I've recently got into drawing Celtic Knots and have been using a method I've used for years, adapted from a book I had over twenty years ago. If you know which book it might be, please do let me know because I've forgotten!
I do have some recommendations for finding more about Celtic Art. A couple of channels on KZfaq; David Nicholls and Aon Celtic Art are both really helpful. I've also been working through Aidan Meehan's 'The Book of Celtic Design' and have found lots of inspiration there.
I also have a watercolour celtic knot tutorial over on my other channel:

SUPPLIES
Pens:
I like uni-pin waterproof fine line drawing pens. I use every size from 0.03 to 0.8 so I buy them in sets of multiple sizes whenever I see an offer on them!
www.jacksonsart.com/uni-pin-d...
This link is an affiliate link and if you use it I'll get a small commission. If it's your first time ordering from the site, you'll also get a 10% discount on your whole order.
Sketchbook:
Made by me to be perfect for making circular designs! I used to sell these but they were pricey to make in small quantities so didn't sell many ... but if there's demand, I could look into it again!
ABOUT ME
This is my second youtube channel. Find my watercolour tutorials over at @LouDavis
I'm a printmaker, specialising in screen print. Most of my work begins with fine liner drawing so I'm highlighting that on this channel.

I love the David Nicholls videos! He’s quite funny and has quite a portfolio of beautiful art. I am still trying to practice enough so I can figure the weaving by myself. Your explanations as you drew the knots are very helpful. Thank you! Hope to see more.

what an amazing video, i have a task ahead of me where i need to draw celtic knots as decorations and i was dreading the task due to the complexity of it all, but this video seems like a really good explanation on how to draw them. my artwork will have curves edges, hopefully I can find a way to curve the reference lattice.
@loudavisdrawing
@loudavisdrawing 3 ай бұрын
Yes, you can bend the reference grid round a corner - like you do when drawing a celtic knot circle. I hope you have fun!

Hi Lou! Just starting to experiment with Celtic Knots, your videos are the clearest I have found, thanks! I am wondering if there is a general principle of using a certain number (odd or even, does it matter?) of points in each direction, so that you end up with the right number of overlaps, corners, etc., or is there no "rule" and you can do any number in either direction (e.g. 4 x 4, or 4 x 5, or 4 x 6, or 5 x 5, 5 x 6, 5 x 7 and so on ?) I hope you understand my question! I can do a lot of experimenting to find out but if there is any rule one needs to follow, that's what I would like to know! Thanks so much!
@loudavisdrawing
@loudavisdrawing 3 ай бұрын
Hi! I think some experimenting is a good idea but I think that you can do any number in any direction as long as what you’re counting (4x5 etc.) is the primary grid (and not the points in the middles of the boxes). I think there is a rule for how many ‘strands’ your knot contains based on how many you start with.
@renatehaeckler9843
@renatehaeckler9843 8 ай бұрын
Do you have a formula for how many in the grid to avoid having orphaned strands that don't loop back around but get left just hanging at the edge? Or is that why you start with every other square in the grid?
@loudavisdrawing
@loudavisdrawing 8 ай бұрын
Yes, that's why I start with every other square, then fill in around them.
