Another wonderful video, thank you, Anika. I'm an instructor and I've been training online and off for almost two decades. I feel your videos are the most professional sewing videos on the web today. I don't think most people realize the amount of work that goes into recording training videos. Your speech tone, cadence, speed, and enunciation are impeccable. Your instructions are unbelievably clear, and the quality of the audio and video recording is perfect. There's no echo, no background noise, and the lighting is bright and consistent. The editing is excellent, in that the cuts are almost imperceptible, and therefore not at all distracting. Your detailed, yet concise explanations are perfect. We get exactly what we need, no more and no less. Obviously, when people are sharing their knowledge for free, I'm not going to fret about the little things or expect everyone to be videography experts and have the most expensive recording equipment. But I do appreciate your style and professionalism, and can't thank you enough for giving me the confidence to start sewing clothing. Also, thank you for the free pattern, I can't wait to try my hand at princess seams!

Anna Dalli Hi Anna, sorry that I wasn’t clear with this. It is up to you on the back of the garment, you can pass near the dart, through the centre of the dart or to the side of it. Would it make a difference if you removed the side dart first and then draw the princess seam and cut the pattern?
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
Ky Ra great question! Again another thing I should have covered. Unfortunately it will be very difficult to remove the side dart first. Where would it go? The only reason we are able to remove it, is because we have drawn from the side dart to the edge of a piece of fabric (the side front piece) and the cut this out. When the side front is still joined to the front you won’t be able to ‘send’ the dart anywhere. Does that make sense? And this will give you the best result. I will cover this in my Dart Manipulation tutorial coming soon. Aneka x

Such. A. Great. Tutorial. one question: for the first princess line example, what shall we do about the waist dart when do the sewing since the pricess line didn't go through the dart so the dart is still there M shall we still sew it on the centre front piece and then join the side front piece ? a little confused here. thank in advance. appreciate your detail and clear tutorial so much. million thanks
@MadetoSew5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion. If the princess seam doesn't absorb the dart then you don't want to sew it separately to the princess seam, as if the princess seam is close to the dart this would look quite odd. So either ignore the dart and this will create a looser fit. OR move the dart amount into the princess seam and absorb the dart amount in the seam. Does that clear up the confusion? Thanks, Aneka

@gertivanlier53793 жыл бұрын
Very clear instruction, thanks! There is however one thing I don 't understand about the second dress. The seam of the front side part, from bust to hip, will always be longer than the seam of the front part, because it has all the curve from the dart. You can not just shorten it, it would ruin not only the pattern of the fabric, but the lengths of both parts, measured along the grainlines, would not be the same. How do you deal with that? I divide the dart over both parts, but of course you don't have a straight front part anymore. Thanks again!
@MadetoSew3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gerti, You can also adjust the front pattern piece to be the same length as the side front. You would simply take a horizontal line across the pattern piece and then add in the amount. This won't affect any of the grainlines as the extra is added through the whole front pattern piece. You can do this where you need it to work with the pattern. Does that help? Aneka

This is most helpful. I have a question though, is it advisable to put the princess Line from the shoulder to pass through the middle of the waist dart and shape accordingly?
@MadetoSew3 жыл бұрын
It really doesn't have to, you can move that line from the shoulder towards the side of the body if you prefer. It can be placed where you think is the best location for your design. You may want to remove the dart in the shaping, you may not. Again this is something you have the opportunity to decide. Aneka 😃

I did make a mock up and it went together well. But I was using a lighter weight fabric... im lost should both lines measure the exact same ?
@MadetoSew2 жыл бұрын
Hello, a lot of patterns won't have the lines measuring the exact same; they will expect you to ease the fabric to fit together. But, I was always taught to have both lines the same length. How much out are they? If it is only a small amount say 3/8" (1cm) then you shouldn't have an issue sewing them, even if you don't ease them together? If when you sewed the garment it went together well, and the two seams fitted and it looks good then you should be fine with what you have. Hope this helps?

@MadetoSew5 жыл бұрын
I recommend that you follow the second option, so if you are drafting a princess seam line away from the waist dart (like I do in option 1). You should move the waist dart, like I did in the second example to cling to the side pattern piece. The WHOLE dart is taken from the side front piece and the front pattern piece has the smooth line or seam that you want to be visible on the finish garment. Does that make sense? I find that this provides a neater finished seam. Let me know if you have any other questions. Aneka
@fornamnefternamn48692 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I have one question though. When one has cut and closed the side part, the princess seem curve gets a bit pointy at the pivot point. Shouldn't one smooth that out in some way? Rounding it and then truing? Or? On the first example that point got quite sharp.
@MadetoSew2 жыл бұрын
Hello, Yes if it's really pointy you can curve it off slightly, loosing about 3mm (1/8") off the point. For the first example once I added the seam allowances it probably would have been enough to smooth out the stitching line. But if yours is looking pointy, smooth it off and of course check your truing. Does that help? Aneka

How do I know where I want to start my princess seam? What will be the difference in the dress?
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
Hi Hanna, this is really up to you as the designer. Where you decide to draw the starting line from the armhole or shoulder and down to the hem of the garment is the seam that you will see on the dress. So think about where you want this to be? It is simply a design line at this point. Why not have a look at princess seam dresses on the internet, you could always copy the design lines of another dress to start with? Once you have made up a sample garment you and tried it on you will start to learn where you like the seams to start on your figure. Does that make sense? Or you could follow along with the tutorial, Princess Seam 1 is for the red dress. Aneka x

Hi, Concerning the first princess seam you demonstrated. After you've removed the side dart, how to you deal eith the waist dart on the center front portion?

