How to Dye a Silk Scarf - The Easy Microwave Way!

Dye a silk scarf - Easy microwave directions - This is a demonstration film I made for a class at Foothill College using Premiere Pro - GID80.
Learn how to dye a silk scarf using the microwave. It's a really fun group project for kids and adults, too. If you are just starting out buy some inexpensive Habotai scarves from www.thaisilks.com. If you like the results progress to luxurious charmeuse or my favorite - Crepe de Chine. When you are ready to go wholesale you can buy from www.exoticsilks.com. Enjoy!
You can buy the dyes from www.dickblick.com, or your local art store. All kinds of wonderful artist's supplies. I could go crazy here!
You can also buy dyed Habotai and iridescent chiffon scarves on Amazon

The music is from Garageband which states:
"GarageBand Software. You may use the Apple and third party audio loop content (Audio Content), contained in or otherwise included with the Apple Software, on a royalty-free basis, to create your own original music compositions or audio projects. You may broadcast and/or distribute your own music compositions or audio projects that were created using the Audio Content, however, individual audio loops may not be commercially or otherwise distributed on a standalone basis, nor may they be repackaged in whole or in part as audio samples, sound effects or music beds."
So don't worry, you can make commercial music with GarageBand, you just can't distribute the loops as loops.

Fun to watch. Makes me think I can actually do this. Thank you for telling us where to buy the scarves and the dye. Only criticism, either lose the jazz music or speak a little louder. The music was just a tad too high to hear you clearly. And jazz just rattles the nerves ;)

Thank you Dianne! I know about the music track. This was a class learning project I did 3 or 4 years ago. Because it has gotten so many views if I redid it I would have to start at zero. So I am leaving it as is. Anyhow, yes you can do it! It is so easy and fun. If you need any help let me know.

Wow, that does look easy! I actually have all items on hand, I may try it! I had trouble hearing...did you say to micro 4 minutes? I also felt the finished scarves at the end went by too fast--we wanted to see the finished, dried, ironed, gorgeous results! If you ever get the urge to repost, leave out the music during the demo, but crank it up at then end as the ladies model more slowly so we can see them. Other than that, great video, thank you!

Normal. I rarely mess with the power level settings.

If use food coloring, will the color come out after washing it when it gets dirt? thanks

The microwave process sets the dye permanently. The color will not come out.

This was very useful and seemed simple enough so I decided to try it out. But when I put it in the microwave my paper towel caught on fire and I am not sure what I did wrong?

I agree the music in the demonstration could be toned down a bit. But that would mean reposting. Nah. The ending music is fine as far as I am concerned. I am not sure what you mean by the finished scarves going by too fast. There's plenty of visuals showing the scarves. Yes, the vinegar and microwave set the dyes and ironing gets the wrinkles out.

Great video, very helpful and easy to understand. Two questions please. 1. Can you take a peek in your microwave and let me know the wattage it is. It should be on a label inside or even on the outside. That way if my microwave is more or less powerful I could adjust the time 2. I have seen some folks using this techniques and they have added salt to give the scarf an organic appearance. I have used salt when painting silk dyes on a stretched piece and love it. But not sure when in the process you would add salt to a microwave piece, after the dyes, in the microwave, when? What do you think? Thanks for taking the time to create and post the video! 1.58 kw? I don't know how salt would work. It might burn? You would have to experiment with a small piece I guess. Thank you for watching. This video is so old, but the technique hasn't changed.

Thank you. I am not sure where to find that info. There is a label, but I don't see actual wattage or maybe I don't know how to read the wattage. Just use your default power level and 4 minutes. Experiment.

You remove the salt after the scarf drys... just brush it off with your hands... easily done.

Thanks Klutzy68 - Yes microwave 4 minutes. It's easy and fun and exciting. I know I need to redo this cause I've found some better techniques. I originally did this for a class in web video. I thought the scarves were shown pretty well at the end during the credits. Any other suggestions are much appreciated.

Not sure what I said, but not soap dyes - silk dyes or fabric dyes work. Food coloring also works.

I found the music very distracting, and the finished scares at the end go by too fast to see them well. Otherwise the instruction part was very well done. If I understood it correctly, the vinegar and microwaving were to set the dyes, and the ironing at the end is just to get the scarf nice and flat?

The time is 4 minutes. I used the default setting on my microwave.

Nice fashion show but the models were hiding the scarves by tieing them and twirling them would like to see the result more clearly.You said you would show us where to get the scarves and supples.In the links maybe? Thank you for your exposee.

I like the video, (have watched it a couple times), but personally for me, it would be better without the music. Maybe a softer, mellower instrumental, or nothing at all. Just a personal preference.

Yeah. I have gotten that comment before. I am not going to fix it. I can hear the instructions perfectly well. There's always a critic. If you are interested in doing this procedure just go with the flow.

Don’t use your kitchen microwave. Use an old one as the dyes can be poisonous

I want to watch your video... but the loud music will make it difficult. Why use it? Your voice is fine, but the music is annoying. Only 4:56 so maybe I'll try again to listen to it. Otherwise I will just watch the video.

Just watch it. The music isn't that loud. This was a film I did for a video class and we had to incorporate many elements.

This is true. It is an old video, which I am not going to redo. The instructions are still valid. Thai Silks is still in operation, just moved locations. Google it if you are interested.
