An extra layer of bar tape can help absorb road buzz and make things a little more comfortable.
Click here to subscribe to GCN: gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN
If you're struggling for grip, heading for the cobbles or just prefer a thicker bar to hold on to, then double wrapping your bar tape is a great way to get that extra comfort. In fact, many pros prefer a double wrap for long days in the saddle.
It's important to have your first layer of bar tape clean, dry and grease-free before you wrap your second layer over the top. Then it's pretty much just a case of wrapping as normal - you can check out the full method here: gcn.eu/1iIaPVu
Alternatively, you can bolster the width on the hoods by using an old inner tube as your first layer and wrapping a single layer of bar tape over the top.

The Inner Tube Method really is a good one -- leave the valve sticking out the drops and you can pump your tape up to a comfortable pressure. I personally recommend around 50psi / 3.5 bar.

Don't figure-8 around the bracket on the first layer of tape, just figure-8 the second layer. It will keep the hoods from feeling thicker than they normally are.

I use a slightly less bulky alternative to double wrapping. I get a length of cushy cork or cheap wrap and apply it lengthwise along the top of the bar (where my palms will rest) and the inside contact points of the drops (similar to the fizik gel pads). Then I wrap my tape around that. It has all the advantages of double wrap, but is significantly less bulky and weighs a lot less than gel pads (also doesn't break down over the course of a ride like gel).

Ooops - better not use WD-40 to degrease your bars - because it is a light lubricant and will saturate the bottom layer of tape with oil. Try rubbing alcohol.

It's funny every bike shop video and cycling channel video have you wrapping your tape to the outside, yet every video of a tour team mechanic has them wrapping to the inside on the drops and toward the back on the tops, this method makes more sense. Yes when you are just lightly resting your hands on the bars you might be pushing in the opposite of the wrap but when your on it and pulling on the bars and the tape is under the most stress your will be twisting it tighter and not looser.

I really feel that there is a space in the market for making cycling specific electrical tape. I mean if rapha did it, they could whack a pink stripe on it and a Team Sky logo; sell it for £30 a roll. Profit.

good video, my fellow viewers already made all the fun comments. so I will just say I will remember this when I get my roadbike (hopefully in the spring). Test rode one, and hands ached just from rolling around for twenty minutes and I felt every stone in the tarmac. That said my current ride is a hardtail XC bike and I hadn't ridden dropped bars for 25 years!!

The thing I'm always curious about is why do people wrap their bar tape backwards these days? If you start at the stem and go out, you don't need that extra tape in the center near the stem. Just start towards the center, overlap a tiny bit and wrap to the outside. When you get to the end, cut and tuck the excess into the bar-end and you're done. No extra tape to come undone.

While I'm not a WD40 hater ... I would this time absolutely suggest against using it for cleaning the bar tape if you want to wrap another layer on top. WD40 is mineral oil and will work against any glueing effect of the top layer. in fact it is a very good solvent for adhesive residues. Try to clean your bike after you removed a sticker or something you will notice how good WD40 is for that. Instead I'd use something like isopropyl which is a good solvent for water AND mineral oils and very fast evaporating too.

I wrap my first layer of bar tape to the brakes only and fix with electrical tape, then run a second layer the full length of the handlebar, as per normal. That way I have double taped drops for a solid grip when pushing on and sprinting and still single taped bars for standard riding/climbing. Genius, huh!

I stick a piece of extra / old bar tape onto the bars where my hands generally sit, then wrap the bars with that extra layer of padding underneath. Just as good as an extra layer of bar tape without the weight, or more importantly for a broke guy like me, price penalty. Sure does help.

I've always been told that once you get to the flat part or top of the bars you need to wrap towards you because when your hands are in this position, you are gripping and rotating the tape in the same direction. By wrapping away from you are loosening the tape over time. Hope that makes sense.

You should have mentioned how you reverse the direction of the wrap after the shifters to make the wind go away from the bike after the shifters. You did the trick at the shifters, but didn’t mention it. The first wrap on my bar tape did not switch the wrap direction and I mistakenly followed suit with my second wrap because you failed to mention it in your video.

The idea is that the direction of the tape should follow the direction/the way your hand rotates on the bar at high effort. IE, when sprinting, your hand rotates outwards on the drop, therefore the tape should go from inside to outside. On the top tho, most people wouldn’t rotate their hand forward, they would rotate backwards... so the direction of top tape should go from front of the bike to back. Going with the direction of the twist from the hand helps tighten the tape. Go the opposite way and you’re basically pushing the tape back/countering the work you did in pulling the tape right when you were wrapping.

+Christian Ortega you can get dual colored specific tape (lizardskins) or just wrap one colour just passed the hoods, cut and tape and then start the next colour on the top of the hoods. I did it once where they overlapped so each colour kept the other in place so I didn't need tape at the transition area but taping the bottom layer works fine. The top layer will be held down by just wrapping over it once and then finish as usual. It can be difficult to get a good transition on the hood cover area but with some practice and patience there's nothing that looks better imo. I had white tops and red drops on my red/white frame and it was stunning. Just changed to lizardskins dsp 3.2 though and I think it'll be hard to go back to something thinner.

+ThatWolffe I believe its due to the legacy of Eddy Merckx and his long use of white handlebar tape, I may be wrong here, but it is damn sexy. I quote a Velominatus here; "White is a glorious color to grace a set of handlebars. It emphasizes the sensual sweep of the drops and the beautiful curve from the hoods to the tops. It brings out the crisp shadows of the cables running beneath the tape to highlight a perfect wrap. It stands as a testament to the care that is undertaken in maintaining the machine, for without meticulous attention white does not stay white for long. It states that these bars are graced not by the sullied hands of a domestique, but by the clean grip of a leader."

+Lane Williams +1 tobbydick256 and I guess there is less resistance on a turbo trainer so you might be baring more weight on your hands, not sure though since I don't have one.

Aryan Adibmehr Yes you are right I think. When riding on the road you are (probably absolutely physicaly incorrect) constantly ''falling forward''

tobbydick256 I actually meant the opposite, that you are ''falling forward'' more on the trainer than on the road. Keep in mind this is assuming the trainer has less resistance than the road so you'll be supporting less of your upper body weight by your legs, how true it is I don't know. Have you ever noticed if you're riding around really slowly your hand feel a bit loaded? hence supporting less body weight with your legs.

I have a CycleOps which came with two blocks to prop the front wheel up if one so desired. Two blocks = slight uphill feel, one block = level, and no blocks = slight downhill, because your back wheel is lifted up off the ground a bit. I always use one block for this exact reason, all my weight was going onto my hands and they would ache. Also with a trainer, assuming your bike is locked in position, you should be able to easily sit up and just pedal and give your arms a rest. I do this all the time. This would probably be impossible/dangerous on those trainers where your bike is freely riding against floor rollers.

Hey cheif, your wrapping the bars backwards! Watch the suggested video called how to change bar tape like a pro mechanic at the end of this video to see how to do it right. Or ask Dan, he does it right in his vid.

Simon did it all wrong. The pros don't double wrap like that, so why did he? He should have consulted one of his "pro" counterparts! You wrap the opposite way on a double wrap.......I bet even Neal knows that! And where's "The Boss" when you need him........with his spot on test team know how! ;-D
