FYI for those that are too lazy to sew (like i was), here's a quick fix: open your first aid kit and grab that little bandage hook fastener (the one with the metal hook clips attached to a piece of elastic material). Works perfect and requires zero effort!

This is the best way to downsize your hat. I used a piece of elastic from my boxers lol. Thanks bro

Great fix. These mesh hats always seem to be a bit larger than standard fitted. For me that is. I knew there had to be a solution. Thanks! You earned a subscriber.

I used this method but instead of sewing the elastic to the outer part of the sweatband, I flipped the sweat over and sewed the elastic to the other side so it's not visible plus when I put my cap on I don't brush up against the piece of elastic.

I'm not sure on the thickness. I found it in my wife's sewing box. It's about a quarter inch wide

How long should I cut the elastic?
@thegreenworkbench7 жыл бұрын
Joey Scotti Try sewing one end first then pulling it tight to where you need it, sew that end and then cut. That way you know you haven't gone too short.

Is there a way to upsize
@thegreenworkbench2 жыл бұрын
You can cut a 1/2" slit in the back seam to add a little extra room, but that does ruin the hat. You can also get a hat stretcher and slowly stretch out the material. I've done that with success on a baseball cap and a cowboy hat.

Do I see the elastic to the inside of the band and hat together

Just sew it to the band

Sorry another Question the hat I have is a size 8 I need it to be 2 size smaller how do I make that happen
@thegreenworkbench9 ай бұрын
@rockonparanormal4044 Not sure if going down 2 sizes will work without looking funny, but the process would be the same. Just pull the elastic band tighter.
@TheMAJIKALNinjaBrett6 жыл бұрын
Are you sewing that just to the sweat band?

Have you tried using the foam tape technique? If so did you prefer that method or this one? Great vid btw
@thegreenworkbench7 жыл бұрын
With the foam tape, my hair always seems to find and stick to the sticky backing no matter how well I put it on.
@zacharyalberti85997 жыл бұрын
what r u using?
@thegreenworkbench7 жыл бұрын
Zachary Alberti It's just a piece of elastic. You can buy a roll at a fabric store or poach it from something else you are no longer using.

wouldn't this be irritating on the back of your head though? kinda like tags on the back of a shirt? i hate that. And i don't want it to look wrinkled around the outside of my head because of the elastic strap. that would just look really weird. It would probably make the hat look non fitted around the top of the hat around your head. I was kinda looking for a more sophisticated way of doing this. like the way a tailor would do to it or a milliner? I just watched something about soaking your hat in almost boiling water for a while then putting it on and letting it dry. Also some hat bills have cardboard in them (this would mess it up) if it was plastic inside it would be ok. But tailors or milliners would probably take out the seams and cut then sew it back to make it smaller. Granted it would cost almost or even more than what you paid for the hat to get this done, but if it is sentimental then i guess it would be worth it to just take it to a tailor or milliner.
@stradavarius764 жыл бұрын
Getting it tailored would probably cost more than just buying a new hat. It actually doesn't bother me at all and I am the same way with tags. I think it is because it is going in the same direction as the band. It doesn't gather much, but if you were trying to downsize a lot it might. The boiling method probably only works for wool hats, and you are right, it would destroy a cardboard bill. Thanks for your comments!

Why don't you just buy your size instead of downsizing a bigger cap? WTF
@thegreenworkbench6 жыл бұрын
Toto San Seems simple right? I often find one size is too small and the next size up is too big. There are even variations among the same size. I buy big to avoid headaches and then make the adjustment myself. This particular hat was purchased at a ball game in Japan where they didn’t have my exact size and I would never get another chance to buy one. Or...maybe you changed your hairstyle from bushy to buzz cut. I like a perfectly fit hat and this is one way to make that happen. Helped me and hopefully helped someone else too.
@luckyhobbit88946 жыл бұрын
Toto San some hats come in small/medium or medium/large and they're both too big for my strange cranium so this trick will help me a ton.
@RogerRabbitt6 жыл бұрын
Also since new era caps are hand made, sizes that may be the same, often fit different. So if you buy one online and it doesn't fit the way you thought, this is a good idea
@travisbarton7336 жыл бұрын
Maybe because it's a one size fits all hat, that you love, where the elastic isn't quite what it used to be and they don't sell the hat anymore...duhhhh!!
@dogmosatchmo5 жыл бұрын
Worked at Lids for 3 years, and most New Era hats, except mesh and certain materials, will shrink. Also, if you cut your hair your hat will fit differently. If you lose weight your hat will fit differently. There are many hats New Era releases in extremely limited numbers, and arent full size runs. Your comment shows me you wear velcro strap hats, and have zero business in this conversation. You are probably one of those guys that wears, sandals way too much.
