A step-by-step tutorial on the German twisted cast on. Creates a super stretchy edge perfect for socks and hats

The German twisted cast on, also known as Old Norwegian Cast On, creates a super stretchy edge. It's a variation of the standard longtail cast-on and works in a similar way. But because you twist stitches as you cast them on, you get a stretchier edge. It's a bit more difficult to knit that's why I included a couple of slow-motion repeats of me doing the German twisted cast on.
But i will also show you a super easy alternative. You can also do a single cast on and knit across one row. It will create the exact same results as the German twisted cast on but might be a bit easier to knit - especially as you don't need a tail and can never run out of yarn.
I also included a way to do the German twisted can on purlwise in case you want to knit ribbing.

I remember Mutti doing this when she knitted all our socks. Unfortunately I was too busy with work that she said thought it better to concentrate on my work as I did not have enough time to learn knitting. Now that I started learning how to knit, I miss her support. I know that she would not hesitate to pass on her knowledge in knitting. Thanks Norman for being there to share your experiences. ❤️

This is so lovely and sad. My mum taught me how to knit, and she got it from her mother who passed away about 10 years ago. I only just realised that for some reason, we all knit the English way, which makes 0 sense because we're Dutch. I would love to ask my grandmother how this came to be. We all have a deep connection with Scotland especially but as far as I know this only started when my grandmother was in her 30s and my grandfather took a job there.

I just tried this. I like the fact that the bottom edge isn't curling at all. I think it's a little complex, but not difficult, for those familiar with the long-tail cast-on. After the first couple of stitches, I found my thumb in motion, untwisting its loop, as I was picking up the working yarn with the needle, and that wasn't even a conscious thought. I'm holding off on the purl-wise version for the moment, because I'm still on my first cup of coffee (I just woke up), and I want to get this right. Thanks for helping me increase my knowledge base!

I am mostly self-taught, and don't have a lot of experience. I have struggled with casting on ever since I first learned. A friend suggested I try the German twist, and I happened to stumble over this channel first. The method was so clearly explained and demonstrated that I understood it after watching it once. I had to watch several times to memorize the steps, of course, and it took some practice to get comfortable with it, but this was incredibly easy to learn and I like the method. It’s a real tribute to you as a teacher. Thank you!

That was over 20 years ago, and now there are so many great teachers online! But, my dear man, you are my absolute favorite. Thank you! I'm trying to start my first sock and this cast on was recommended (plus long tail cast on just wasn't being stretchy enough). The video that the pattern recommended didn't help me at all, but this worked. I think what helps me is the way you give a name to each step and clearly describe what you're doing. Somebody who shows you but just says generic things like "put it under" "pull it through" really wasn't helping my brain to connect.

The pattern I am starting, asks for the German twisted cast on, but I have partially torn my radial collateral ligament in my left thumb, making it painful to bend my thumb and release the yarn at the end. I can still manage the backwards loop cast on by turning my wrist a bit, so I’m set! I’m only doing a few lines a day since my injury, but even that little is a comfort. I learned this with the needle reversing through the twist on your thumb. It serves the same purpose but is easier for those of us with stiff joints.

Yeah, that's why I showed the super easy alternative at the end 🙏

Another great tutorial. I learned the German twisted cast on fro Very Pink knits here on you tube. But I have never seen the purl cast on, which looks great by the way. I have used this cast on for hats and it is brilliant. One thing is tutorials always say you can start with a slip knot or not but they always use a slip knot. I like to start without a slip knot when I work in the round but honestly I think I am never very sure about it and I think it looks different every time I did try to use this for my beginner socks but as I'm knitting them on 2mm needles it was very fiddly so I gave up and used your 2 needle method which worked much better than I expected. Thank you again. Always something new to learn from you 😊

At the end of the video I show a simpler alternative, so you can always use that instead. And in the round i would definitely start without a slipknot. you just start with a simple backward loop.

Thank you so much! My daughter had brain surgery and while waiting for her hair to grow back, she has requested a slouchy hat that suggests the German Twisted cast on, I watched a ton of videos, and I couldn't get it.. then I came across your tutorial and now I can do it! Thank you a million times over!

Hi Norman. Wonderful tutorial! Your instruction is stellar! Everything is so clear, concise and easy to understand. You truly have an amazing gift! I was amazed to learn that the backwards loop or single Cast On comes out the exact same way as the German Twisted Cast On once you i it the first row as you demonstrated! Fascinating information! That was the first Cast On I ever learned as a little girl many moons ago, lol. Thank you for another great tutorial! Happy Sunday and have a wonderful week! I agree with everyone here that watching your videos on Sunday is a real treat!🤗🤗

I’m excited to use this for my next hat! I don’t like tight hats so I wanted a very stretchy cast on
