Excellent material for teachers and those who work with children. These principles will definitely work in counseling children of alcoholics.

I am a mom, and I learned this from elementary school. I am having a difficult time engaging on activities with my child, from some very intense trauma I've gone thru, I think all of this has helped me stay aware that I can heal. But I want to calm my nervous system first, more like Re learn all of this and be more stable and teach her all these great things for her well being.

This is really helpful to me thanks so much. My therapist told me we might try play therapy and i think it's a bit odd that she would try this method with me because I'm 14.. But idk

This is a phenomenal & thorough video. I'm studying psych & planning on being RPT LPC. Just wondering, in the case of a child who might say things to show they don't feel loved by their mother, yet that same mother is working her butt off, in part to pay for the therapy in which the child ends up needing, bc the mother works so much. In the case of a cycle like this, what could a therapist truly do to intervene & make the very obvious problem go away? Are councelors expected to just have to do damage control perpetually, while the parents fail to do their part?

We could have a long conversation about this topic. Frankly, unless it's egregious neglect or abuse, which we would report to DSS, I'm not quick to judge parents but will do everything I can to support both parents and child.

Do you allow clients to remove items from your portable playtherapy bag? Any tips for dealing with clients who at times refuse to assist with cleanup?

Response from Dr. Thompson-Rainey: For several reason, I do not allow clients to take toys. Toys can be expensive to replace. Toys also have significance to other child clients and they need consistency in the their play materials. Also, the taking of toys provides a rich opportunity for learning self-control and making good choices. If a child attempts to take a toy, I say "Toys are for staying in the playroom. You can chose to put the toy over there or you can chose to give the toy to me." I repeat the limit as many times as necessary until the child ultimately relinquishes the toy. Then I respond "I see that you have decided to put the toy over there." The emphasis of this intervention is on self-control and the ability to make choices. We empower children to be in control of their behavior and have a sense of personal agency. I do not ask children to clean up the toys. The toys are for their expression and they should be free to express themselves as they need to for growth and integration. If a child thinks they are responsible for cleaning up toys, they may limit their play out of fear that it will be too hard for them to clean everything up in time. For example, a child may feel the need to make a mess as an expression of their life, but limit themselves because they don't want to have to clean it up. I don't ask adults to wipe up their tears, or clear the office of their traumatic energy, or to make sure all of their tissues are in the waste basket, and for the same reasons, I don't ask children to clean up their therapeutic experience (meaning toys)! Cleaning up the toys is one of the less glamorous parts of being a children's therapist who using play therapy interventions! Thanks for the questions! Good luck to you and the child-clients you serve!
