Constructing the human head starts with basic shapes. Instructor Steve Huston demonstrates how to use boxes, cylinders, and spheres to form the head's basic structure. He focuses on constructing the head in different perspectives, ensuring a solid foundation for the facial features. For more detailed areas like the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, Steve covers intermediate constructs.
Follow along as Steve illustrates how the Old Masters approached head construction. You’ll also get a timed assignment to practice these techniques and see Steve's personal approach to the exercise.

The work is obviously important, but with anything, knowing where to start and finish your work properly makes it A: better and B: easier. You can do most anything from scratch with no proper education, yes, but you will get farther faster if you know where the hell you're going and how to get there.

I expected this from my anatomy class in art school. Instead they gave us pictures and told us to copy what we saw, no information whatsoever other than "read these handouts". Not to mention the instructors didn't even show up from time to time and rescheduled lessons to be work periods. Worst waste of money ever. I really should have listened when people said no matter what you do, stay away from art school. Amazing video; informative and refreshing. Steve is a great teacher. Definitely looking into the website and the subscription library.

I went to a precollege program and it was like that, it was awful to me. Not to mention everything was very digital based so they never went through using actual tools like graphite and charcoal. :/ I also know what you mean about teachers not showing up, I went to a small art school where I waited hours at times for my instructor, his excuse was "You can work without me here you know"

yeah, you can invest a small fraction of it just attending life drawing classes, books, and buying a schoolism , nma or cgma subscription. All that money you could save for supplies, a good pc, and life expenses. Only a few institutes give good teaching in the west , most are scams

That's because talented people will cement their own techniques. If you look at the world's best artists, they didn't learn technique from others as much as they learned from their own mind. Instead, this class here is to teach those who lack talent and need to learn technique

I like that he's actually using himself as examples. A lot of teaching videos explain and show everything but never give you real examples. Me personally, I learn by seeing. I'm horrible at learning from just explaining or just drawing. I need to see a real world equivilent of what's being tought to really understand. Also, "We are our own best models." only works if you're not overweight. At least as far as drawing bones and muscles goes.

That's really important. Nowadays people say that "all is art" and forget to improve their techniques. The true and beautiful form of drawing is fading. But whatever is your drawing style, you need to know many drawing techniques ans styles and develop your own. Otherwise you can't be called "master". Thank you, mr. Huston. That's a great video.

I think more people are trying to "master" art now then ever before beacuse of the internet. Most folks who want to learn to draw want to draw realistic humans or atleast learn it so they can draw in other artsyle (like manga).

You have one video out of hundreds that they have in their collection, if you want access to all their videos you have to pay the same amount as average tuition costs for an art institute. So no, you don't have the internet to tell you the same core art praxes as an online school or actual school does. The internet is GREAT for some things, you can get by without going to school very easily, but to get an edge you'll likely need to pay for the real deal.

yeah, I know what you mean. I am more of a TAB skimmer, though. I close tabs all the time and use the procrastination to weed out less important topics. when something is really important it will come back at some other point, even if I already closed the tab and forgotten all about it. my history will help me find it again. there is more of a system to my madness than just waiting to waste time :D in this instance I closed all the other tabs once this video turned out to be what I was looking for.

This man has taught me more in half an hour than I ever thought possible, and it’s already made a significant change in my understanding of how to draw the human head.I’ll be finishing this course as well as checking out all his other videos. This is pure gold. I actually took notes with diagrams, and did all of the drawing exercises. A master class from someone like Steve Huston would be costly and hard to find at a local university, yet it's on here for free. I can only assume that the folks who gave it a thumbs down are either living masters who are sure they could give a better lesson (sarcasm here), or are more impatient than they are serious about their own drawing skills.

Thank you so much! I’m 14 and trying to learn art, I didn’t know where to start and you have no idea how much this helps, when I was younger I had no idea where to start or what to do! I was always following the wrong sources and I gave up so many times, and felt discouraged, I was at the verge of giving up art completely because anatomy annoyed me, I was thinking of starting to get serious again and failed to find the right recourses! This explains so much! I fully understand and I’m very grateful! This is so helpful years of not understanding and this helped god bless

I recently subscribed to NMA, I have been going through the teachings of Steve Huston and Bill Perkins, both of them are amazing, the composition classes by bill Perkins are like really good, and Steve Huston explains everything not to quote him but in a "simple yet characteristic" manner that you actually remember it, but more importantly you understand it. People generally think art is a god given talent, partially it can be true but the bigger part of art is to understand it, knowing where you go wrong and how to correct it, is a bigger much better part of art. I have learned a lot from these two instructors, and I am hoping that I will learn much much more in the future. Thank you!

Thanks for the upload! It's the most detailed and understandable art lesson I've found online so far. Each section of this tutorial was well timed, traceable and fully explained. I scoured your website. If all the learning content is so comprehensive and tangible, it's a treasure chest for all artists. Unfortunately I can not afford that despite good price-performance ratio. Keep up the good work!
