Very good drawing! I think its important to note to viewers that while the Loomis method is indeed more accurate and proportional to the model being drawn (most of the time), it often takes longer than free hand methods which require good intuition and understanding of 3 dimensional structure(s) of the model, in this case, head. In conclusion the Loomis method is very suitable for beginner to advanced artists whom struggle with accuracy and proportions. remember artists, its the subtle imperfections that give life and beauty to drawings. Experiment with your own interpretations and you shall see your unique art style bloom, and flourish!
@ManWithoutThePants9 ай бұрын
I would like to add that this is the average head of the Loomis method and Loomis also describes in his books how you can change proportions and use it to draw all kinds of abominations. It is a good method for understanding the basic structure of the head, but in time you can let go of it or keep just parts of it. Whatever suits you, but just try to not just force all your faces in the average model if you are drawing from reference or doing a live portrait of someone.

Loomis was a great artist, and he said, very specifically, that anybody who tries to draw the head and place the features without some sort of system is doomed to fail 9 times out of 10. You can't freehand a portrait. Well, you *can,* but more often than not it will be incorrect.
@tsdobbiАй бұрын
@@dpelpal "You can't freehand a portrait. Well, you can, but more often than not it will be incorrect." Drawing with the right side of the Brain, ventures to teach you exactly that. If you want your specialty to be portraits that book is a good book to study and work through and can warrant rather astonishingly rapid results if you dedicate yourself to it.

Loomis's book can seen rather daunting at first. Seems almost like learning an algebra equation. Because initially the point is to really drive home the understanding of the shapes and how they flow. When you see a master using Loomis, what they do is much "simpler" than what you will find in Loomis's book. Because they already have an understanding of shape and form. In my opinion just understanding the form of simple shapes is the biggest key to drawing. Once you have that down like 80% of the battle is won, because ANYTHING can be constructed out of simple shapes and broken down into simple shapes. Then things like anatomy, texture, shading will be the focus, but the thing is from that point on you just have to focus on honing your skills on the detail. When you are drawing from reference actually study it, deconstruct it. Load the source image into a program and deconstruct it. Say you are doing a portrait of a face. Do the loomis method on the image of the face itself. This will all lead to a better understanding of the simple shapes that make up complex shapes.

My only disappointment was that I was really looking forward to seeing the finished article, fully shaded, but I guess shading is another topic all together, and this is a free tutorial for which I'm grateful for, and it's certainly interesting to watch. I know you said in answer to another question asking what paper you used, you said A4, but what's your preferred thickness for pencil drawing, as in GSM? I know the tooth can still vary, and it can be a case of trial and error.

Where the ear attached at the top of the ear looks to be the center of the oval which is in line with the brow line and reaches to the outer edge of the eyebrow…and the bottom is just below the bottom of the ear, so when the head rotates you can use the eyebrow and ear to adjust the widening or foreshortening of that oval plane.

The Loomis method doesn’t cover every feature in detail. In order to get good at proportions, practice drawing lots of basic Loomis head while referring to head references at different angles. Eventually, it’ll be ingrained into your visual library.

I tried this and many other methods... Ultimately what works for me is starting with an eye and everything else is relative to it... even when drawing myself... We are only 'relatively' proportional and never strictly following some proportions so why so much hullabaloo around what is not.
@Mizter_izy6 ай бұрын
Exactly, I also start with the eyes then work from there. I do feel it was absurd though cos the loomis thing wasn't working for when drawing from pictures. I only use it when drawing imaginary characters. Now that I have seen that your style is similar to mine am so happy.☺️☺️
@plan4life9 ай бұрын
If I might be critical, your drawing is great but the angle of eyes is off because the initial middle slice of the circle was not at the right angle. The eye on the left of your drawing should be a bit lower down. I was never taught to draw by any method so I just draw by observation so I see straight away when angles etc are off. What I would be inclined to do if I could be arsed to draw is with a copy of the original picture plot these points actually on the picture itself just to be sure you are getting the angles the same.

They make it look so easy but it's very difficult in practice. Also the Loomis method is difficult with real people because the foundation he uses to build faces on is very rigid and real faces differ in proportion and not all are alike meaning they often wont fit with the ball method he uses.
