No such thing as nipple confusion, only nipple preference! Ways to avoid it is always having the slowest flow nipple on the bottle, and pace-feeding (making baby take 15-20 minutes to eat bottle so that they are working for their milk, similar to boob) when babies drink a bottle of milk within 5 minutes, they have learned it’s easier and prefer it over breast, where they have to work! Also just want to mention for any new mommas that when your baby is born, your milk isn’t automatically in. It will come in 2-5 days after birth, because it is triggered by placenta detaching. You had a lot of great info! Always love seeing your videos Lex!

This is what worked for me exactly because my baby didn't want my breast until I used that trick now she takes both. I'm a first time mom so I felt so accomplished when I saw her latching again

Same here. Baby was preferring the bottle instead of the boob even tho we used preemie nipples (Avent). It was only when we switched over to Ultra Preemie (Dr Brown's) that he now takes both!

What I did for sore nipples is just express a little bit of milk and rub it around on the sore areas of the nipple, and let it air dry. It helped me so much.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! Not for me, but for so many new mamas I’ve sent this way. I unfortunately couldn’t nurse, but I exclusively pump and have a huge stash. Whenever someone asks how I build my stash, they usually are nursing and not exclusively pumping so I send them this video and they love it! Your mentioning of tongue/lip ties saved my friends breastfeeding journey. She was having such a hard time, But after I sent her this video and she found out her son had a tongue AND lip tie and that’s why her supply was plummeting. They got it revised and she pumped the way you recommended and built her stash up to 800 oz and has been able to donate to other babies :) I love your videos, but this is by far my fave!

Thanks for this! I feel like we speak the same language. You are an experienced breastfeeding mom and it feels based on the advice you give. I am manual pump all the way!!! I used the spectra s2 after going back to work at 8 weeks and I always had a manual pump as a back up until the day my power cord broke and I never looked back to my electric pump (until I had a clogged duct but that’s a different story). Once you understand how to get your let down, the milk just flows and you can pump for the same time or sometimes less time!! God send!!! The experience of breastfeeding is so amazing that I just don’t want to give it up (my son is now 12 months and we are still going, however he only nurses twice a day now). Any reason you stopped at 12 months with your first and what is your goal for your second. Also, I am all for having some breastmilk stored (it eased my anxiety when my milk supply took a slight hit at 10 months and I was afraid I wasn’t going to make it to a year); but I’m pretty sure you know you are establishing an oversupply but sometimes that's what it takes just to get the stash you need and for piece of mind. Thanks for this video!! It is based on experience and that is the best advice. I would add as advice to first time moms is to TAKE A Breastfeeding class and read a book!!!

I’m a labor and delivery nurse and now a new mom. Your video is very realistic and relatable. All that you spoke of is what I’m experiencing especially the part where we have her a bottle from day one since she was underweight. Now she prefers breastfeeding but my husband does feed her a bottle (Como tomo-breast like nipple the most )

TY so much for mentioning the resentment. It is something that isn't thought of a lot but happens so often. I remember being almost hateful to my husband because he could sleep while I had to keep getting up to either nurse or pump. Even if he gave my daughter a bottle, I still had to pump to keep supply up. It is important to remember that these times pass as cliche as that sounds.

My husband will be getting up every time I have to. Either to change the baby, hand me the baby to nurse, or bring me pumping supplies, etc. I will not be dealing with this. He's the one who wanted kids, so he will be losing every bit of sleep I lose.

Hi! I usually don’t comment on videos, but this subject is so close to my heart! I wish I watched this earlier, it’s so comforting and empowering! I’m a new mom and in my case nothing went as planned. Wanted to give birth at home, ended up in hospital, wanted to breastfeed for as long as possible and managed only for 3 months. My son is 10 months old now and I’m still trying to get my milk back ( had my ups and downs with pumping, my son preferred bottle over boob, my family and husband were not supportive at all ). I’m still using Medela sns system feeding my son with formula but he is drinking less as he gest older and he recently stopped waking up at night for feeding. My milk production decreased almost to zero. I can’t let go the wish for coming back to breastfeeding though. I know this seems crazy but I finally have more time now to focus on pumping and I also feel better physically and emotionally first time from delivery, and I really want to try again, this last time. My plan is to pump every two hours during a day and at least one time at night. I would love some advices or maybe somebody had similar story and succeeded? Thank you!

I just found your video and I'm so glad that I did! I'm a mother of 2 as well ( a 2 yr old boy and 7 month old girl) and your video by far is one of my favorite breastfeeding videos! You hit the nail on the head with your tips and advice. My first time around I wasn't as confident in myself and as a first time mom it didn't help that some of those closest to me (aka my parents) had been so negative when it came to me breastfeeding that my journey ended very early on. However, I was determined to find a way to provide him with breast milk so I ended up exclusively pumping until he was 8 months old. Now with my daughter I was also extremely determined to directly nurse her for as long as I possibly could and after 7 months, I'm still going strong!!! WOOHOO LOL!!! Strangely enough I had the same EXACT experience when it came to pumping. I had the spectra and the medela electric pumps and ended up primarily using the spectra (i loved this pump) with my son. This time around I've only really used the medela harmony manual pump and I LOVE this thing! A very close friend of mine suggested I use it and I'm so glad I did =) Once again thanks so much for your video and you most definitely have a new subscriber in me =) CONGRATULATIONS on your bundle of joy as well!!!

