I most like that you are so through and deliberate and mention alternative tools that can be used for us guys that are just starting out and don't have access to all the tools of the trade. Thanks for sharing!

It's always good to see how other people do things. It makes you evaluate your own process and you can usually pick up a thing or two. I started drilling in the last year and I'm always looking for more ideas. Thank you, JR.

JR thanks for this type of video. I've been drilling for about 10 yrs but am always trying to learn new snd better ways. I picked up a couple of things from this video that should help. My biggest problem i have is the press is 100% manual. So the pitches and distances sometimes off a 16th-32nd. But keep this type of video because we can continue to learn. Thanks

I work for Lisa Bishop over here in Westland so I'm going to learn how to drill my own stuff and how to drill for other people. I like working in the shop because it doesnt feel like work. That and stuff is a lot cheaper. I understand how to draw out a layout with dual angles but havent done vector yet (not sure I will) and I'm also learning how to verify a ball's static weights.

Thank you for the video JR! I have been wanting to learn how to drill a ball and pro shops are very "hush" on this... Out of curiosity: Is there more than one way to do vacu grips? The pro shop I usually get my stuff drilled at places a plastic ring in the bottom of the finger hole and then glues the grip into that ring on the bottom as well as gluing the grip near the top. From what I see in your video, it seems like this is almost just a shortcut to avoid drilling the hole two different sizes??

I just started bowling, so I'm new to all these concepts. My most recent ball I had drilled, they drilled directly into the pin. I thought it was strange. What does that mean? Is that a good thing, or a mistake by the pro shop?

Can you explain about static weight? Does topweight or certain cores effect the layout you can put on a ball? What do you do to combat having too much static weight? Do you vary the depth of the finger and thumbholes?
@donkeydiehard879

You can just run 1 3/8" bit in the outter before you move the jig. It cleans up the outter perfectly as long as the mill doesn't have run out. A lot cheaper than the reamer bit.

Thanks! I've been drilling my own stuff for about 2 years, and getting some online help when I started proved challenging. You covered several key bases that should help most folks out. One thing I'd point out for new guys (unless I missed it) is you seemed to skip over your vacu-grip finger drilling. Really important to drill the larger hole @ layout, and then immediately drill the 31/32 without moving the ball, to depth. If you drill the big holes for both 1st, then try to recenter for the 31/32, it can be frustrating. Just a supplement, not a critique!

How did you get started drilling your own stuff? I would really like to because the places around me aren't great and don't use modern layouts they just place the pin above or below the bridge.

Hi JR how would you go about drilling your own equipment as someone who doesn't work in a proshop? I don't necessarily want to work in a proshop but none of the ones around me use any kind of layout system or look for bowlers PAP and I want to be able to help friends and family out by drilling their equipment better.

I've been drilling my own equipment for about a year now. I have drill press from Home Depot. I had to figure out how get the pitches in the ball VERY manually! lol I've gotten pretty good at it and they're all comfortable, although a little different. I don't have a way to lock the ball in solidly enough to use a plug cutter, but it's fine for just drilling. Within two months, I'll have a Jayhawk rig that will allow me to start putting in slugs and Switch Grips. Looking forward to help my students by also drilling their equipment. For an upcoming video, can you discuss how to determine the best pitches for a particular hand? This one is great, thank you!

Silly question, but when you move the jig to change the pitches, doesn't that also change the span as well? Is there a mathematical equation you use to tell you something like "If I go 1/4" left and 1/8" forward on my finger, then I need to lengthen/shorten my span XXX amount?"

I know this is an old video but can you go more in depth about how to adjust depth if it is different. I moved and went to a different pso and he had absolutely no issue getting depth properly adjusted. Now that pso shut down shop. I went to a new pso and he can not get depth proper to save his life. Would you just use a dial caliper and measure the inside of an already installed outer, and then add the width of the plastic at the bottom?

Great video JR! I’ve been teaching myself to drill my own balls for a few months now. I was wondering if you based your finger pitches off the main center line or created a new one following the angle your fingers go into the ball? I have been drilling my thumb and fingers using totally different center lines.

After watching this, things make much mor sense to me. A few years ago I had my first two reactive balls drilled by a guy who didn't seem to have much experience. I didn't know any different at the time, but always knew the fit and measurement wasn't quite right. I've always dealt with it and thought it was me who needed to make adjustments with swing or approach to become better with the ball. Now, I understand that my fitment is totally screwed up and it's not necessarily me that needs to make adjustments. Now that I'm beginning to get more serious with the sport I want to get a few new balls drilled the right way. How do I find a shop pro I can trust to do it right next time?

What does a 1 inch reverse pitch do, does it make you have more revs or is it a comfort thing?
@andrewinvests839
@andrewinvests839 4 жыл бұрын
Reverse points away from the palm so it helps you get out of the ball faster. It can help with revs but not always. It can also help with comfort.

What is your opinion on 3/8 left and 3/8 right in the fingers vs 0 in the middle and 3/4 right in the ring for a righty.. (or 1/8 left and 5/8 right) . Is there any difference in ball roll or track location?
@TheGeetarJoe
@TheGeetarJoe 4 жыл бұрын
Finger and thumb pitches all work together as a system. If the lateral pitches of the fingers are both moved the same amount they will have minimal effect on the track of the ball. They will however effect how your palm sits on the ball and how it feels in your hand especially if combined with thumb pitches that are not complimentary. Lineal pitches have more effect on the track when it comes to the fingertips.

Because if you miss your line on the thumb, you will still have the correct span. Drill the thumb first, then measure the span from the front edge of the thumb.
