This is the best tutorial I have found on this filter! I’m new to all this and bought the therm 600 and had no idea how to set it up. I was wondering how to get the hoses to for best, where to put the inlet and output on the tank and how to get into the bottom motor . You explained everything perfectly for a beginner like me. It's actually safe to wash the main sponges in tap. The bacteria won't be exposed to the chlorine long enough to significantly reduce their numbers if you're just rinsing them and wringing them out. @primetimeaquatics did a video looking at the science, and back it up with research papers by the American Society for Microbiology and the EPA: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obRleZuinMeqd5s.htmlsi=nrhwpf5TBUsqL-7M

After viewing the clip, I would think the filter media that houses the good bacteria would be on the top shelf of the filter. This would allow the purest clean water to run through the media.

No. The pre filter handles the cleaning of the water. The bio media needs to go on the bottoms for th flow. That’s why the filter has the huge removable pre filter

Great question. So the tube that comes with the filter can be easily cut with a knife. I am writing this away from the store so I am going off memory, I figure you would need about 8 inches to accommodate the intake strainer if you cut the tube down.
@bshaut
@bshaut 5 ай бұрын
Followed the pro tip on the tube installation 👍 definitely made life easier for setup- Now if this thing will stop purging air every 20 seconds… Going to lead off with hose clamps and try to turn the flow down a little- then move on to the pre filter tube drilling mod to give it some more flow if the first steps don’t work. Little air bubbles can be annoying! And not going to lie the included plastic bits seemed a bit cheaper than other competitors, especially at this price point. Thank you for the setup video tho!

Hi, so we run multiple biomasters at the store, 250, 350's and 850 and dont have any issues with air after a day of it running from new. The plastic bits work well- take them out of the bag. On the larger units i like to run from the bottom: the 1plastic helix, 2 matrix or siporax, 3 purigen plus sera clear polishing pads, the rest stock. I will tell you the less you mod them, the better they run and super quiet. make sure your hoses are super straight and not looped over. I even run one tank with the oase UV sterilizer, but all the hoses are very vertical. Ive see issues where the hoses are too long, that causes air bubbles.

@@natureaquariumsusa yeah I’m assuming air is getting in somehow the hoses are all but taught. I have since restricted the flow on the discharge and the intervals have dropped from seconds to minutes 🤔 so I will trouble shoot and report back. I think a little playing with the media some-maybe some clamps and improved flow might be the answer, what has me scratching my head is how turning down the flow improved the purging. Got this over another fx6(never purges hoses are straight connnections are rock solid etc) on my 125 because I liked the heater idea…. We will see how it plays out! I want to love it Lol and not giving up just yet

@@natureaquariumsusa Ok long post- I opened up the canister again, placed my old sponge and bio from my last filter in one or 2 of the blue sponge spots (there ate plenty of them) to my suprise I also noticed on the 850 the pre filter tube has been updated looks like a darker plastic with more holes 👍 as my luck would have it I must have disconnected it from the top or it rattled loose in transit or during install. Fixed that and I adjusted the hoses as best I could without actually cutting them again and greased the main seal. Think I have it to an acceptable level now, just a little finicky lol dam Germans! (I’m allowed to say that) 😆 Thanks again for the video.

Fantastic video. Question for you. Why do you suggest to have the bio media on the bottom shelves vs near the top? From what I’ve seen online most filters go sponge (mechanical) then chemical and bio. Wouldn’t you want the sponge first to keep your bio clean? Any info or feedback from your experience would be greatly appreciated 😀
@natureaquariumsusa
@natureaquariumsusa 6 ай бұрын
Great question. The answer is that the pre filter cleans all the water of mechanical debris. The media included is of the fluidized type so the greatest turbulence will be at the bottom. The rest of the baskets are for bacteria, chemical filtration. Most of the gunk removal is done at the pre filter.

Hi. I would recommend a 600. It will give you a long service interval period (except for the pre filters as they should be cleaned every week). And yes you do need to cut tubes with a knife regardless as it’s one long tube. natureaquariums.com/search?q=biomaster&type=product%2carticle%2cpage%2cquery

Awesome video! I'm actually planning on buying one of these in the next 2 to 3 weeks, i have 2 questions is, do i have to primer it every time after maintenance? And when i do need to clean out the tubes and pipes, do i just take out the inlet and outlet from the tank when im doing a full maintenance on it?
@natureaquariumsusa
@natureaquariumsusa 9 ай бұрын
Great questions. So no. When you just clean the pre filter it holds the prime in the filter so when you re insert the cartridge with the pre filters and open the right valve it purges the air and is ready to go. In case of a major clean when you take the filter to the sink to clean the baskets the prime is held in the tubes by the tube valve that pops off when you move the right lever to the “unlock” position. If you need to clean the pipes then re priming is very easy it’s one pump. When you are ready to buy it, check it out on our website. I will post a discount code for the Oase canister filters here in the comments by tomorrow for anyone watching and reading this to enjoy and use.

It is and it isnt. We use the 250's in heavily planted 20 gal, and we use 250 for 55gal tank. a 350 is real world good for up to 75 gals. Depends on your scape. Why are you putting the biological media at the bottom if you're gonna have sponges after them? Doesnt it make more sens to put the bilogical media after the mechanical filtration?
@natureaquariumsusa
@natureaquariumsusa 4 ай бұрын
Hi. The pre filter handles cleaning the water. I am following the flow as the engineers designed this filter. See the water goes through the 60ppi pre filter and then first (from the bottom - up) to the helix fluidized media. It needs maximum flow and turbulence caused by the bottom layer - then up to the upper chambers.

A different biological media like matrix should be in the top last busked after a fine filter pad at least 100 micron.
@natureaquariumsusa
@natureaquariumsusa Ай бұрын
No. The way the bio masters work the pre filter handles the cleaning of the particles. Then it needs to fluidize the helix media so it tumbles for ammonia reduction. Then you can do matrix, purigen and micron polishing pads. This is not your typical canister.

So what you are smelling is the ammonia and nitrite buildup. We at our store usually do not advocate cycling the tank with fish as it’s very toxic to the fish and can be smelly. Once your tank is finished cycling with regular water changes (10-15%) there should be no smell.

Hi. Actually that is the way Oase designed the filter. @@natureaquariumsusa While the media they include is designed for use in fluidized filters the media does not move as intended in a canister filter. It is static and since plastic is a hostile environment for bacteria it supports very little bacteria - from an efficiency point of view it would be better to swap out the Hel-x media (plastic media) for something which was much more suited to bacterial colonization (good quality ceramic / sintered glass media).
@natureaquariumsusa
@natureaquariumsusa 5 ай бұрын
So there are a couple of answers to your point. One is that plastic holds on to the aerobic bacteria quite well. The amount they provide if properly placed in the bottom tray out of the nylon bag will actually bounce around. This is by design and it works much like a wet dry filter with plastic bioballs. Remember in a fw tank with gravel or aqua soil a lot of the anaerobic bacteria will live there. I personally like using the the bottom tray with the helix plastic media provided and the second tray I remove the sponge and add matrix or siporax to supplement and increase the bio media. Remember that they use a soft plastic which is porous so it does house the anaerobic bacteria as well. The majority of hang on back filters use plastic for bacteria and are regularly used in bare bottom tanks and perform the nitrogen cycle just fine.
