Good video. In the cooling pot you should have a cup to a cup and a half of vinegar added. The vinegar acts as a color lock to speed up and set the color and prevent color bleeding. You also do this when dying fabrics.

Those are not dust caps. I found out a while back that if you watch closely when you're snapping one on to the mag, it PUSHES the rounds down in the mag and relieves pressure on the feed lips. After I figured that out I use them all the time, especially for long term storage.

Amen! Funny how those gun counter experts went from you have to download your mags for the reliability of feeding and feed lips stress, to a gospel that the MAGPUL cover that relieves stress on the plastic magazines are some how not necessary. Which are more likely to weaken over time, unlike metal, due to the polymer plastic changes in the brittleness from aging. Along with the harm from UV A UV B , etc sunlight exposure also harming them unlike metal mags..... If they did nothing, Magpul wouldn't include them......

@@edward1330773 Had my PMAG's stored fully loaded long term in the back of my car. 3 years at least inside the plate carrier. No covers on them. Other polymer mags failed and spread the feed lips. The Magpul ones were the only that didn't have trouble with rounds popping out, feeding in or out of the magwell. They are good to go in hot weather at least.

These came out nice. This gives me flash backs to my buddy dying fishing rod guides for a custom wrapped black and pink rod he was making me. The old Fuji salt water guides had a glow green color ring in them that you could dye. His Mom had finally had a new vinyl floor installed in the kitchen literally the day before. She had wanted a new floor for years. He splashed a big load of pink dye water from the hot pot onto the brand new floor. That floor had a big pink spot on it for the next 10 years or so. His mom had a neat new floor for ONE DAY. Best to do this type of job outside on a camp stove or burner over dirt.

I tried this with some other fabric dye and it completely failed to stick to the plastic. I finally got some actual Rit dye and it worked like magic. It's much thicker than what I had used previously and it dyed my pmag a very deep, dark blue, just as I had imagined it should. I wish I could post a picture of it.

Great video. I did this method on sand AK magazines, but still found that if you don't use Vinegar then you have to let them cool down and dry them out, but you still have dye coming off of them. I let them air dry then took a scouring pad and some dish washing soap and scrubbed them down and rinsed them off several time until the excess dye did not come off either on the scouring pad or a paper napkin. I also found that the dye is absorbed fastest on the side closest to the flame so as you mentioned turning it every few minutes does help in the process as well as to check to see the desired results.

Great video and looks great. Always make sure to wash with cold water and dishwashing soap and a scouring pad to remove any excess dye which did not adhere to the mags and to avoid staining your hands or other items. I did these on the AK Sand mags and got a similar finish to bakelite or Russian Red, but had to rise them several times with the method described to remove any excess. Used Scarlet Red and Cherry Red.

Hey Bob... great inspirational video! So my gun store guy promised me he could get sand colored mags. 2 months later, they arrive... and they're actually brown, or medium coyote tan. Ugh. Plus, I'm in California, so my options to score 30 round "standard" magazines are a bit narrow. I ended up buying a loaf / bread pan from the dollar store for...$1. I boiled some water, let it cool to 190, and poured the water into the loaf pan. Added a splash (about 2 tablespoons?) of royal purple dye. Thought I'd do one and see how it turned out. Deep, deep dark purple, of course! I put the loaf pan carefully on the stove, reheated the dye water, gave it a stir with a plastic spoon, and did all 6 mags. My cooling pan was an aluminum cake pan, also from the dollar store, 2 for a buck. Added about ¼ cup white vinegar. Wish I could score some proper sand colored mags!

Purple is one of my least favorite colors, but when you started pulling those small parts out of the dye they looked good. Really good. I was surprised they got that dark without using more dye. You could just brush the dye on like paint but it would be uneven and look bad. A few drops of dye on a Q-tip would probably cover deep scratches almost instantly. If you try it you might want to mask off the surrounding area with tape so you don't make a big dark spot.

I dyed some Tango Down FDE mag bases to black. First go round with 1/2 boiling water & 1/2 Rit liquid black dye produced pieces looking like OD green. This was after 30 minutes and occasional stirring. Second go round was with the remaining full strength black dye, using a microwave to heat the dye, repeating the cycle several times over nearly two hours. They finally came out black. Conclusion is that the density/hardness of the polymer affects how quickly and deeply the piece takes the full color of the dye. Mag bases can lead a tough life, so I suspect these pieces were relatively hard.

@@Tecknut75 You can't dye a dark color lighter. You can only go from lighter to darker as it adds more color to what's already there. It doesn't remove any of the existing color, or coat it like paint does. I hope that helps. I don't own any PMags but I have dyed clothes with Rit dye, including tie-dyeing a few T-shirts. I always used the Rit dye powder, which I think is still available and cheaper than the liquid, but it's been several years since I bought any. I used to dye my shirts and jeans, and rinse them, all in the washing machine, then wash the machine out by running a cycle with detergent. Smaller items I dyed in a galvanized steel bucket that could handle the heat of boiling water.

Coming from a foodie perspective, a sous vide immersion circulator would work beautifully for this. Of course you would need a dedicated unit that is never used for food, but essentially what it is is a device that is immersed partially in your container of water and has a heating element and impeller to circulate the water and hold it at a constant, uniform temperature. Combine this with some kind of hangers to suspend the parts in the pot, and you have the perfect setup for dyeing polymer parts. No stirring or turning required.
@venus_de_lmao
@venus_de_lmao Жыл бұрын
Even better, since the immersion circulator plugs into the wall, you're not taking up half your stove: you can do it in any container large enough to hold the right amount of water - a 5 gallon bucket from the hardware store, an old stainless pot you have no other use for, a Rubbermaid tub - as long as you don't care if it gets stained. Since you're not using it for food, you can get a really basic IC for like $60 and not worry about fancy features like WiFi or built-in recipes -all you need is something that can hold a temperature setting and circulate water.
