How To Effectively Get Rid of Pests With Dawn Dish Soap
animalpestcontrols.com/how-to...
#pestcontrol #pests #dawndishsoap
Dawn dish soap is a well-known brand that’s probably sitting in your kitchen, but have you ever wondered if Dawn is helpful in getting rid of pests.
Many common pests die when they come into direct contact with Dawn dish soap that’s been diluted in water.
The soapy water is thought to wash away a bug’s protective coating, so the pest dries out and dies.
There are many ways to use dawn dish soap depending on what you are trying to get rid of, and generally it’s a better alternative to commercial insecticidal products.
Lets take a look at the best ways to use it against pests.
1, Ants.
If you have ants or other bugs around the house, pour a 50 50 mixture of Dawn dish soap and water into an empty spray bottle and when you see the insects, spray them with the mixture.
Provided you really saturate those little critters, the soap actually breaks down their exoskeletons, and they die almost immediately.
2, Flies. Take a jar and fill it half or a third full of apple cider vinegar.
Next, gently mix in a few squirts dish soap, maybe a teaspoon amount, so there are no bubbles.
Then, leave it on your counter overnight near where you see them.
In the morning there will be drowned fruit flies in the bottom of it.
If the first night doesn’t catch them, make a fresh batch the next day to catch the stragglers.
How this works is the apple cider vinegar smells like rotten fruit to the fruit flies and attracts them.
The liquid dish soap breaks the surface of the vinegar and sucks them in when they try to land, which drowns them.
3, Moles. dawn dish soap can be used to get rid of ground moles.
Start by mixing about 4 ounces of castor oil with a teaspoon of the dishwashing liquid.
Put this into a common garden spray bottle and add water until you have completely filled the bottle.
It should be warm or hot water to make sure that the mixture mixes well, and you should shake vigorously after you have combined the blend.
Now, all you need to do is go around your yard spraying the mixture of oil and soap.
You don't need to be excessive about it but you should make sure that you have liberally used it across the yard.
This will help to make sure that it stays on your grass or other plants for quite some time.
Your next step is to go and fill all the visible holes that you have seen where the moles could be gaining access and pat down securely.

Do not hurt lady bugs. They eat aphids, etc. Do no harm to butterflies. They pollinate flowers and vegetable/apple flowers. In our basement we do put a shallow bucket of soapy sugar water….and camel crickets, roaches jump right in n drown.

I came across this use for my favorite dish soap when visiting my mom who has ants. I instinctively grabbed the Power wash when I saw a few and they immediately died. It became my weapon for them in the house and cracks in the cement. I mentioned it to my plumber and he gave the exact same explanation about the exoskeleton. It also knocked down wasps. She lives in Delaware so bugs are part of life but it’s not acceptable to me. Btw, I did get the same results with Clean Freak.

I've been using Dawn Ultra & water in a spray bottle for years instead of the near-endless/costly variety of home spray cleaners(I add chlorine bleach to make my kitchen/bathroom mix germ-killing). And it wasn't long after starting that I found it effective against a variety of insects. Thank you for better explaining why.

@@sweetbeep At 100% Dawn will melt the grease and crud from an automobile's neglected engine and engine bay. Yet it is mild enough to wash crude oil from affected ducks fouled in an oil spill. Exact ratios are not really necessary. Chlorine bleach, however, can be disastrous to the color of fabrics if too much is used. Perhaps 'Anti-Bacterial Dawn' would be a safer, more user-friendly concentrate for most UNdescerning households. 👍

I got a new bed and have tried everything. I'm going to try this, it sounds like a winner and I don't have to deal with all that poison in my place. I get the occasional roach and mice, but they are easy to deal with....Thanks, I'll try to keep you posted on how it all goes. Time to get the latest and hopefully final battle started right now! lol

