Diana Sullivan teaches a quick and easy, good-looking seam for sewing
up your knits! It's only a half-stitch from the edge of the knitting,
and lies flatter than a regular mattress stitch. Want to learn more about beautiful finishing? Visit www.dianaknits.com and get Diana's new video course, "Knitter's Finishing School."

Marvelous approach -- with one MAJOR CAUTION! As promised, this results in faster and flatter mattress stitch seams. I've been using this on my Aran knit sweater projects for several years now with great success and I love it. The MAJOR CAUTION is that if, for any reason, you need to take out this seam then it cannot be repeated, because of the way it changes the participating stitches. I discovered this on a project where I had to shorten the sleeves of a finished pullover Aran knit sweater. I had to disassemble the sweater in order to pull out the raglan shaping and top inch of each sleeve (I had to first pull out the knit collar of the sweater). When I started to reassemble the sweater, I found that one leg of each selvedge stitch on the side and sleeve seams where I had done this "faster flatter" mattress stitch were stretched enough that I had big holes when I attempted to repeat the faster-flatter approach. All was fine after I reverted to a regular mattress stitch for these, but of course that was slower and bulkier. This approach truly IS faster and flatter so long as you don't have to take out the seam. The classic mattress stitch, at least the way I do it, does not distort the participating stitches as much as this approach. It is therefore easier to remove and redo the classic mattress stitch then this faster and flatter alternative.

Good point. Still, I love this stitch - the advantages outweight any problem from having to dissassemble a sweater., since that doesn't happen often, and as you said, you can resew in regular mattress.

Finishing is often the single biggest differentiator of the appearance of knits. You CAN learn regular mattress stitch - once the lightbulb goes off, you'll be glad you did! Suddenly, it gets easy - honest. I have a video on that. You can also learn to graft off waste yarn. Just these three seams, and almost everything you knit will look better! Make a few swatches and practice.

A few years back I had made a huge knitted blanket consisting of dozens of knitted pieces that I needed to sew together. Just these past few weeks, I was knitting another blanket and needed to sew some pieces together and I couldn't remember how I did it before. I was searching for hours trying to find the method I remembered, bc everything I was getting didn't feel familiar to me and I didn't like them. This was the method I remember using.
