Good vid - lots of variables to consider. In an “ideal world” you’d just use a running sinker straight down to the hook. A big point not mentioned is many fisher folks trying to cast a bait to New Zealand when the Bream, Whiting, Tailor, Flathead etc are feeding in a gutter 40 feet in front of them. The ability to accurately cast a bait to where the fish are, trumps casting ability (distance) most times.
@RogerOsborneFishing

Hi Mark, yes I often use a running sinker straight to the hook depending on what type of fishing I am doing. You are right about fish often being close to shore. It is good to posses a long cast for specific applications. Many times, a long cast is a game changer when fishing for Snapper off the rocks.

Hi Davouchi, sorry about my slow response. Ok, there are a few things that influence sinker selection eg fishing application, line breaking strain, light-medium-or heavy fishing rod, bait size etc. There is actually a fair bit to it when I think about it. I will add this subject to my list of video topics. Roger

Great video Roger. Years ago, I use to go down to our local football oval to hone my casting technique, until one day my snapper sinker line snapped and the heavy sinker sailed through the air, twice as far and fast than it would have if still dragging line behind it. I heard a loud BANG, as it went through the side of a caravan parked is a blokes driveway, about 180 meters away. A very expensive cast that turned out to be !.

very handy hints...i like the long cast information and the use of a shorter leader!!...........the spool line class makes a lot of sense,i cant say i have been a stickler for what i regard as light gear,but 25 lb isnt really light line class,but to me it is i do tend to use max 40lb line and consider anything less light line...so,ill begin respooling my reels with the max line class it is certified or recommended to use on the spool, and stop being a skull dragger lol, ill see how i go thanks for the great info!!...ill post a comment after i go for a fish next week,hopefully i can get better distance and get some good fish too!!

Just by changing to a snapper sinker from a bomb sinker i was able to cast the same distance with half the weight. So sinker weights in relation to rod size and rod sinker/lure rating plays a major part in it as well. With a 13foot surf rod and 5oz (141grams which is what the rod is rated for) i can hit around 100meters. I have a set up of 3 for pier fishing, close in under 5-25meters with a 7ft 2oz rated rod, middle of around 50meter with a 8ft and a 2oz and my 13 ft surf rod for around 100meters at 4-5oz depending on weather. I am using a paternoster rigs with all my rods for snapper / whiting / flatheads.

On the day that I really feel like I want to Cast out Farther I'm not sure what distance it may be, But the cast in most cases will almost completely empty the reel itself.

What are your thoughts on braid on the reel with a mono leader v mono for everything??
@RogerOsborneFishing
@RogerOsborneFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, braid has a better diameter than mono however you need to exert power for a long cast and my concern is that there is high probability of cutting your finger otherwise you would need some sort of finger protection. I don't think braid is suitable for Rock Fishing. Roger
@TheAutisticAngler
@TheAutisticAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Braid on a sandy beach is ok. some people use braid straight through, others use a tapered leader. With Braid you MUST protect your finger. I use an old inner tube cut off. Braid casts further and sits better in a strong wind. Mono is more forgiving on the cast because it has a little stretch, which is why it's not very sensitive to bites, whereas with braid you see every nibble. I wouldnt use mono straight through where we live, England because we have to use heavier leads to hold in te tides. If you throw a 6oz lead, you would need a 70lb mono for casting, the thickness of whihc would seriously shorten your cast. We tend to use a 15lb mono mainline with a 70lb shockleader.

@@RogerOsborneFishing Hi Roger, use a bait clip to join the bait to the lead which stops the bait flapping around, the bait releases from the weight the moment it hits the water. Could I introduce you to a site where this is shown very well, it's called TA fishing, here in the UK, look at the beach fishing rigs. Good ideas here, I like the pulley pennel rig. For max distance, cast out before you bait up and retrieve - pump and wind. Don't have the line wrapped on under too much pressure and have a leader of only 12''. This is for max distance. Wet line, not too tight on reel and a short leader and have the sinker hanging 4'- 6' from the tip of the rod. You get further from a wharf because of this. Oh' and flick the hell out of it, max your speed and power, the rod and line will be fine, don't cast it like you are passing a ball, launch it like a rocket going to hell, never to return.

@@RogerOsborneFishing I forgot the parts about having your spool as full as possible, never put a hook through your runners, don't let anything nick or abrase a runner, wipe them over with some mr sheen, even spray the line if you use seperate line for traces it's silicone based, great stuff and when you were casting you were hindered by the fence behind you. If you did all this stuff including mr sheen on your line and spool and could use full extended arm MAX POWER and try to snap the rod [ never going to happen ] you would get noticeable more distance and it would make another vid subject! lol. Seems crazy to have to fill up a spool with line you will never use to make it all work right. With the level of technology these days, the makers of reels/spools should make spools adjustable. Or maybe get extra spools with the reel. The old reel needs upgrading big-time but the designers never ask us older fishermen what we want. Like, I want a reel where I can flip the crank to either side instantly............hear, hear. I prefer a much longer crank stem but these are not adjustable. So, hey DESIGNERS, do you see what I mean ? We want to be amazed at all the new refinements you can give us to enjoy. Yes I'm a dedicated SRF, spin reel fisherman and I love everything about it except right-hand-cranks. Why ? I have learnt from years of experience to protect my right hand at all times from hooks, barbs, fish and sea critters. So it's only job is to hold and work the rod. You see, your right hand has extra skills that your lefty don't. These would be writing/drawing, picking your right nostril, shaking hands, using scissors, shooting a firearm and even wiping ya bum. Please remember not to make these innovations too expensive for us and why not grab a cheap fishing combo on the weekend and you will begin to understand the limitations of the sport through pure under-development of fishing gear.

That reminds me of the old Mitchell Garcia 300 reels I used as a kid. They offered regular and high capacity spools, regular didn't need very much line to be full.

Most people use a cheaper backing mono line under there braided main line to pre fill the spool. That way you only have vto load the spool with as much of the more expensive braid as you need.

goddamn, watched this video skipping every 3 minute or so and still couldn't figure out how to double my cast. Can you simplify your vids even more and just get to it, don't need all the explanation and shit.

Robert, there are a number of factors that influence distance. Casting Technique, Line Diameter, Aerodynamics, Correctly Spooled Reel, Balanced Equipment etc. Watch all of the video as I cover a number of these.

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod kzfaq.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.
