Hi, my name is Robert Royston. I'm a five time world champion of country dance working with artists like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley. I really hope that you'd learn how to line dance and experience what it's like to move to America's music, and that's country music. As part of our country line dance series, we wanted to arm you with a little knowledge of country couples dancing. Chances are, you are going to go to your country bar, you going to go to your country line dance club and in between line dances, there're gonna have some couple dancing and the most popular couple dance done in United State is of course the two step. So we would like to show you a good basic version of the two step, there's a lot of regional variations but just a good basic version of country two step. We're going to start off first with the close position hold. My right hand is going to go under Nicola's left arm, so I'm going to be kind of cutting the upper part of her shoulder blade, not down here, upper part of the shoulder blade. Nicola is going to take her left arm and put it on top of my right, that's gonna kind of be just below the shoulder and just above the bicep ladies. So below the shoulder above the bicep. Then my left hand is gonna hold her right hand just very comfortable at about shoulder level, nothing too overly done or pronounced yeah. Once again, there are variations to this that you will see, this is just a good basic couple dance hold. Now I'm going to start with my left, she's going to start with her right. Two steps is made up of a series of quicks and slows, a quick is one step for one beat, a slow is one step for two beats. So if you were to do quicks, it would be quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick. If you were to do slows, it would be slow slow slow slow right. By count of that, quicks would be 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, slows would be 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, so it's one step for two beats. The timing for two step is quick quick slow slow, 2 quicks 2 slows and a walking pattern. I start left she starts right, she goes back I go forward and we go quick quick slow slow, right, 2 fast 2 slow steps. We'll do that again. We're going to go quick quick slow slow and you'll just continue that pattern, quick quick slow slow, quick quick just like you're walking, quick quick slow slow, quick quick slow slow and quick quick slow slow. The thing about two step you should also know is the trivial line of dance. Line of dance kind of in every bar you will ever go into or even ballroom dancing, line of dance is counterclockwise, so you're always gonna move counterclockwise. And some floor etiquette, if there's a two step that's playing and some people are line dancing to it, you can two step around the outside. Think of it like a race track, the faster you go, the more of the outside of the floor you are. The slower you're going, the more to the inside of the floor until you get to the middle which is for line dancing. So we're going to do a little two step music for you and you can follow along at home. 5 6 7 go, quick quick slow slow, quick quick slow slow, quick quick slow slow, quick quick slow slow, quick quick slow slow. So grab your favorite lady, get off the bars cause this is two step.

This is the best-produced dance instruction video I have ever seen. (I've not seen super many of them, and those others have all been amateurist.) Ultra-basic dance concept here, but really well presented. Bravo! From my perspective as a long-time social dance instructor, this video should have been titled either "Texas Two-Step", or "Country-Western Two-Step". The "classic" two-step uses a different footwork rhythm, but "two-step" in the U.S. in my understanding does now refer to this three-count, four-step basic pattern. If you really want to learn how to dance, go out dancing at good halls with good music! There are a lot of great social partner dances out there! The two-step, of whatever style, is a great social dance!!! Thank you for this really fine video!

what has always frustrated me with this dance is how the main step seems to repeat itself after 3 beats (2 eighth notes, followed by two quarters) while almost every mainstream country song is in 4/4.
@imatifoso2782
@imatifoso2782 10 жыл бұрын
You are correct that the music is in 4/4. The means there are 4 quarter notes or beats per measure. But the dance measure is 6/4, that is, 6 quarter notes or beats per phrase (my term to help you understand). Put another way, each phrase is 1 1/2 measures. You repeat the phrase so you take 3 measures to get back to where you started. Total 12 beats. If you learn fox trot, swing, polka, or other 4/4 dance, it is the same. Even triple time swing is based on 4/4 even though the beat is more complex. The phrases do not match the measures. You dance to the beats, not the measures. Hope this helps.

If it's six count it makes more sense to say it 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold, that makes easy sense to the brain and to the feet. Lot's of people have difficulty applying the concept of quick quick slow slow,... since aren't the first three steps at the same time in between?: 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold, 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold. Doing 1,2,3,hold,5,hold, you're directly counting each beat with no vacant pause,... 'hold' takes the vacant spot in quick, quick, slow, slow,... after the two slows of course

This is the Two-Step done in the UCWDC...which is basically made up of 100 different weekend-long events around the world (most done in the USA). Each event is a weekend that is filled with Country Dance Competitions and Contests. They compete in 8 different partner dances...and yes, Two-step is the most popular by far. That said, what he showed is the basic movement. If you ever actually watched them dance...it doesn't look like this...becuase they are not basic dancers.