I've already noticed the benefits of having Dawn dish soap (or the Kroger store brand version, same thing) in my house. I was having a lot of trouble with ants in my house. I switched to Dawn (green apple scent) because it was on sale. I left it uncapped for ease of use. Shortly thereafter, no more ants. I figured out why. All the standard home remedies for ants (peppermint oil, cinnamon, etc.) depend on things with a strong smell/aroma. Ants live by scent. Those strongly scented items disrupt the ants' abilities to search for food, send signals to each other, etc. Since Dawn seems to repel ants (and a lot of other bugs), there's something in it (the scents added to make it pleasant for us humans, whatever gives it it's grease-cutting power, something) that messes up the ants' scenting abilities. This is why I keep an open bottle of Dawn (actually the Kroger store brand since it's the same thing) in my house by my kitchen sink. When I need to buy some more, the old bottle goes in my bathroom (another spot the ants seem to love) so the little bit still in it can repel those little bugs. When it's time to buy another bottle again, the old bottle goes in the trash, the kitchen bottle goes in the bathroom, and the new bottle goes in the kitchen. I keep this cycle going year round. I've also noticed other bugs have either greatly reduced their numbers or disappeared altogether. All because I keep open bottles of Dawn in my kitchen and bathroom. BTW, I noticed something else interesting about a common household item. When I drive around, I usually take a can of Diet Coke (or rather, usually the Kroger store brand) with me, especially during Summer. By the time I'd get home, the drink would be warm, and there wouldn't be much left. So instead of taking it into my house to pour out into the sink, I poured it out in the grass and then took the empty can inside to dispose of properly. It didn't harm the grass, but after doing this for a few months, I started to notice something: my yard was free of fire ants! So I kept up the practice. I don't think the Diet Coke kills them. I think they don't like it for some reason (the CO2, the stuff that makes it a diet drink, whatever), so it drives them away. When I noticed fire ants starting nests on the other of my house, away from my driveway, I'd take some Diet Coke to pour on those nests. I used to do this regularly when I mowed my own grass, but since I've become unable to mow my lawn myself (I pay a neighbor who makes a little extra money by mowing grass for folks like me), I don't see any nests developing, and my neighbor just runs over them without any worries. The fire ants stay outside, so I'm not worried about them anymore. Now, here's the thing that pops into my head every once in a while: Fire ants are notoriously tough bugs. If Diet Coke is nasty enough to drive away these super-tough bugs, what's it doing to me as I drink it? Hmm... 🤔 😲 😟 😵
@jimgilbert9984
@jimgilbert9984 Ай бұрын
@@RStark-ek7mh 😱 I've never heard that! If it's true, you can't measure that against its effect on fire ants. Those are the toughest bugs I've ever run across. Diet cola doesn't kill them, but they don't like it, so they move away, and it takes a lot to make them move.
@jimgilbert9984
@jimgilbert9984 Ай бұрын
@@RStark-ek7mh Thoughts like this help to explain the resurgence of people starting their own gardens and even starting a homesteading lifestyle. They grow their own fruits and vegetables, they grow their own herbs/plants for making beverages (teas, sodas, wines, beers, etc.), and they raise their own animals for meat and eggs. They also make their own natural, organic pesticides and cleaning supplies that are not harmful to humans or animals. Personally, I want to do all of that, too.

This does work to stop what you can see, but not so much in the way of deterring new pests in most cases. If there's enough residual on some plants it Could keep certain pests away, either way it's just slightly more effort but a much better "solution" than using all the harsh chemicals that aren't good for anything to be exposed to. 😄👍

What about fleas?
@dlspeed1
@dlspeed1 Ай бұрын
yes, helped me with fleas a few years ago, filled a bucket with warm water and then soap, mix well and slowly lowered the pet into soapy water up to their neck and fleas will try and jump off and the soap in the water will put a top barrier on water surface so they can not jump out of water and then kills them. Don't remember how much soap i used, but not much and kept the dog/cat in water for about 3-5 minutes. Only 1 or 2 fleas made it out of the water and the rest died in the water. Not sure how they made it out, maybe as I lifted dog/cat out of water. So yes, it does work. ~~~Peace~~~
