Great tutorial I have a question though what kind of container should I use for the ferric chloride when quenching it and for storing it after
@SMKWcom
@SMKWcom 10 ай бұрын
The Ferric Chloride comes in a plastic container but we use a glass jar like what we used in the video as an extra safety for the heat from the flames
@thundercell13
@thundercell13 2 ай бұрын
Lots of people use mason jars to store theirs in so just throw a lid on it and store it till use it again. (Obviously the lid is usually metal) but as long as you don’t go shaking around all the time should be fine

Great video, my only issues as someone who has been burnt pretty good / bad in the past. I wouldn't suggest wearing those gloves when using a torch. If you had an accident they'd melt right into your skin. Definitely not a pleasant feeling having a burn site scrubbed clean.

Not exactly. With steel it'll turn colors under heat but not as crazy. Also ferric chloride will etch up the finish so you wanna go straight to water once you see the color you want with the torch.

How does the "lightning" pattern come through? Is that just what happens when it's quenched in the -water- oil? Is there a way to control the "entropic-ness" of the pattern/finish?

This pattern is after quenching in Ferric Chloride Acid and the main control is the heat how dark you get it when torching really sets up the pattern... I did not heat mine evenly because I wanted the variation, but with a more even heat you get a more consistent pattern.

How hot did you get the scale before quenching in the water? I haven’t had much luck with heat anodizing. I think I always get the titanium too hot.
@SMKWcom
@SMKWcom Жыл бұрын
I don't go by specific temperature, I just heat them until they start to change color and then the key is quenching them in Ferric Chloride Acid... that is what I quench them in, afterward I rinse them in water.

I know you talked about safety in this video in regards to gloves and eye protection. You failed to mention thou that ferric fumes are highly carcinogenic to your lungs and can serious long lasting effects if it's not done in a well vented area, while also wearing a mask that is chem rated. I know the intent of this video was to show how easy it is to put a cool finish on some scales but not even mentioning that stuff seems like a big miss. Ferric is no joke and will mess you up.

Yeah so on my birthday I get the spyderco PM2 in fat carbon uncoated M4 and when I opened the pkg the spydie box had a rubber band around it, so I opened that to find somebody's greasy fingerprints all over the blade and their arm-hairs!!! Wowwww was I disappointed, if I wanted you to test out my knife for me I'd ask also I kind of prefer the patina to be my own DNA so don't sell a knife that you have "USED" to display or to make videos as a "NEW-NEVER USED" knife because you have certainly "USED" it have you not?!?!? There was also a big flat spot on thee edge apex where it must have been dropped, to a user im sure these things would not matter but I am a knife collector with intent of future resale but I certainly cannot sell this as an unused knife because that is not what it is at all and you should not have either!!!
