Your tutorials are tantamount to taking a course in college or anywhere else where one would be dropping a few hundred dollars. I really appreciate not just your keen and fluid abilities at drawing, but your clarity in speech and innate gift at teaching. In other words: You are awesome and Thank You so much for the art tutorials! :)

I'm very impressed. As many people already said, you're a great teacher, Alphonso. Most artists show off in their tutorials, they rather draw the way not to look bad, hiding all inconvenient "stages". And you actually explain things, you make tutorials for people, not for your ego, and that's awesome. I wanted to ask about the boxes and cylinders. It sounds good but on practice I'm not sure what goes first. It feels like these boxes come out of the understanding of proportions, shapes and lighting, not forming it. And mostly they mislead by a wrong shape as a body still has many complicated bents... I mean it looks good in your example because you know how to see past it, right? So did you always use them or did you start once you had a strong base? Do they still help you? And most importantly, isn't it better to go for the shapes I actually see there, not as simplified but teaching me to work with the difficult shapes from the very start? Thanks in advance, I'll keep watching your vids. ^__^

Thanks for the post and for that excellent question...I advise starting with basic simple forms at all times for a looonnng time. And this is not only for the sake of simplifying what you see but it also indirectly enables you to sense the mass, volume, structure and proportion of objects you draw. Its just one of those things you have to experience but you have to be patient enough to let it work. I have had students who would be quick to draw things just as they saw it yet found it difficult to draw cubes, cylinders and spheres...why is that? They didnt practice enough with start their drawings with the basics first. It is so simple it is overlooked. I still do it Plus it enables you to draw from the imagination with so much more ease :-) I have a tutorial coming up with drawing complex forms with major and minor planes that will address this as well..stay tuned

Thanks Alphonso! I'm learning to teach drawing and your tutorial has helped me break down what I do naturally but have forgotten the process I now do without too much thought. I've discovered that learning to draw is like learning to drive. There's the car stuff (pedals, gears, wipers etc) that's your equipment - be it whatever - pencil, paper, eraser etc. Then there's the head stuff........shape, form, perspective, hazard perception, traffic lights, basically where you are in relation to the world around you and what your intentions are. (and everyone else's to--boot). Then after a shed load of experience (more than what the average learner believes). You find yourself putting it all together naturally. With a bit of luck bad habits haven't crept in and you are still open to the learning experience. Again, thanks for breaking down the process into understandable and bite size pieces.

I like how you old videos can still give valuable knowledge. In this series so far, i've started to keep to your egg torso more, and try to be more loose with gestures and attempt to be less flustered with my gesture poses and simple foreshortening. I've even learned that my drawing process starts with the sketch first then overlaps 2 and 3 in the second step. So I measure and add form once i know the measures in my art. I am a bit too perfectionist when it comes to my sketches since I want to be able to draw a body with few lines as possible and essentially feel bad when I have to build my pose I can't freehand with a frame. But these videos are slowly but surely helping me feel less frustration when just sketching something to start a drawing.

This is one of the best videos I have seen. It explains how a tree that I drew yesterday, which looked good when I started out, but which became successively 'robotic' (as Alphonso warns in this video) as I started to 'refine' it. I ended up scrapping the drawing and becoming discouraged. I now feel (after listening and watching Alphonso) that I understand the reason for my failure and I can go back to my tree and try again. Thank you, Alphonso.

Thanks, currently studying the human figure and it's harder than anything. While I already naturally do some of this it still provides some good insight and little things I neglect.

I can't even tell you how much I am improving by watching this series. You really have built my confidence, let alone my sketching skills! I have to pass an exam which includes sketching to get into college, and I am sure that your videos are going to get me through. I have my exam in January next year and I will tell you how I perform; but until then, I am going to practice these techniques and challenge myself to do better, not only to pass the exam, but to become a great designer. Thank you, Alphonso. Love from India!

The progression is so inspiring! Thank you so much! It reminds me of an idiom: At first, you look at the mountain and the river, you see the mountain and the river. Then after ten years, mountains are no longer mountains, and rivers are no longer rivers. Another ten years pass by, and you see mountains still as mountains, and rivers still as rivers.
