Jim, I save seeds too. As you know, cucumber seeds aren't the only seeds that have that protective goo surrounding them. I think tomato seeds are much messier to save, and since they're lightweight, they like to float right out of the jar. I"ve found that a fine nylon sieve (from Walmart) is very helpful when rinsing off the seeds following the fermentation. I just let them dry right in the sieve, which works great. Have a great weekend! ~Margie

Thanks for the tips Margie. Yes, I have an old metal sieve that I normally use, but it's time to replace it....it's getting pretty rusty :) I think I got mine at Walmart too. You have a great weekend also!

I just scrape the seeds on to a paper towel, labeled. Spread the seeds out and let them dry a week or two. Put the seeds with paper towel folded up into an envelope. All seem to germinate the next year when seed starting arrives.

I really loved this video. I have never saved my cucumber seeds that way, but I sure will next year. I love your storage bins too. ❤

Thanks Rhonda! I'm glad it was helpful. That photos storage box has worked perfect for storing my seeds. It was a mess before.

I have a hubris cucumber that is the best I’ve ever grown. But it’s hybrid. I’ll try growing them to see what happens. They are Sweet success cukes and they get huge and are so good.
@MidwestGardener28 күн бұрын
It's worth a try. The F2 generation is when the most variety happens, so be prepared for each plant to be slightly different than the next. You might find one that you like that you can work on stabilizing. Good luck!

Great video! I've seen this before done with tomato seeds. However I've never done it for the tomato seeds. I've skipped the fermentation process. I never had germination problems with the tomato seeds. I have a difficult time growing cukes, so if I do get some to grow I usually pick them early to enjoy. Either the vine borer or root knot nematodes kill the plants. I planted cukes early fall this year and actually have 6 vines with little cukes on them. Yeah!!!! I can't wait to eat them. As stated in the earlier comments, there's nothing like a home grown vegetable. So much tastier than store bought. Take care and be safe. Have a great weekend.

Thanks Shirley! I understand picking them early. That's when they are at their best. Hope you get a bunch of them! It's going to be a long stretch before we get to enjoy fresh ones again. You have a great weekend too!

Thank you so much for helping me survive I was wondering if I was doing it right or not with the green pepper I just left it in a east facing window until they drive and they looked usable like I got him out of the store
@MidwestGardener2 жыл бұрын
With peppers, I just harvest the seeds from the peppers and let them dry. Some peppers won't germinate well unless the pepper is ripe.

I’m guessing you could do the same process for Tomatoes, melons and other similar seeds that are coated in a jel
@MidwestGardener2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can. It's very similar.

I bought a cucumber and it had little to no seeds how can I tell when a cucumber is juicy, and the taste is excellent...I enjoy them....I never thought the day would come when I would get a cucumber that was not juicy. 😮
@MidwestGardener Жыл бұрын
I like to pick my cucumbers before they get to wide. When they are narrower, they are more crisp and juicy.

I keep in a spare room that I use to start plants in.