Hi Don-Marie, you need to deal with the waist dart like I show in the Second Princess Seam demonstration from 19:26 - 31:25. It doesn't matter whether you draft from the armhole or the shoulder, or whether you have a a side dart that meets your new seam or not (like in the second example where I extend it). The waist dart should be removed from the Side Front panel, to keep the Centre Front piece with the new seam line you want to see on the garment. Does this make sense? I hope you like the tutorial? So if I don't want any dart in that dress and don't want it as fitted as the second example do I have to remove the waist dart somehow or do I leave it as it is and just don't sew it?
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
Ky Ra if you don’t want the dress to be fitted at the waist you simply IGNORE the waist dart. Like it doesn’t exist. Just like I did in Princess Seam 1. Does that make sense? Sorry that this wasn’t clear. You will need to deal with the side dart though, otherwise the side front and the side back pieces won’t see together. The side dart needs to be folded out or sewn. thank you for this tutorial...i generally dont wear shift dresses because they dont suit my figure but the princess seam mod is perfect...i just got the copen (i love the name) and am looking forward to trying it...i have a question about the back dart...do i just shift the whole thing over or draw the line right to it like you did in the front...and does it only work if you start from shoulder...tfs:)
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
cherriesnhoney Hi there! Sorry I wasn’t clear with the back of the pattern. You do not have to start at the shoulder in the back, you can also start in the armhole. Do you want to remove the dart from the pattern in the back to make it more fitted?! If so then you will need to take the dart from the side panel that you create. If you don’t want to make the garment fitted by incorporating the dart you can ignore it. Does that make sense? You can take the princess seam in the back as close to the dart as you want, I believe my princess seam (on the red dress) is 1/2” (1.2cm) away from the dart at the waist point. I did not incorporate the waist darts in the pattern. Does this help? Have I made sense? Aneka x

Made to Sew yes you totally have...thank you. i misunderstood and thought to mirror the dart to the side back instead of moving the princess line closer to it and doing it like the front...hehe, im still a newb , this will be great practice though:)
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
You can mirror the dart to the side back piece, it just depending on where you want that seam to run down the back of the body. Think about the placement on your figure (or the person you are making the dress for). Really pleased your having a go. Please let me know how you get on. Aneka x

If I’m altering a pattern w/o a side dart on the front- should I still cut a dart shape like that?
@MadetoSew4 жыл бұрын
No. You only need to remove the dart if you have one in the pattern and no longer want it in the pattern for a princess seam. Hope that makes sense? Aneka

I have a question.. is it possible if i don't draft the princess seam to the hem of the garment. I mean, i will sew it start from the shoulder and stop at the waist.. is it still a princess seam or it is not the right way to do it
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
Great question. Yes you can draft the princess seam and stop at the waist, this is still a princess seam. You will then need a waist seam on the garment to attach the bodice to a skirt. Does that make sense? Aneka
@asnaheyna53746 жыл бұрын
Made to Sew but what about if i make it using your copen pattern.. doesn't it look weird if i just stop at the waist.. i am also super lazy to sew all the way to the hem 😄
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
If you use the Copen pattern you would still need to put a seam horizontally at the waist, if you wanted to stop the Princess Seam at the waist. Otherwise how are you going to join the pieces together? You would have a very complicated pattern for sewing. I would recommend going straight to the hem, it is easier and less time consuming (I promise) than having a very complicated pattern that is a princess seam to the waist and then a normal pattern - that isn't really possible unless you do something at the waist to allow the pattern to be joined? Aneka :-))

Hello Mam. I want to know can we cut the princess seam at the back same as we cut at the front ? I mean we fold the back bodice and front bodice together cut the princess seam. I know at back there is no bust apex but still can we cut like in front?
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
Hello, You want to cut the princess seam at the back differently. Especially in a fitted garment, because as you mention the front has been drafted for a cup. If it was a very loose fit you might get away with cutting them the same, but this isn't something I advise. I show how to do the back at 40.00 in the video. Aneka
@neiturelover6 жыл бұрын
Okay, thanks for replying 😃 where we can find the point at the back for the seam like we make apex as the point?
@neiturelover6 жыл бұрын
Or is it up to us to wherever we like to mark the point?
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
It is up to you, you don't need to use the point like you do in the front. I often go with the waist dart but it can be anywhere you want really. Aneka

