In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I will show you how to eat a Pomelo. I will also do a Pomelo Taste Test. For those of you who aren't familiar with a Pomelo, it is the largest citrus fruit. It is normally the size of a large cantaloupe or 2 to 3 times the size of a grapefruit. There are different varieties that will have either a green peel or yellow peel. And the inside will be either yellow or pink! The pomelo has a really thick rind/pith, the white stuff! Which is bitter, so don't eat that. They are highly nutritious and very tasty. They are sweeter than a grapefruit but still have a hint of tartness as well.
Have you ever had a pomelo? Drop a comment down below and let me know. :)

Pomelos are awesome. But we in Southeast Asia cut it in a different way than you did. Im an Indian, and we just sorta peel it like you would peel a potato and get rid of the thick skin on top. Then we go ahead and seperate the teardrops from the white bitter part by hand. That way you won't be wasting any and it will be less messy.

Ive never had one! But... i have ocd and i have a very picky way of eating citrus by removing all the skin and i love love love the oranges that arent that juicy or sweet which is weird to ppl. But i love the texture of those little vesticles or whatever they're called. The actual little fruit sacks! And i search for the largest almost unripe dry oranges or grapefruits to eat this way. So this seems like the absolute perfect citrus for me bc they tear apart into those perfect little sacs that i love so so much! Omg now i must go get a few!! Thanks for showing how to eat one!

I absolutely LOVE Pomelos. I watched another video on how to open one and Option 2 is actually the correct way, but either way, it eats the same. As you said, it's sweeter than a regular grapefruit, and the texture of the fruit reminds me of eating a big navel orange. Those little juicy "teardrops" are amazing! I just wish they didn't have such a short season. Sometimes I can't find any in the area where I live and then I have to wait a year for the next short season. I always say I'm only going to eat half of one, but they are so good I can't leave them alone and the next thing I know, I've eaten the entire pomelo. Nope, no guilt at all. LOL

@@inthekitchenwithmatt So I went back to the grocery store for another Pomelo and some (red) grapefruits. This time they had sweeties/oroblanco. I of course googled before purchasing and decided to purchase a couple. Okay so I only eat the red grapefruit. The regular grapefruits are not my cup of tea AT ALL. Gives me chills or a very weird feeling 😫 when I eat them 😂. The Pomelo was pretty good. Sort of a light sweet taste. Not too sweet, just enough sweetness. The Sweetie was more like the red grapefruit but with a slight sensation (😫) of the regular grapefruit but not too much that I couldn't eat it. So to sum it up I will stick with the red grapefruits and the Pomelo (while in season) 😊. The sweetie didn't provide enough sweetness that I could see choosing that over the (non-hybrid) grapefruit. I will enjoy the ones I purchased though 😂.

I love citrus so much, have just come from watching your video on candied citrus. I buy citrus in larger volumes from a Crowdfarming project, so I have a lot to process while it is at its best. I made a lengthy list of all that I could make with these fruits, but I haven't as yet found someone who supplies pomelo. Sadly, the choice in some of our supermarkets is getting more restricted, I used to see Pomelo and Tangelos in the shops years ago, now I guess they would have to be bought from specialist grocers. I know of a farmer growing them in Corsica, but I am finding varieties of limes and pomelo etc harder to come by. Have you tried using Pectinex to remove the white membrane? If you peel it as far as you can without damaging the membranes, you can soak the fruit in Pectinex which will break down the pith. Thanks Matt.
@inthekitchenwithmatt

Yeah, Citrus is so awesome and yummy! Even here it is hard to find Pomelo, the season is so short. Maybe like a couple weeks out of the year I can find them at my supermarket. now I haven't tried Pectinex, that sounds like a cool trick.

I just saw one for the first time in the store a couple weeks ago so did some research and came to your video. Wonder if i could eat these the same way? Doubt i could eat it all though. I really want to try it. I also saw through research that some people bake them with butter 🧈 🤔 learn new things all the time

Hi Alexis! Yes you can eat it that way, that is very similar to the first way I showed. If you love grapefruit you will love these!

3 yrs after ur pomelo video in OH! Just saw first pomelo (yellow ) in my weekly grocery ad. What is that! Can’t wait to try it. Ur video is very informative, easy to follow, good speaking speed. Can’t wait to try. My siblings & I (OH & NYC) stopped buying peaches, pears, most apples & strawberries all of us won’t buy all unless from a local farm or pears (I buy Harry & David for fruend’s birthday; not myself) So tired of wasting money for fruit that’s mealy texture & zero flavor. Also don’t like seedless watermelon cuz 50% of time it’s yuck & mushy frozen like flesh. Bought first melon I found in years at Giant Eagle( supermarket) with old fashioned black seeds & was not disappointed. it! We have local orchard in Kent, Ohio -Beckwiths that takes us back to childhood when it was rare to get any bad fruit. In NEO late July thru Fall check Beckwith’s out. Call ahead for season opening date first!

Pomelos are amazing, a grapefruit on steroids. Having tried both the "right" preparation (method 2), and the "wrong" way (method 1), hands down method 1 is a much more enjoyable eating experience. It is more tedious to cut along the cell membranes on both sides of each cell (vesicle), and then to score again along the outer edge (especially if you take care not to cut the membranes separating each cell). That modest investment in time pays huge dividends, as you can then use a spoon to very easily extract the juicy and delicious nuggets of fruit almost entirely intact!! Wonderful!
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill!! I know right, steroids is an understatement. I feel like these could have been used as projectiles instead of rocks for catapults lol. Yeah I always do method 1, that is how I like doing my grapefruit too. I like that it is in its own "bowl" and I can just scoop it out with my spoon and sprinkle a bit of sugar or salt on top. So yummy! Glad you like it that way too!

I usually tackle them the way they do it in SE Asia. The Thai's seem to be able to get the sections out without much pith. I've watched it done. A lot depends on the Pomelo. There, you can buy one sectioned for $1.50. When buying them here, I'm very careful about finding heavy one's with a ripe smell. Otherwise, it's a waste of money and time.
@inthekitchenwithmatt

Yeah the heavy ones are the way to go. Those ones in the video were quite nice. They don't have them very often here at my supermarket however, just a few short weeks that they are available. Might have to hit up the Asian Market.

I never watched a video on how to peel it just kinda figured it out I did the 2nd way save yourself some time and do it the first way I just ate a yellow one it was a pane in the ars to eat with all of the tiny seeds it tasted like a orange mixed with a little bit of grapefruit but not bitter surprisingly my fruit was clear inside and not crazy sweet but still varry good not as acidic as a orange or grapefruit it was quite pleasant like you can eat a lot and not get tired of it it has so much juice I just wish they made a pomelo juice now that would be amazing
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the first way it how I like to do my grapefuit, have been doing it that way for years and years. You can also like I briefly mention in the end, just use a knife and cut around it, you can do that even with the peel on and cut further in, kind of how you would cut a pineapple. You may have some fruit stuck to each piece, but that is a quicker way to do it as well.
