Dry up? I'm not sure what you mean. Are you able to make the throat clear noise?

@@alexandermeade5847 It's hard to say without hearing you, my guess is you're not actually engaging the false chord, and you're making a sound with your peripheral tissue, which will make your throat upset, scratchy, and your eyes water until you cough for real.