Blessed Good Afternoon Where did you purchase your dress form?
@MadetoSew3 жыл бұрын
The brand of dress form I use is Alvanon. You can look them up online, they have offices around the world. They are more focused for business use and are quite expensive. But if that's the type of form you need they are very good.

how can i remove the waist dart in the first option?
@MadetoSew5 жыл бұрын
Aneka

Where can we buy a dress form?
@MadetoSew6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! The dress form like mine is from a company called Alvanon. They are expensive and I have saved up for one over the years. You DO not need to spend this much on a dressform. I would recommend purchasing a very cheap dressform like this (amzn.to/2G3UkDf) and padding up to your size (I recommend this over adjustable mannequins) if you are someone that sews for you! If you want to sew for other people this can also be useful for bespoke work. Otherwise Kennett & Lindsell, Wolfform, Stockman or Alvanon are great brands, you can buy some second hand much cheaper. Good luck! Aneka

If I removed side darts then when we joint back part to front part then back part remain long because of side dart front part going to up what is solution for this?
@MadetoSew5 жыл бұрын
You do not need to do anything. The back will now match the front, because remember that you would normally sew the dart in the front. To then make the front sew to the back? Aneka :-))

What do notches and grain lines do?
@MadetoSew3 жыл бұрын
Grainlines are for positioning the pattern on the fabric, and notches are to be matched up. I talk about it in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ortjfbJ8mNbWiok.html and I will do a dressmaking specific 'how to read a pattern' in a couple of weeks. 😊

I'm always irked why 'professional' pattern cutters use 1.5 cm sa which I find too much.. You should never use 1 5 cm on curves like necklines or armholes. I use 0.5 cm SA which is easier to navigate and creates a cleaner less bulky look.. You should never ever put 1.5 cm on princess lines as you are asking for trouble on curved lines. 1 cm is adequate. On acute curves you should use 0.5 cms... I personally think your cutting princess lines is a little, long winded..it's technically correct An Easier method which I teach is make a block up which I teach using draping techniques. Once you check the balance and fit of hip block is perfect, then you can start designing your dress pattern.. I use a draped hip block always checked for balance and fit. , Darts are already stitched in place, on shoulder and waist to create a close fitted block (I use a unique method of just gluing my darts together on sample. No sewing machine required) on dummy. I add fabric to desired length by using masking tape. You can then draw you princess lines in any position, omitting the stitched darts. The shoulder dart and waist dart will now be obsolete.. As long as your new style lines go over or near your original darts so it can lie flat once cut out, you will be OK.. You can draw crazy acute curves or more traditional style lines.. Always notch at right angles before you cut out your new style lines.. Place cut out dress pattern onto fabric. Mark seam alllowances on the fabric , then cut out U should always retain your original discrepancy between the 2 lines of the princess line dress otherwise you will forgo your original fit of the block. You can shrink the excess side if they are natural fibres by basting the seams together and shrinking out fullness (just like a tailored sleeve on a jacket). It will work better if you use 0.5 to 1 cm maximum... I checked your sewing of the princess line and you never talked about convex and concave which I call the 'mountains' and :valleys '. The valleys(concave) should always be sewn on top of mountain (convex) to be stitched in easily and accurately.. Maybe you should talk about that more to your subscribers. My new instructional videos on :draping, pattern cutting a dress and Tailoring will be available from my website next month.. My new 2 part course :My new title for both videos is : "Developing and sewing a Sheath dress from a draped hip block" .. Draping and cutting a Sheath dress is over 20 hours long and goes into depth on the how's and why's of draping, combining flat pattern cutting pattern cutting, handling cloth hand sewing and machine sewing techniques My new ecommerce website will be launched shorty.. www.jojoremeny.com.. Im a Fashion designer and Tailor. Of course every designer and pattern cutter has their own way of cutting and assembling and yours is a very technical typical pattern cutters method. But as a professional pattern cutter you should know pattern cutting is an art form as well as a technical subject and should be taught in a more creative manner..

Hi Jojo, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed reply. It's great to share with others that there are a variety of techniques that can be used. In this tutorial I have shared the methods I use.
@jojoremeny3 жыл бұрын
@@MadetoSew Thanks for your quick response.. Im not knocking your methods, but as a pattern cutter, you should teach what you actually practice.. You said that you never sew 1 5 cm SA In your own work but teach this, in your tutorials!! That's not a good practice to teach if your tutorials are not following your own ways. My new tutorials are exactly how I pattern cut and sew.. I learnt from 5 different master tailors(one won Savile row of the year and he is 92 yrs of age and until the pandemic was still coming into my shop to help me cut jackets.) From those, tailors I learnt my own system of pattern cutting trousers and this, method I teach to my students.. You never stop learning new methods/ techniques and you should elaborate this on your videos that yours is not the only way, and students should experiment.. On my video soon to be released on draping, flat pattern cutting and sewing a dress, I emphasise this and show variations on each method I'm teaching.. Perhaps you should do the same. I will be putting up segments of my tutorials soon.
