This is a very common problem. You decide to change the brake rotors (incidentally, worn brake rotors are a new type of failure under new rule for MOT testing) , and they end up being stuck because the two screws have rusted themselves on. What to do?

Spent ages on my bmw trying to do this and gave up after removing the heads enough to get the disc off I'll get some cobolt bits and try again.Good video best in depth explanation I've seen.

If you start with using a small drill bit then gradually increase size this will be a lot easier than starting with one large drill bit. Also use left handed drill bits and a bit of heat and the bolt(s) will likely come out. If they won't then drill out the head, use a centring drill bit to locate the next drill bit dead centre on the remaining bolt then drill out with a left handed drill bit.

I agree with the left hand drill bit, but I think starting with a small drill bit on a smooth surface is a good idea, not on the head of a screw. The indents will catch the small bit and break it off. I use colbalt bits, so being expensive, I try not to break them.

I put two M8 bolts on the removal holes and wound them in with a ratchet, it cracked the threads on the stuck screws.

Brake disc retaining screws are like a broken pencil...Pointless. They are about as convenient as locking wheel nuts... another stupid idea. Where do people leave the wheel nut adaptor (assuming they haven't lost it)?? Yes, in the car.

I used a die grinder on a Honda earlier today. Wasn't too bad of a job, I actually broke my impact screwdriver bit on one of them...

You should be using a lot more frequent squirts of that cutting oil because after a few seconds it is dried up.

What if you mess up the thread? What tool would u use to make a new one?
@EducationPineapple
@EducationPineapple 5 жыл бұрын
Good question. I have always found that drilling it out with a smaller than the stuck bolt's thread diameter, the bolt will tend to give up before you get near the thread and just become loose. When drilling out something critical (see my video where a bolt snapped in the side of the engine cam belt cover), go for a much smaller drill bit but get ready with a screw remover that bites when rotating anticlockwise. Other options include heat/ banging it/ rotating the part and not the screw or bolt. I'll have those options ready also. If you do mess up the thread, use a tap and die tool set to clean out the thread. Worse case and it doesn't matter on a rotar just leave it without a bolt at all.

you should use the bolt extractor tip with your drill in reverse. You would be done in a minute instead of 12.

Using an impact driver made for taking off 14mm plus bolts and not screws, will round off any resemblance of a screw-end in a single burst. Absolutely not recommended. Try it yourself if you want to experiment, but make sure it's on something you don't need.
