In this video top coach Craig Bryant demonstrates how to do the "wiggly" shot.
This is where you spin the ball under the table with lots of sidespin to confuse your opponent.
It's a really fun shot to play and can help you win a cheap point and make your opponent look a bit silly.
In the video Craig demonstrates how to do the wiggly shot, explains when you should do the shot and how you can practice it. I also take on Craig in a few points. Can I return Craig's wiggly? Watch to find out...

Return of this shot: Don’t you think it is more accurate to hit the ball just after it bounces with a very shot spin/drive!? The ball does not come with a big speed, so it is easy to anticipate where it touches the table. As to the shot itself…Quite often the balls drops before my nose, when I am one meter from the table. The shot is worth to learn. And it would really exasperate the opponent!
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would definitely be an option. Take the ball off the bounce. Normally when the ball is high I like to let it bounce up and drop to shoulder height and then smash. But that didn't work with the wiggly, because I always seem to be off balance and in the wrong position (because of the disguised sidespin), so couldn't get a good smash on the table.

Very good explanation. I am not a very good player since I couldn't find places to play ping pong more often but I did developed that particular move myself. The aspect of ping pong which I was not familiar with and it is clear now, it is that you have to make decieving moves part of your game. This explanation and other serving techniques explanation indicate that this is true. Thank for the video.

Adding deception can be hugely effective. Craig is very good at adding deception to a lot of his shots, serves and return of serves. It makes it very hard to play against.

Thanks for the video, especially for the slow motion low camera view. One thing i noticed that Tom sir holds the bat incorrectly. When playing forhand shots, his index finger comes near the middle of the bat. According to chinese theory, bat should be hold in shakehand grip in which index finger makes right angle to handle of the bat. Please let me know if i am wrong?

Another good way I've found to practice this is to get a really good backspin on yourself on a hard floor, so the ball bounces high back toward you, then perform the shot. This way you can nearly replicate a fall from table height coming toward you and you don't need a partner

Not sure what video editor you use but you should find out how to change the audio pitch for the slow Mo parts so it doesn't have that screchy effect. In Sony Vegas I know you "lock pitch to stretch" in audio properties, not sure how you do it for other programs.

@TomLodziak

Mostly it is to do with technique. You don't need a really expensive bat, although good quality rubbers will help you generate more spin. Here's some recommendations: www.tabletenniscoach.me.uk/best-table-tennis-bats-for-intermediate-players/

Tom, I've just discovered your videos having recently returned to TT. I'm looking to buy a bat and am not sure what to go for. If a bat is described as being suitable for an advanced player would it be detrimental to my game as an intermediate player or is it just that I may not get the full benefit of a more expensive bat? Any advice you could give would be great. Thanks.

I'm getting better at it now. Key is not to guess. Watch the ball closely, wait for it to bounce, react quickly and then hit it hard. The more wiggly's I face the better I get at working at the spin. So partly it's down to plenty of practice.
