Hip hop DJing has a distinct sound when compared to other styles like house or techno. Besides the obvious scratching and turntablism techniques commonly associated with hip hop DJs, the dropmix is a signature technique that DJs should be familiar with.
Even if you are not a hip hop DJ, the dropmix technique can be useful with many different styles of DJing. So let's go over two different ways to execute the dropmix to try for yourself, regardless of what genre you play.

Beginner DJ here. I like the echo out drop mix technique a lot. Especially for songs where beatphrase mixing is harder due to drastic tempo differences. In this case I find I like to find a LITERAL phrase in the song to try to match up with a literal phrase of the next song. My very first club gig I did this with the songs Yeah by Usher and Ms New Booty by Bubba Sparx... right as Ludacris says his fourth and last "Lil Jon got the beat that make ya booty go." On the fly I echoed out right at "booty" and dropped the "booty booty booty rockin every where" and then right into the first chorus. The crowd went bananas! Ive only had my dj controller for a month and just did my first 2 club gigs (friday and saturday). I have to say I learned quite a bit from you and DJ Atendido. It really helped me not look like a total noob. Also helps that I rapped live for 5 years and DJ/hosted my own karaoke nights. Other beginner DJs may consider doing some of these smaller but outgoing jobs to get their feet wet before trying to DJ for clubs and parties. Its nerve racking. But once I got going I realized my experiences prepared me for this. And my first two nights were a BLAST! thank you for all the awesome tips and advice!!!

Dropmixing hip hop/r&b is so much cleaner than beatmixing them, IMHO. I also prefer dropping on the four.

If there is a "pick up" in the tune you're dropping in then dropping on other beats can work well :)

DJ Phat Joe from SA mixes like this. From the four is good. scratch sounds fresher on a snare than on a kick. that last count gives you a chance to switch sides and fx. the scratch or the buttons, you should do in ear for a few counts before the moment, to be on point with the timing when you drop. otherwise too relaxed might happen and the slide of a fraction of a beat.

Still very much a beginner DJ. But I have definitely found the dropmix to be the most useful at my club gig. Whether I echo out or just slam to the next song i have already hotten many oohs and ahhs lol. (Im a fast learner). But of course as the dj I find it more fun when I do have to songs matched perfectly and I do the 8 bar mix over the chorus of track one and the intro of track two. Mixing is a little harder to get the crowd to ooh and ahh or go nuts as sometimes it goes un noticed. It gets really good when you can slowly bring in that banger that they now know is coming if i am coming out of a smooth but up tempo song right into a bopper, if I am able to bring it in through mix, I definitely do. I find drop mixing is also good for going from a fairly uptempo jam to something slow and sexy but still club worthy (think Nice & Slow or Pony) i find trying to mix these tracks...while effective, has a way of making the clubbers less excited about the throwback. Sometimes I will go from a newer uptempo hip hop track and do a spin back transition and drop a sexy throwback song after a sequence of uptempo music to give the crowd a break but not lose their attention.

If you arent dropping the new track at the very start of a song (which you may not want if it has lower energy) you can also have your tracks lined up (phrase matched) and playing making this much easier.

Great tutorial, but it would have been better without talking over the examples. Usually you guys explain, and then show how it's done. Talking while showing prevents us from listening to the transition properly. Just sharing my 2 cents, keep up the good work!

Can you drop on the four using tracks that have different tempos?

You can but use your ears, if they are too far apart in tempo you'll notice it even across one beat
