And here's how to knit double stockinette stitch: nimble-needles.com/stitches/h...
Chapters:
0:00 Double 101
2:40 The basic double knitting technique
6:13 Double knitting selvage
9:18 Changing colors in double knitting
12:30 Double knitting other knitting stitch patterns.
18:30 Double stockinette stitch (knit each row twice)
Double knitting is a simple colorwork technique that creates a reversible fabric in two colors suitable for beginners. You can also use it to knit two at a time or in the round but most people just use it for simple colorwork.
The basic double knitting repeat goes like this:
1. Bring both yarns to the back
2. knit one stitch using yarn A
3. bring both yarns to the front
4. purl one stitch using yarn B
Now, if you follow this repeat, you will create two pieces that are not connected at the sides. That white most people will want to employ a special double knitting selvage. So in every row
1. Knit the first stitch through back loop
2. Bring the yarns to the front and twist them
3. Purl the next stitch trapping the other color in between
4. When you reach the second to last stitch: Bring the yarns to the back and slip the stitch purlwise
5. Bring the yarns to the front, and slip the last stitch purlwise as well.
For changing colors in double knitting, you don't actually need a special technique. All you need to do is knitting a knit stitch for the front side in a different color. But when you do, make sure that you also purl the next stitch using a different (ie the other) color as well.

Norman, I have been watching your videos for some time now. As a crocheter for some 13 years, I finally figured out how to knit after watching your videos which taught me the continental method. This was probably around 10 months ago and since then I've returned to your channel, and your blog, again and again. I've gone from a hopeless feeling of 'I'll never be able to knit', to being able to work double knitting, backward knitting, intarsia in the round. Stuff I never thought possible and it's huuugely thanks to your videos and picture tutorils. I've been thinking about signing up for your patreon for a while now but I really don't think I have an excuse not to anymore. Thank you so much! Oh, you're also a pleasure to listen to. Such a beautiful person! You just explain things so wonderfully! They just click with me instantly.

I love the look of double knitting for color work on scarves and hats. I did it by knitting one colour at a time, and twisting the yarns at the end of each row. You need double pointed needles to do that, but the edge turned out nicely without slipping the stitches. However I think it would be easier to keep track of the colour changes with both yarns together. I also had no idea how ribbing would turn out. Great tutorial as always!

Your videos have helped me understand the logic behind knitting so much more than I ever have with books alone. Even just watching the first part, a different video you did helped me understand that it's called double knitting because the purl is the reverse of the knit stitch. I wouldn't have understood that just on my own. Thank you for your work!

Norman, first of all I would like to thank you for your videos and written instructions. I have been a crocheter for about 59 years and finally started learning how to knit, on my own. I could not have gotten this far without your help. Recently I saw something that was double knitted--amazing--I did not know that was a thing! So I have been learning from your video, and I would get a good sized swatch done find a small error, and rip it out and start over. I had quite a bit done yesterday...decided I wanted to start from scratch again and...I could not get it right, it kept coming out with just the repeating of the two colors without the 'magic' of separating the colors front and back. Ripped it out over and over, would have a stitch or two that just was not right. Then after starting over again, watching your video Again ( lost count of how many times) I realized it was as I suspected, a very simple error on my part. The memore trick that finally got this knitting style to sink in for me is simple...when doing the knit stitch that yarn color should be closest to the needle you are working off of and when then doing the purl stitch that color will be closest to that needle as well. As you said many times do not twist your yarns...but I had to do it, see it to get it thanks so much for all you do.

I started a double knit scarf off of a pattern when I was first learning to knit and the pattern just had you knit both colors together at the end. I was surprised there wasn’t a cleaner looking way to do it, but I made the scarf anyways. Running across your video and seeing how perfect your technique is has me so excited to remake the whole thing! Thank you very much.

Favourite tutor when I want to do a project I have never done before like double knitting. How to calculate raglan, etc. I always find my answers in your tutorials wich are clear to understand. Learned to knit and crochet when I was 6 in school and Afghan and tunesian crochet from an aunt of mine. Still i am learning due to you New techniques and materials like sorts of needles etc. Now busy with socks for a big size as my husband has big feet haha and wilde. I always want a good result. Already started back 5 times. Oh need a stitch that widens. Got it. A good exercise Pearl one Stitch one. Needle close zo ik goes faster. After the socks i will proceed double knitting. Base than a hat. I saw the hat you have knitted double. I also want to teach my daughter a lessen. She did not learn does want to but also has always critisism. Why don´t you buy in a store. Because self made is better and warmer. After she is always amazed. How do you do it. Makes me laugh. Realy. Look even men knit I say. Odd no at least they dare and you don´t I say to her. Hahaha Have a great Year 2023 ahead. My best wishes from Belgium.