The easy straightforward understanding of 2-step is 1, 2, 3, hold, 5, hold, not quick quick slow slow, that's more confusing, since it's a six count, not a four count, in sync with the music beat. Be simple. one two three hold five hold, it's all there. quick quick slow slow aint all there
@clarisawheeler
@clarisawheeler 6 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I can hear the beat. I can't count and think about my feet. I can think about my feet and tell them quick and slow and stay with the beat. I count when I'm doing zumba or a class of some sort, but I don't want to think that much when I'm dancing.

@eponymousIme
@eponymousIme 5 жыл бұрын
That comes with experience. After a while the rhythm pops out at you (waltz, polka, foxtrot, Night Club Two-Step, fast swing, etc.) Also, if a DJ doesn't announce the type of dance/song coming up, a helpful partner asking you do dance will extend a hand and expectantly say something like "Waltz?" or "Night Club?" as an indication of the type of dance you're being invited to join in.

It's important to point out in each & every video that there are ONLY two (2) dance styles done on ANY social Dance Club/Lounge anywhere in the World. Spot/Rhythm & Progressive/Traveling. The congestion Problem (s) we all run into these days is that Dance Instructors do not continually reinforce (Over & Over/ Ad Nauseum ),...... All Spot/Rhythm Dance Styles should be done in the CENTER of the Dance Floor,......Progressive/Traveling Dance Styles are done in the two (2) outside lanes of the Dance Floor. Slower Progressive/Traveling Dancers on the inside Lane & the faster moving dances in the Outside FAST Lane. This way, we can ALL perform our dance of choice at the very same time to each particular Music Selection. Thank You!

This is not a traditional two step, this is a modernized dance class two step. The two step is traditionally a diagonal /side to side step. Fast. Fast, slow. I don't know how you would dance the way they teach in this video because two stepping music is three beats. One, two, and three-ee. Add one more fast step to the dance in this video and you've got a west coast swing. Fast fast fast slow slow. This is what I have learned dancing in two stepping bars. Just sayin'.
@DanceRuidoso
@DanceRuidoso 10 жыл бұрын
To be honest the bar dancing is the problem. Many people side step, very few understand line of dance, and even fewer understand a 4/4 count. This is a traditional two step in its most basic and best form. As he said there are regional variations and of course they all think they know "the right way to do it". But if there is any "right way" this is exactly it. Stepping to the side is basically drunk cowboy dancing, dancing backwards and bumping into everyone to impress your gurl is drunk cowboy dancing, pumping your arm up and down to the beat of the music is too, not caring about line of dance is drunk cowboy dancing. There are a hundred ways of doing it wrong and a few to do it right but this video is a failsafe way to do it right.

Robert Kelly Both are correct. There is Two Step (QQS) and there is Country or Texas Two Step (QQSS). You will also find regional variants. Anyone who tells you that such and such a version is "wrong" or "not traditional" has seen only a few forms. None of them is "wrong". They are just different. As you progress as a dancer, you learn other variants and, often, take steps from one to include in another. The Michael Thomas web site teaches a variant different from that taught by Brett Long, for example. In the old videos with Valerie Moss, she is doing a basic step more like polka basic. The Joe Baker video is QQSS and includes nearly 40 steps.

It's really sad when you have to teach someone two steps to the right and one step to the left

This is certainly not how we do it back in my part of Texas. I'm trying to teach my girlfriend how to do it and this is some northern stuff.

When you do to stop that's not the way you do it you go 1/2 to the right or anywhere you want then you go back which every where you are going then you start all over again and keep on going you can go anyway you want so you need some practice with me come over come over to my house

The first music of America was Native American music, followed by religious music made popular by the slaves singing of hymns. The roots of county music lies in Appalachian folk music which is a combination of many influences included African and European (Irish etc). It also borrowed heavily from blues. So, yes, perhaps it is an amalgamation of the diverse music backgrounds of America, but not America’s music. Nice tutorial though.