Nicole G she gives great advice. I was terrified that I wasn’t going to be able to breastfeed because you hear so many failed stories and I am a working mom. My advice is to educate yourself (take a class at your hospital) and SUPPORT (find someone who has breastfeed for longer than your goal and they will keep you going). Good luck!

Wow this was such a great video! I wish I had watched it before. I am currently 6 weeks post postpartum and you mentioned all my struggles, being the only one that can feed and the tongue tie/inability to latch were the hardest for me! I was researching the Haakaa which is how I found your video. I was looking for techniques on how to use. I was also debating purchasing the manual Medela pump. I will now be buying it too! I also find that hate pumping with my electric pump!! Also I’ve been doing the one breast feed too because my baby can only eat that much! I was worried about not emptying both at each feeding but your technique is perfect I am going to try! Thank you!! 🙌

This youtube video sums up what I went through with my first child. So now I'm doing different with my 2nd child. You just made it easy for me with your recommendations esp with the pump part. I've been googling most ideal pump. I have purchased a Haakaa now . will probably buy the medela manual now. I have an existing double electric so I have extra parts in case. Same with you, I hated the idea of being stuck in 1 corner. I wouldn't even bother waking up or express at night due to the process of just pumping. I ended up stopped pumping since I went engorged anyway. And plus like your son, My son refused every bottle. I did nipple shield too for first month coz he was learning breastfeeding too. such identical experience. I feel ya momma! Now I know what to do with 2nd one. and determined to introduce bottles right from the get go to have some respite. lol. Now on to bottle shopping. Lol. i shared your yt video with my friend who'll be a first time mom.haha

Thank you for making this video! With my daughter, I ended up needing a CS and after the surgery, no one allowed me to do skin to skin or allowed me to breastfeed for a few hours. By the time someone actually thought to let me try and get things going, it was three hours after my surgery and my daughter wouldn’t latch. It also didn’t help that I found out I have flat nipples. From that moment on she struggled to latch at every feeding. We needed a nipple shied for the two months I did breastfeed. It was rough. I feel like this jeopardized the whole newborn experience because I was always nursing and when we were nursing, it was such a struggle. And then randomly one day, around two months PP, my milk disappeared completely. I was devastated. To this day, nearly five years later, I still get teary eyed when I think about how my breastfeeding journey with my first. 😔 I’m now 34 weeks with our second, and since we started TTC this time around, I went hard with researching breastfeeding. I’ve even invested in so many breastfeeding things (different kinds of nipple shields, the Lasinoh Latch Assist, the Avent Nipplettes, Spectra S1, and even nursing tops -which I didn’t do with my first). I bought myself two of those Haakaas, but the knock off version from Amazon. I wish I had known about the milk that was being wasted on the opposite side when I breastfed my first! I am determined to do everything differently this time around. I will demand for immediate skin to skin after birth (trying for a VBAC), and I will be trying to initiate breastfeeding within the first hour, because I genuinely believe waiting too long is the reason our breastfeeding journey was set up for failure. I’ve been plagued with the idea of breastfeeding on a daily basis. I’m terrified it won’t work this time either. Im hoping this one takes to breastfeeding easily. If I can’t breastfeed this baby, I’ll probably be completely crushed. So thank you for this video. It’s giving me more hope.

Here a year after you posted this & its still much help to this new mommy !! Personally I’ve had to pump since the day I was discharged with my now 5 week old baby bc I was so engorged !! All she wanted to do was sleep she was barely getting up & honestly I wasn’t to happy about the Lactation Specialist at the hospital.. she was very rough with my baby & I felt almost like she was shaming me in a way.. THANK GOD my baby has not gone through any nipple confusion & I can still latch her as I please. I also just got my Haakaa in the mail yesterday since it’s tricky to pump with her while she’s latched.. but I was wondering why my breast still felt like I had milk after removing my Haakaa & you explained it perfectly. Thanks so much !! You definitely gained a new subbie !! ☺️

I supplemented while in the hospital since my baby was smaller and I had a c-section. Breastfeeding in the hospital was so frustrating and I had way more success as soon as I got home. But there was never nipple confusion with her and she had bottle from the beginning for the majority until we got home and we got the hang of breast feeding. 👍 Edited to say: I had the Haakaa in the hospital and it was such a lifesaver. Because while I never got her to latch at the hospital really, just putting her to my breast and “practicing” and just doing that while the haakaa was on the other was enough for me to get colostrum let down and then I was able to bottle feed her what I got from the haakaa. I highly recommend! Get it before hospital because you will get engorged and will let down and you can catch it all even if you can’t get baby to latch immediately

