🎥 Eating a Fishtail Palm Tree: • Eating a FISHTAIL PALM...
Big On Spice - plant based, unique fruits and vegetables, food reviews!
Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand - Welcome to Nakhon Si Thammarat, in Southern Thailand. Today we’re going to pick and eat one of my favorite fruits - Cempedak (In Thai it’s known as a jambada จำปาดะ). #fruit #cempedak #plantbased
We were lucky to be in Southern Thailand during cempedak season. It’s a very seasonal fruit, and it doesn’t travel well - so even just 800 kilometers away in Bangkok it’s very rare to ever find cempedak. But during season in Southern Thailand, it’s everywhere. I’ve eat cempedak countless times, but this was my first time to see it on the tree, growing. And what a sight that is, so much fruit, it’s incredible. We picked a few, and ate both the fruit seeds, and the pulpy outer flesh which is extremely good.
The next day we stopped at a common roadside stall and ate a huge cempedak. And finally to finish off this guide to cempedak, we were at a local market where we ate some deep fried cempedak. Although it’s not the healthiest option, it’s so good. I love especially that when the cempedak is cooked, you can eat the seeds.
If you have a chance, don’t miss eating cempedak fruit - and unique and exotic Southeast Asian fruit, especially common in Southern Thailand, Malaysia, and parts of Indonesia.
Thank you for watching and hope you’re having a fantastic day!

cempedak is one of the members of the jackfruit family and it is also commonly grown throughout Malaysia as well. the sweet and aromatic cempedak fritters are also one of the popular streetfood snacks in Malaysia. we can actually eat its seed straight from the fritters and its tastes starchy and soft. some people use that fruit to make cakes and i have tried a very delicious creamy cempedak cake before. in Borneo, there is also another fruit native to the jackfruit family called tarap which has a very distinct aroma from both jackfruit and cempedak containing bright white fleshes.

I am growing an orange Cempedak plant which I bought as a seedling in November 2023,I am growing it in a greenhouse just north of Sydney (Newcastle) in Australia & it grew really fast (I bought it & it was 1 foot tall & by this winter in June it was 3 feet tall). While it's young I am giving it frost & cold protection but they will grow in zone 10b which is what the cold hardiness zone is at my location once they have matured a bit,if it's not the cold which will kill the seedlings it's either too much rain or too much sunlight during summer time, the seedlings need to be kept in a semi shaded area to prevent them from getting scorched during summer time. So I look forward to eating that Cempedak as well as the jackfruit that I am also growing, both plants are a bit over 1 metre tall, people grow jackfruit in Sydney so they will grow further north near Newcastle in New South Wales !

This is very common in kerala,, their are two main types of jackfruit here. Fist one is hard that is used as fruit and the second one is soft and used to make curries for lunch along with rice, thats the same cembadak, here also we call them chembadak.. Here it is very big. The anatomy of this is simple, the big fruts are festilized flowers and the fibres are unfertilized flowersss.......

Cempedak is my favourite local fruit! Sometimes I like it more than durian. We coat them in batter and fry them. The same batter that we use for banana fritters. We even made it into ice cream or cheese cake similar to what we do to the durian flesh. They are seasonal fruit and taste so different from jackfruit. Go and try them if you ever come across one in Malaysia where I’m from. You won’t regret it!

Mark, there are rare delicacy from West and Central Kalimantan in Indonesia using Cempedak skin in called "Mandai", i ate it last year, i will share the recipe here... - u just use the white part of cempedak skin (take away outer skin and fibrous parts) - soak the white spongy skin in salt water for 12hrs or more in refrigerator, longer it is, tastier it become, coz in history, this food is intended for preserved food using salt, and vegan meat substitute - then u can pick some from these in fridge, and sautee it with shallots, garlic etc, or deep fried it... - Taste like meat, but it absorb all the seasoning & still have slight aroma of cempedak... -U can search in internet "Mandai" for more recipes tho really, no parts wasted from this fruit! all can be cooked and eaten

Hello, I'm an Indonesian that grew up in the province of South Kalimantan, and there's a recipe here called mandai, which were made of cempedak's skin. To make it, you peel off the outer part of the skin, leaving only the white part, then you cut it to small pieces, clean it, and soak in water to soften it (or use brine to preserve it). You can then consume it after frying them. Tastes great when eaten together with rice. Anyway, great video, Mark! Cheers from Indonesia 🇮🇩

The 2nd fruit that you eat is setol/setul/sentul/sentol that gives the name of the province of Satun which was formerly the Malay Kedah state (now colonised by the Siamese Thailand) of Setul/Setol... tq

Mark, you can eat durian seeds too. 30 - 40 years ago when i was little, after a family durian feast, we would wash the durian seeds and steam them. They're like baby new potatoes. You can eat them with or without the skin on. And we always sprinkled a little salt in an empty durian shell, mix with water and drank out of it. Apparently to drive out the heatiness of the durian.

Love Jackfruit when visiting the Philippines 🇵🇭! I enjoy it as a treat like an egg roll. They add sweet plantain cut in length with brown sugar and a few strips of jackfruit in a thin egg roll wrapper and deep-fried.
