Dying drop cloth to make curtains is super easy and inexpensive. All you need is dye, hot water, and salt to create a beautiful color on the drop cloth.

Hi everyone! I realized, after many of the questions, that some of the instructions were a little confusing. I have more detailed instructions on the blog post: www.farmhouseonboone.com/farmhouse-on-boone/how-to-dye-and-sew-drop-cloth-curtains/ Hope that helps!

I like to find flat king size sheets that have a wonderful pattern or a great solid color. At the top of the sheet I just run an extra seam. It leaves it with a small ruffle at the top when threaded on a curtain rod. My windows are 80" long and king size sheets work great for the right length! I also buy a set of matching pillow cases to make throw pillow covers and tie backs for the curtains. Because the sheets are often on sale I am able to change my look cheaper and faster than buying yardage at a fabric store. But, I have to admit, having a daughter who works for Joann's is a bonus!

This is such a great inexpensive way to get full length curtains. I have the older traditional ceiling to floor windows in some of my rooms and its always so expensive to find curtains from ceiling to floor length so this is great to know. I am definitely headed over to Amazon to get those drop cloths. Great video. Tfs

Ha, I’m not sure if you have a Calico Corners in your area ( it’s a fabric/decorating store) but if you do, they’d be green of envy. A project like yours would cost at least $800 with them. Good job, no frills, just something nice and functional.

I have forgotten to ask this - did you update the electrical in this house or was it already updated? I'm asking because we have a 1923 Tudor and it was the first thing we did before we moved in. My biggest fear when I looked at the wiring (which previously had an "octopus" of wires leading to a fuse box) was a fire.

Okay. I tried this and my drop cloth frayed like CRAZY during the dye "wash" cycle...which ironically, my husband told me would happen. Lol!! I bought your suggested canvas from Amazon this time, and will try again. Should I not cut it before dyeing? It is 9x12. Thanks!
@valkyriesardo278
@valkyriesardo278 4 жыл бұрын
CSS Chicago Canvas & Supply sells dropcloth on Amazon. You can also purchase directly from the CSS website where they offer dropcloth in a variety of colors. They are aware their cloth is popular for curtains and crafting. No matter where you buy, for best dying results check fabric content for 100% cotton. The blue denim look is perfect for a farmhouse mudroom. And even if the dye job is not perfectly even, that only adds charm to a "blue jeans" curtain.

Do you do anything after youre done dying them in the washing machine? Like an empty rinse cycle or add detergent and do a full cycle to make sure their isnt any residue or is it not an issue? Do you think different water would have different effects yours looks very clear and soft we have hard water here (limescale etc) or bore water which is hot springs water so i was just wondering if you think that might effect the process at all?
@FarmhouseonBoone
@FarmhouseonBoone 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't do anything special to clean out the washer, and it doesn't seem to have affected anything. We've done plenty of loads since then! I'm not sure about the different types of water.
@raraavis7782
@raraavis7782 5 жыл бұрын
EmmaAppleBerry Once the dying process is done, you don’t need to worry about residue in the machine. But I would always wash the items another time right after dying, if it’s clothes...just to be on the safe side with these chemicals. You don’t need to worry about accidentally getting dye on your next load though. As for hard water...the instructions on the dye will tell you, if you need to add extra salt or something like that. Just make sure, to check right when you buy the stuff, so you don’t get caught short!

Laurie Hamerlynck just like salt helps set the dye, if you buy fabric rich in color or a dress with navy blue and white stripes, you can add vinegar to the wash to set the colors so they won't fade and the blue won't run into the white

Plastic tub or stove method is fine for small stuff but you wouldn’t want to deal with all that fabric and stirring constantly and wringing it out would be a nightmare. Washer method comes out with more even color. I also start the washer and add the fabric as it adgitates so there is no blotchyness. I use it all the time and just run a cycle of warm water with some bleach at the end when you are done to make sure all color is out of the washer for when you do your regular laundry.
