There’s a lot more to hands than bones and muscles. Bones and muscles give it structure, but drawing the surface details like fat, skin, veins and nails shows the character, give hands more expression, and make your drawings look realistic. Full anatomy course at proko.com/anatomy.
I’ve poured all my experience into this hand lesson series. I’ll teach you hands in 4 parts… Part 1 explored the muscles of the hand and how to draw them. Part 2 (this lesson) teaches all the surface details, like fingernails, skin folds, and fat pads. In Part 3, I’ll show you a drawing process for drawing hands from reference or from your imagination. Part 4 is a treat: there’s 6 drawing demos, teaching you how to draw everything from relaxed poses to clenched fists. I even talk about foreshortening! In this lesson you’ll learn about how fingernails can define perspective, how skin folds can create realism and enhance the gesture, and how the fat pads can react to a hand’s movements. Want more? Sign up for the full course at proko.com/anatomy.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This free drawing lesson is a sample of the Anatomy for Artists course offered on Proko.com. The premium section has more demonstrations and extended lessons on the forms of the human body. It also has ebooks for each lesson that you can print out for review and has 3d models of bones and muscles that you can spin around, study, and draw from any angle. The premium section for the hand lesson has extra footage, including a detailed overview of the 7 hand muscles. The hands are notoriously hard to draw; get yourself a helping hand at proko.com/anatomy.

i fell in love with drawing human figure after watching your videos and how you simplify everything for better understanding and also i noticed that many videos out there like 4 or 5 hours of watching you get out with 3 or 4 min of worth info and your videos between 15 to 30 min each sec is worth watching... thx

Thanks for the mention of Steve Huston. I drew with him at least once a week from 1991 until he moved from L.A. to Montana in the early 2000s. He said the edge of the forearm lines up with the forefinger and the palm is shaped like a square Eggo waffle-- and be sure to show the thickness from which the sausage shaped fingers emerge. Boy he did great live demos in chalk on on big pieces of cream colored paper.

FYI- Those are not standard head and heart lines. The head in particular is truly unusually low. I suspect it's the hand of the artist because a line that low towards the outside of the palm is associated with a great deal of imagination. The heart is also a bit lower than usual. Often such lines are much much shorter (especially the head). Where lines start and end, whether short, choppy, chained, etc all tell the tale so to speak. Sometimes the head and heart are one, or one may dominate and take over the other. You sometimes see the head take over the heart when one has killed, whether in war or personal life. In some the heart takes over the head/mind. Neither is favorable. Some hands have few lines, others many. This includes lines that cross, make shapes of various kinds, random lines, etc. Many lines often signal a particularly stressful life and are often seen on yogi's and particularly evolved spiritual leaders...or losers. However, yes, learn some basic line placements...but they are not always associated with hand folds. And while a good fate line rises straight up the hand it can be the most difficult to find and distinguish from other lines as it's forms widely vary.

this might not be the place to ask but sir i need some help. i want to learn anatomy and figure drawing from your premium videos but how long will it take to practice the basics,i know that mastery is a life long process but i'm just talking about getting all the basics.seems like your videos will take a couple of years to digest do i really need to spend 3,4 years to get the basics.i'll be thankful for any guidance.
@masterman3349
@masterman3349 7 жыл бұрын
Ameer Umer I'm not proko, but it all depends on how much you draw. If you do once a week, it'll take a long time to get the basics. If you practice daily for at least an hour, you'll improve dramatically, likely getting the basics within a year or two. If you do nothing but draw, I'm sure you'll get them all in a few months.
