodge trucks, small sedans, or 89 corvettes. Basically, we don't say HOWDY YALL every five seconds. Instead, we argue about the ice caps and taxes.

As one of those people from the north; when the accent question was asked and everyone with a thick southern said “I don’t have a thick accent” they said that I my tea got sweater!

On accents, everyone has an accent. I used to think I had no or very little of an accent, but I have become a lot more aware of my accent, and it is Southern! Maybe my Southern accent has become more pronounced over time, or maybe I've become more aware of it. My accent does seem to change in intensity depending on who I'm talking to or what I'm talking about. Anyway, it depends on where in Alabama you live and how old you are. The younger Alabamians might have less prominant or different accents, but that really depends as I know Gen. Zers with noticable Southern accents. I have family with strong country accents that I have not seen ever replicated on tv and I have seen some Southern accents that might sound similar to those on Kendrick Brothers movies, but not so much in the movies with people using fake Southern accents. Those accents are usually from other parts of the South or from generations long passed that have either died out or only have a few representatives (like Kay Ivey for example).

On what qualifies for sweater weather, it depends on the person. A thicker person or a menopausal woman might be fine with weather as low as 40-something degrees. Men also seem to be able to tolerate cooler temperatures more than women in many cases.

Lived in Alabama my whole life. I visit the New England area quite a bit though and have a lot of family in New York and Vermont. At times people will recognize I have a southern accent. At others they would ask why I don’t have an accent. Alabama racist? Yeah but is it more than other states? Not sure. I was convinced all that racism was in the past until I joined local Facebook groups. But again is it worse than up north? Not sure. I never go to Walmart. I know a lot of people who refuse to shop there. But we have plenty of alternatives. There’s a big “buy local” or “support mom and pops” around here. In small towns Walmart took over and people don’t have much choice. I know just as many anti-gun people as people who own guns. It doesn’t get cold to me until below 50 degrees. And then it’s just a nip. Hate to say I know a couple of people who married a daughter-in-law or step daughter. But heck, celebrities do that crap these days. Religion does have a much greater hold here. But still it’s higher in rural areas than urban. I live in a democratic county. So I see a big mix of political ideologies. College football is a menace to this state. People look at me weird when I tell them I don’t have a team. I could not care less. Yeah Alabama fans can be “the worst”. There is a difference in manners and hospitality here than in northern states. Jill needs to get some edumacation. 😂

On people going to Walmart, a lot of people go to Walmart, but there are also people who are dead set against Walmart for some reason or another, and it isn't usually political. Some don't go because they don't like businesses that seem to kill competition, but many of the same people like to go to Target like Target is somehow not guilty of the same stuff. Target is just basically the more expensive, more liberal Walmart (or Kmart; they look like a Kmart knockoff).

I was born and raised in AL. If you say you don’t have a thick accent, most often times it’s because you can’t hear it. I’ve lived in Atlanta for 20 years and I can still hear it. I was told by people when I went back home to LA (Lower Alabama) that I sounded “too northern” and needed to come back south. As for the state being racist, many people have grown out of the hatred but many have not. If you look at the system, I would say yes. You only have to take a ride into the Black Belt counties to see that’s true. The people there are descendants of hard working people who had to deal with tons of crap in the past, and sadly, today as well. I miss Alabama…the forests, rivers, lakes, and other natural things that make the state home.

I was born in Alabama but my father's family is from California and both of my maternal aunts live in Florida, And my mother is an English teacher. You wanna talk about a strange accent you should hear me I don't think most people can place me and I've lived in Alabama my whole life and as soon as I opened my mouth people ask me where I am from. I have to look at their stupified faces when I tell them" here" I've literally had people sit there and argue with me that I can't possibly be from Alabama. Also in school I was made fun of for talking funny. Fast forward to college I left the south and went out west, now I get 1/2 people asking if I'm local and the other half positively ID me as a southerner 😆 Life is strange, so is the English language.

I have lived in Wisconsin Colorado Ohio and Alabama. They all have good and bad people, Alabama as a whole the people are friendlier and more helpful.

The accent comes and goes for some reason. If I'm talking normally it's not there really, but if I stub my toe or get agitated, then the accent comes out. Like a Southern Incredible Hulk.

Forgive my little English...I'm Cuban...a muscular red bone afro Cuban and Spanish ancestors..I'm a driver I'm going true Thomasville Alabama..like 3am.....and a highway patrol stop me...after some questions and show my driver license ect ect the police ask me where I'm going i explain.and name.it delivery place ..after that he listen..from the GPS that I'm loosing the signal..The policeman say is very difficult to get there..follow me..I follow this ANGEL from GOD.for about 11 miles we go to the delivery place. I say THANK YOU he turn around and left.....all the time I go to Alabama I just encoenter..very good and polite people...I hope people understand my English thanks

And Yes lived in Northern Al abama, and presently in Southern Alabama and find it to be one of the nicest places I have lived. Easy to get along with just about everyone and there seems to be a Lot of Continuity throughout this State. Folks are very Genuine for the most part and have Good Values! I grew up in Texas but I have lived in Alabama for 7 years and I noticed a big change in racism. I do believe there are a ton of racists in Alabama compared to where I grew up on Texas.

It seems to always be implied that only one race can be racist. Anyone from any race can be racist. That being said, the nicest people from anywhere I've lived are in the South. As a whole, most people are very friendly.

I went to UA as an out of state student from 2009-13 . I noticed that among my fellow millennials, the accent was primarily found in rural areas. Most of the people who grew up in the larger metros such as Huntsville and Birmingham had little to no accent. Older folks generally had a heavier accent regardless of whether they were urban or rural.

Southerner here, living in the NE area for over a decade. I grew up in Texas and I've lived all over this beautiful country of ours. The only time I ever heard anyone have a racist attitude was in the NE. They thought that because I was from Texas, they could get away with their being ugly. It's not an unusual attitude in the North for New Englanders to think they can be openly racist with me. It's the main reason that I despise living up here. They virtue signal; but they're such disgusting hypocrites, that they are rotten to their cores. Not one of them ever made the mistake of doing that again around me. It's disgusting that teachers indoctrinate students into believing this utter garbage, that a whole people were and are racists. It was Democrats who held slaves. They, Democrats, were both blacks and whites-and, the owned both black and white slaves. It was the North who funded the slave trade in conjunction with Southerners. Africans rounded up other tribes and sold them.

I would like to make a statement about the cousin question just because it is like the most stereotypical thing and it's also very insulting. Historically there is a very real reason why that law is in place but the law is for like it's illegal to marry anyone closer to you than a 5th cousin, This law was put into place earlier in our state constitution that before the days were cars were really used for everyone pre great depression because when you live in a small town there were people who literally never left that smalltown their entire lives so eventually everybodys blood line just got mixed. In a modern day society though this question and this scenario Is pretty much unheard of.
