The advice to not pull tight until you have done about an inch was SO helpful for seeing what I was doing and for controlling the neatness when tightening up. Thank you Norman.

Norman, you are the best! I have avoided mattress stitch because I did not want to deal with seaming. When knitting in the round in stockinette, I create a faux seam by purling 1 stitch at each side to give the appearance of a seam. You have made this look so easy and I will try this soon. Good tip to block before seaming. I tend to be a bit OCD about numbers so when knitting the garment, I will place stitch markers at the end of every 25 or so rows to make it easier to confirm the expected number of stitches have been seamed. Thanks so much!

Oh dear. I have always stuck to knitting throws and such like that do not need sewing which is my pet hate… this year the focus is on knitting sleeveless tabards and pullovers to wear with hunted down preloved shirts in all colours and pattern, so I need to get my act together with the sewing side of things. Thanks Norman for the unfussy gentle approach to get started with 🙏

I have a question, when knitting something like a sweater (where you will eventually be sewing pieces together like this), would you recommend *not* slipping the first stitch of every row while you are knitting the piece? I've always slipped the first stitch of my rows because the edge looks so nice and neat, but have struggled immensely with the mattress stitch/finishing when the time comes to sew all the pieces together. Even moving in a stitch or so is difficult for me; especially when sewing things like sleeves, which have all those increases near the edge. Thank you! Your videos are amazing and I have learned so much from you 🧶💜

No, I wouldn't slip stitches if I need to sew something. Creates unstable edges in my opinion

I am guessing when you have increases of stiches regularly, like in sleeves, you need to do 1 loop at a time also. This is the worst part of knitting for me. Even though I have been working on doing seems better.😊

Norman, I need help! I’ve looked through most of your videos as well as researched this online, and I cannot figure it out. I’m hoping you have time to show us as I can’t believe I am the only one out there who doesn’t know how to do this particular thing! I am an “advanced beginner” knitting a scarf that has four strips of 20 stitches each. I knitted the first strip, and now I have begun the second. The pattern says I’m supposed to “knit the last stitch together with the selvage loop of strip 1”. Problem #1: My last stitch of every row before I turn is always loose and so my selvage edge is looser than my knitting. After having searched and failed miserably, I used your links on your “10 best knitting books” and bought three of them, hoping that they will cover how to join live stitches (for lack of a better term) to a strip that has already been knitted. (Problem #2) Do you have a tutorial for this? There are lots of tutorials, where they joined strips with a tapestry needle, but I’m supposed to knit it in to the previous strip. Can you point me in the right direction or would you be willing to do a tutorial for those of us who don’t know how to do this? I would be forever grateful! Cindy

i have a tutorial on knitting neater edges, yes. But hey, why not contact the designer of that scarf?
@letstrainyourdog2017
@letstrainyourdog2017 Жыл бұрын
@@NimbleNeedles I tried that first but unfortunately she has no way to contact her. You can only find her on Ravelry (Prosser). I know how to join two pieces together with a tapestry needle but I need to attach the last stitch on the needle to the strip I've already done. I now understand you can't help with someone else's pattern. I've ordered the big 700 page knitting book as well as the Vogue one from your link on the video that shows lots of combinations so hopefully it will be addressed. I've been stuck but it comes today so yay!! I researched lots and lots of KZfaq channels but your two are by far the best. I've learned so much!! Thanks for all you do, Norman! Cindy

you did not show how to set up the needle for beginners. should I tie the yarn in my needle or tie it after I sew both ends?
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 4 ай бұрын
well, knots should be prevented in knitting. they unravel easily, that's why you won't see me tieing any in this video (or any other video). So yes, you need to weave in the tails later on. you can, however, use a cast-on/bind-off tail if it's in the right position.
@windyrainStorm

@@NimbleNeedles OK thank you, I just don't know what to do when you are goin to seam both ends. I'm just binge watching your videos to get an idea. When you seam both ends does it need to end to a specific knit pattern like regular knit or a purl?

Well, you have to weave in the tails as normal on the backside (or through the ridge you created in the middle). Here's a video that shows you how I weave in ends: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8dlbNB-183Rc4U.html
