Nice video. I'll make a little addition here. One thing that I have found important (and also my sensei says so), is that when you cut down, you should make sure that ukes hand is higher than their elbow, and their elbow is higher than their shoulder. That way you have better control over them. I saw you actually did it that way in the video, but because you didn't say anything about it (or at least I didn't notice), I thought I' mention it.

Thanks for commenting and sharing. I did my best to share what I remembered at the moment, but it's true that there is so much out there. I feel your addition can be meaningful though and could be a valuable tip for some people. Good luck in your training :) Let me know if you'll see something else

Good video on how to perform the basics of ikkyo - this can provide the foundations to learn the principles of Aikido. I write "can" very specifically because ikkyo in of itself is not a principle, it's a technique. The beginning of training in the principles of O'Sensei's Aikido are taught through learning kihon waza or techniques. Unfortunately, most dojos never go beyond that, and are consequently stuck at that level. This is not meant as a criticism of you or your video. Rather, I post this because what attracted me to Aikido was the effortless magic of O'Sensei's art, carried on by some of his most gifted students like Tohei Sensei, Saetome Sensei, Yamaguchi Sensei, Shioda Sensei, Kono Sensei and American Sensei's like Ledyard Sensei, Gleason Sensei and Muryasz Sensei. All of their arts and waza reflect O'Sensei's art. Rather than get into a deep discussion of those principles, kizushi, flow, mushin, futotai and fudoshin, I would like to relate the following story by Saetome sensei.... "One day O'Sensei was demonstrating Ikkyo for his students to practice. After the demonstration one of his students asked 'Sensei, which one was Ikkyo? - they had indeed seen O'Sensei demonstrate many techniques... O'Sensei laughed and said they were all Ikkyo." The point of the story Saetome Sensei related is that techniques unto themselves, ikkyo, nikko, sankyo etc. are not the principles of O'Sensei's art - O'Sensei's Aikido. They are just techniques to get you on the path to what Ledyard Sensei so aptly describes as "the good stuff", in my humble opinion, the great stuff! It's when you get to the point (and it's a long journey to get there - and then you discover the true size of the mountain!) where you are relaxed, undisturbed, unattached and moving appropriately without ANY thought of technique, that true technique or more aptly described, true principles manifest themselves. You don't think about how to ride a bicycle, you just ride. This is the point where, in Miyamoto Musashi's words "you throw away the techniques" and you start to truly practice O'Sensei's art. That's when the magic happens. Again, I don't post this as criticism, quite the contrary I believe nothing is wasted and therefore videos like this are useful. However given the state of Aikido being taught at many Dojo's, I can't help but post some of these thoughts. I hope it is taken in the spirit it is given - I never stop learning, even after almost 24 years and my art in the last three years has never been more enjoyable!

Chris Ward - well said Chris!!! Criticism should be taken in the spirit in which it is given. You've rightly pointed out that its a very detailed explanation by Rokas sensei. And also right that most dojos start out with the basic 5 techniques meant to be a learning tool, but unfortunately get stuck at that point and don't move on to more dynamic and practical forms. This is what gives the popular perception that aikido is useless. - khader

It is amazing to see how you changed your attitude toward a style in 5 years. I believe every style has its value. It is up to the practitioner to make it work. Forms are just forms. But most good martial arts have a good reason for each form under each circumstance. I can see that this form at 2:15 will not work. Your arm position does not allow you to push your opponent to the other side. Try to look at the structure of the joints of your arm careful to see what I mean. Also, your opponent will not stick his arm out like that, especially if he is a boxer. On the other hand, if you can improve your footwork and be able to move to the blind side of your opponent just a little bit, you will be able to do that. So, it is all about some EXPLOSIVE footwork.

That's a freaking good explanation on "how to make something that looks useless actually useful". I think Aïkido just like any other martial arts have its defects and values that you can apply into a real fight. But as you've mentioned, if everything is codified with a form that does not represent what a human would do (or at least in more than 50% of the case), you need to change something. I'm a beginner in Aïkido but I've done a lot of boxing / Muay Thaï etc... the footwork you're talking about is the most important thing for such techniques to be applied !

The way that the wrist is being manipulated reminds me of Aikido's Nikyo principle. I did Aikido for a time back in highschool and yeah. It can hurt. ALOT. It's very difficult to pull off when things are going fast and since there's TWO cops doing it to each wrist, ain't no way the protesters even bothered to put up a fight. They let this happen to themselves by being stubborn, so they have to face the pain of the consequence. You can try the technique on yourself. Just put your hand on top of your other hand, and slowly fold the hand below it inwards towards the forearm it's attached to. It hurts like hell the stronger you attempt to fold it.

The technique must be working in base without any conditions. Only one condition is the kind of attack. There is not this variant. You musn't walk around him, because he have a lot of time to change point to strike. Uke must move around the Tori, not vice versa. Home position is as you shown. Then try to enter not from the line you stay to a blue tatami, but from green part of tatmi to blue not to him , but pass him. Ukes arm is half-extended. Enter(first touch) to elbow not push , but up just a little. Try and you will see that tori begines to walk around you without any idea about new strike.

I always find a very hard time with ikkyo. I mean, I've practiced aikido for a year more or less. I think i manage to kind of pull it off when the person is holding me in the shirt, but without resistance. I never manage to make it when the person resists the move.

Like most people, when resistance is applied, Aïkido tends to lose its ground since it is *most of the time* done without any resistance

If your aggressor is bigger than you and you mount their back, couldn’t they just stand up and slam you? I know slams aren’t allowed in ibjjf rules so i could see where you’re coming from

@@Taekwon-Brando They could, but chances are they won't. Especially if the choke is on. Also, if they try to transfer to standing, you transfer to Oshiro-Sankaku, a rear triangle hold with an arm bar.

This ikkyo will never functional, because a true uke or a real attack will move when you pull it when you grab his arm, or when you exist to the line attack. Uke and tori cross arm to defend himself, when you exit the line attack, uke dont need to cross with you and could use is hand to hit you. And if uke are mobile, he can move in front of you and maintin the cross arms. This forme is possible only if uke are not mobile. Thats why this form of ikkyo cant work when uke/oppenent are good.

japanese jiu jitsu is called simply jiu jitsu. that's precisely why the other is called bjj, BRAZILIAN jiu jitsu. drop the gracie arrogance mate, admitting to your mistakes is a part of improving. that being said, aikido is very weak in its application for defence. you need to be facing a complete novice at fighting in order to do anything meaningful.