I've been working on writing up a double-knitting pattern, and I was struggling to find a good tutorial to recommend. As you mentioned, the vast majority of tutorials out there say to bring both yarns to the back to knit and both to the front to purl, and this isn't always correct. Thank you for making this video, so I have something to share that won't lead people astray on my pattern. :)

I Love double knitting. I attend a knitting club where my friends are capable of creating wonderful sweaters, in fairisle, or mittens or socks. But, for them, I am the most skillful (!) simply because I "master" the double knitting technique. I think people is intimidated by all the purls and about being confused about where to knit or purl. My way: I knit with the yarn held in my left hand (continental style) and I purl with the yarn held in my right hand (english style). In this way, I can be fast and following a pattern is as easy as in fairly isle (which I instead do not enjoy due to tension problems). Double knitting to me is easier than fair isle :-)

I could watch your knitting videos all day long. In fact, I have done so today! I really appreciate that you explain the reasoning for the mechanics in the placement (front vs. back) of the unused yarn. I have not yet tackled double knitting, but after completing a cowl today (and feeling like I knitted two cowls in order to knit an inside lining to hide the color work in the front), I am ready to give double knitting a try. I realize that the labor is still the same; however, like doing socks two-at-a-time, I like to feel like when I come to the end of a pattern I am REALLY done. =) Thank you for taking the time to record these.
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 2 жыл бұрын
oh true enough! you can use double knitting for cowls. I mean..not sure if it is really faster than knitting a liner to hide the floats but it will give you a lot more choices in terms of the colorwork!

Because of your wonderful explanation I started to knit big blankes in double face and I really love it as well as your whole knitting chanel. My question: I also love to knit cables but I don't know how it should work with the extra needles in front and backside of the work when twisting is nessesary. Do you know how to knit cables in double face and if yes can you explain it in one of your next tutorials? That would be really great! Thanks a lot!
@NimbleNeedles

you cannot really knit cables. I mean, you can but that would require an awful amount of slipping stitches and for most people that just won't look good :(

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I really respect the way you anticipate and address potential questions and problems (e.g., ribbing, where the yarns are held on opposite sides). The one thing no one seems to have anticipated is how gauge is affected by double knitting when it's not from a pattern. I need to knit some 6" (15 cm) squares. Do I cast on enough stitches for 12" (determined by the yarn's label gauge, then going down a needle size as you advised), anticipating that half will be on each side, and they will naturally be 6" each? Thanks so much❤

Well, that's a good start but from there you will probably have to experiment around a bit. So, it's not gonna turn out the right size in 100% of all cases..maybe 20.

thank you for this video! i got it almost right away, your explanations are clear and easy to follow! i have a question, actually; is it possible to double knit herringbone stitch?
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles Жыл бұрын
I would say not really. I mean sure..somehow it is certainly doable with a cable needle and lots of fidgeting around...but no..decreases in double knitting are always a bit of a problem and herringbone is just decreases. I can't image it looking very pretty for all the effort it would mean.

Mr Norman, salut. 🙏🏻🙌🔥You’re always my go-to for comprehensive instruction and also rid me of some sloppy habits. Wish I could come visit awhile. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. 🌷 I do have dyslexia and even though I’m an English knitter, introduced by my German mother, I can usually understand these continental videos… My brain and it’s letter flipping craziness- this was too much for me to follow, although I grasped the concept. Maybe it’s time I find a knitting teacher? Anyone know of an English style dk knitting explanation to recommend?

Hi Norman! I always find your videos and explanations very easy to understand and helpful. Can this technique be used to make pockets in a sweater or vest above a ribbed hem? I can't picture how to pick up the stitches for the pocket.
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 2 жыл бұрын
hm...theoretically speaking you could probably double the stitches in a return row and start "intarsia" double knitting on the front for some rows and later bind half of the stitches off after separating them to two needles. But you'd have to toy around with the increases you pick etc. So overall, I would say picking up stitches will probably be much easier :)

Wow thank you! Your video is very helpful! I have one question. If I want to knit a cowl using this technique but I want to start and finish the cowl with ribbing using only one strand of yarn and knit a regular ribbing, is it possible to transit from simple knitting to double knitting? Or do you suggest to pick up stitches after I finish the main part of the cowl and knit the ribbing afterwards?
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 2 жыл бұрын
two things really: First of all, you can double-knit ribbings: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/htmGoaaazszOnY0.html And secondly, I would actually transition by doing a row of *k2tog, p2tog* if you don't want to dk your ribbings.

Question....I apparently love to be difficult. The very first thing that I ever knitted was a pair of socks. Now, you're amazing and you explain everything so flawlessly. I'm wondering about double knitting in the round and also adding a third color that would be on both sides opposite each other. Any tips or hints?

well, you can knit it in the round..it's the exact same process. As for 3rd color...yeah you could combine it with stranded knitting but I don't have a video for that (yet)
