@@VolvoLaplanderCamper y advice to you from an "old school" tyre fitter, is get rid of the jemmy bars. They are for destroying buildings and woodwork, not for changing tyres. I would purchase a decent pair of levers, dont buy cheap. The lever is key to the ease of doing it.They should be at least 600mm long to aid the leverage. Longer is a little troublesome as the length sometimes gets in the way. You can often use a set of locking lever grips on the rim to stop the tyre spinning when putting it on, again dont buy cheap, they bend. Get other small things like a valve puller, a good VERY sharp knife, a valve tool, airline adapters, and so on. A decent patch kit too, of course. Patches often fail unless the rubber is buffed using liquid buffer, which etches the rubber and primes it for the patch so pack a tin of that. The last tip is a lot of the small stuff you will get off a local tyre bay, and i am sure they would give you a few pointers too on easy ways of doing it. As to your suggestion to break the beads, while good if you have nothing else, if you often go into the middle of nowhere i suggest you get a set of "tyrepliers". They dont take up much space and are very good at breaking beads. The only other thing, in my early days of learning i asked my mentor the secret. He looked at me and said, "its like drinking Scotch, a little, often." Wise words Gerry, RIP.