For anyone who despises pumping, GET a haaka (milk collector), it will save your life. I do NOT respond to a pump. I needed 6 oz for the next night and all I could get was 1 oz for the few times I pumped and I just suck at pumps in general. With the haaka I have 49 oz stashed away in three weeks. And I don't even use it all the time or both sides. So imagine if you actually did both sides! It made me feel so much better and reduced a TON of stress

Wow. What a wonderful video! I just gave birth to my beautiful angel baby who came early-he was only 30 weeks when he was born but now he is 32 weeks and doing amazing in the NICU. But I am pumping all the time and we have just begun to introduce breastfeeding! He actually sucked for a good 5 minutes now that we added the nipple shield which is a literal god send! Yes, pumping every 2 hours around the clock is terribly exhausting and overwhelming but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Like you said, you just do it-we are women, and we are mothers and we are stronger than even we know! Trust yourself and trust your body! Sending love to all you new mothers! Xoxo

I always emptied my breasts to get more of a supply. I would pump 2 oz (each side), feed my son 15 minutes each side, until he was full. And then pump the rest out. Would also label "foremilk" and "hindmilk" based on when I pumped the milk. Or "mixed" if he slept through the night and I pumped at 3 am. That way you can use foremilk on hot days.

You are so right about doctors and “new findings.” That’s actually real important to have a doctor who understands that things change.

Your video is so helpful! I have a question: If you give your daughter a bottle everyday, do you need to do an extra pumping session in place of that feed to avoid a potential decrease in supply?

My son was bottle and breast from day one because I struggled to breast feed and I wanted to be fed. He did great with bottles and breast feeding and took bottles greatly so I agree with you about the bottle.

I just started using the Haakaa. I need ppls opinion, after my baby breast-feeds on one side i try to pump and i dnt get anything and also i pumped the side where i used Haaka and I only got an extra half oz , does tht mean tht the all milk i got at Haakaa is foremilk and hindmilk?? Btw I just started following your channel couple weeks ago and I love your videos you are so real and I love all the informative videos you make, And the fact of how professional you make the video! 👌🏼

Hi lex, I really enjoy your channel you're really kind. Can you please do 'what I eat in a day' because I'm breastfeeding for a month and I'm trying to diet but I still want my baby to get the nutrients..

4 years later and everything you mentioned HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. my first child i had to EP due to tongue and lip tie that went undiagnosed. Second baby had ties, pediatrician brushed it off, took her to an oral surgeon who fixed it in 6 seconds. Now i breastfeed with no issue!

I literally watched this a couple days ago and just got my Haakaa in. I used the Milkie with my first and hated the opening on the top because I would forget and lean over and spill it!! Make sure I get his right. Feed on one side and Haakaa the other. After done you pump the side they fed on. Next feeding you feed on the side where the Haakaa was on.

Lex, my baby is 4 weeks old and breastfeeding is going really well, the Lactation consultant said her latch was really good, however I just checked her lip and it does look like it’s tied, my nipples are still hurting sometimes, my question is, with Willa what made you think she had a lip tie or tongue tie

Question about the first couple weeks of breastfeeding and using the Haaka - when you started breastfeeding, did you only do one breast from the get-go and Haaka the other or did you wait a little bit of time before only feeding on one side? I’ve got a 9d old who lost 10% weight by her well baby check up so the doctor suggested I pump 2-3 times a day just for 5 minutes or so so that I could give her a little “boost” of milk via syringe when she was feeding to help get her weight up (she was falling asleep at the breast). I took out the pump (Spectra), sterilized, washed, hook it up and pumped for 5 minutes and hated it. I can’t imagine doing that all the time or more often, it just felt weird. I’ve seen lots of people praise the hand pump and the Haaka and I want to give them a try, I just don’t know if I could feed all off of one breast right now. Curious when you started the 1 boob feedings? Also - this video was incredibly helpful, I wish I had found it sooner. Especially when you say how hard breastfeeding is for a FTM and how you’re learning how to do it and they’re learning how to do it - helps put all the hard times into perspective so thank you for that 🙏🏼

I'm literally feeding my baby girl about to head to her Tongue Tie appointment! Seriously! The lack of information about them is crazy, thank God my Lactation nurse told me about them cause she noticed some issues right away with her feeding. Latch issues, choking, hiccups and clicking etc. It's been rough. So I've been pumping cause we've had to give her a bottle since her little tongue is worn out and my boobs are so sore from her struggling.

I have the Haakaa and love it! For some reason I can’t get let down with my spectra s2 despite the proper flange size! I just ordered the Medela harmony and hoping I can take that to work and just not use an electric pump. Thx for the advice
