How to do Ippon Seoi Otoshi - In this tutorial I am showing how to do How to do Ippon Seoi Otoshi. The throw is almost identical to Ippon Seoi Nage, however the difference comes when you extend your leg backwards, trapping the shin and creating How to do Ippon Seoi Otoshi.

Excellent video on how to execute the throw, but this is just a variation of ippon-seoi-nage :)

Hi Andreas, thanks for your comment, I'm glad you liked the video! You could call it a variation of the Ippon Seoi Nage, however when you extend your leg backwards the name of the throw actually changes into Ippon Seoi Otoshi in order to distinguish between the two.

Professor, I hope this video is not too old to get a reply. If, given the throw was the same orientation pictured. Would it be incorrect for the right knee to touch the ground.
@SampsonJudo
@SampsonJudo 3 жыл бұрын
It would not be incorrect, no. It would still be Ippon Seoi Otoshi

@@SampsonJudo Thank you for your reply. I do brazilian jiu jitsu and looking for a good turn throw to use. I am a short guy and was thinking this or tai otoshi.
@SampsonJudo
@SampsonJudo 3 жыл бұрын
Yes this is a very powerful throw if done correctly. However with BJJ be careful of giving your back up so personally I would do this without dropping your knee on the floor as it’ll give less chance fir someone to take your back (as you’ll naturally be higher if your leg is up). With BJJ guys, I find Ashi waza (foot sweeps) are very effective and a good, safe bet.

@nonyabizness2550 3 жыл бұрын
@@SampsonJudo I usually go with ashi waza. But I had my first competition this week. My opponent was much taller and hinged at the waist so his legs were far. I thought maybe he was vulnerable to a forward throw in retrospect.

@@SampsonJudo Professor, in tai otoshi should the kuzushi be straight forward or kind of circular to the front corner?

Hello! Thanks for the video. Great technique. But after investigating for my own club, I am pretty confident this technique is not Ippon Seoi Otoshi, but rather Ippon Seoi Nage. The old Kodokan video explains the difference pretty clearly (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLqAq9yZyd-Yoac.html). The leg doesn't determine whether it is otoshi or nage. The question is, if you lift the opponent in any way or just drag him straight down. In this case the opponent is lifted - so it is Ippon Seoi Nage... at least imho.
@SampsonJudo

This argument you raise is one that has gone round many times. The Kodokan do officially name Seoi Otoshi as you describe, and even name a drop Seoi Nage on two knees Seoi Otoshi (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNthh7CHs9TVY2g.html). Some believe it is due to the IJF/Kodokan trying to give a name to what was previously known as Drop Seoi Nage (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNZxobKpycrZf40.html). Myself and many other argue that this is an incorrect classification. I believe that it is better to differentiate the two based on how the leg is positioned. This is also how I was originally taught; and how many others have been taught. If you google Ippon Seoi Otoshi, the majority of references will look similar to how I have demonstrated it.

If you check out the book “Kodokan Throwing Techniques” by Toshiro Daigo, who was Chief Instructor at the Kodokan, the section on Seoi Otoshi shows the technique in three ways. 1) One knee down, on the inside 2) One knee down, on the outside (how I have shown it) 3) Two knees down Hope this helps!

@@SampsonJudo Dear Sampson, thank you very much for your detailed feedback. As a matter of fact, my understanding was exactly like yours and I still think this differentiation is more intuitive than the one by Kodokan. Perhaps it would have been worth mentioning this ongoing dispute in one sentence in your video. But I - and my pupils for certain - will be fine with a certain degree of fuzziness regarding these two perspectives. Again, thanks for your time! Christian

The differece between seoi nage and seoi otoshi is how uke moves during the throw. In Seoi otoshi uke fall downwards. In seoi nage goes up over the back of tori then down. As performed its a seoi nage with legs wide apart. Kodokan also point out that at least one leg/knee has to be in kontact with the mat to be a seoi otoshi. Standing with the lgs wide apart dosnt make it seoi otoshi by it self.its still a seoi nagen, in the version a ippon seoi nage
