Got my first bike a week and a half ago. I was very slow on starts keeping to the MSF "slowly release clutch and then apply throttle when you start to roll." Starting slow does not make other drivers in Brooklyn happy. Tried the technique in the video and didn't stall or have cars up my a** when the light turned green. My confidence also shot up without the fear of stalling at the light. Thanks. Now time to absorb the other material!

This is why I installed dual flame throwers on my bike. One for each side.

I have been riding since 2004, I'm 50 years old and still consider myself a novice I am so glad I found your channel I have learned and practiced so much of what your teaching on your channel. Hes already said hes made sure to check before just taking off. hes not just taking off as soon as it turns green before making sure some idiots running thru a red light to hit him in the intersection or he wouldnt be here teaching us these techniques...stupid is literally everywhere, especially in the youtube comment sections

Have to say, thought I was an OK rider - until I started practicing some of the maneuvers that I've seen in your videos. It's been informative, humbling, and confidence inspiring. A genuine Thank You for sharing your experience and knowledge, and for doing it in a way that's easy to grasp, and put into physical application (thankful to have closed parking lots close to home).

Hello. I was the guy in the blue shirt! Anyway, just wanted to publicly acknowledge how amazing FastEddie is. I met him in person, and just want to say that I learned more in the 30mins he coached me than I have in my years of riding. As an extra, he put me in the back of his GS and we went around the parking lot while he knee dragged! I weigh 190 lbs, and for him to do what he did with all that weight was really impressive.

Can’t get enough of that take off. I wasn’t expecting it! I can’t stop watching it. I’m learning how to ride a motorcycle late in my 30s, and taking of at intersections and steep hills kinda scares me. Sometimes I do it right, sometimes I don’t and frustration gets me precisely because of my safety, but your videos are very helpful in gaining confidence, which is one of the most important things.

As a new rider, this is exactly what I need. Thank goodness for a long driveway where I can practice this and the white/blue belt stops while still hitting 20mph. Keep up the good work, @motojitsu!

An added bonus with this technique is you avoid the "take off wobble" I see this all the time, because the forward momentum makes you more stable.

Great idea - provided you've DOUBLE CHECKED that some car isn't about to run their red light and wipe you out.

My goodness... Taking off like that might actually encourage people to race you at the next intersection. I ride daily too (and lanesplit everywhere) but I only try to get a jumpstart to pick a lane, mostly not to annoy people. Annoyed drivers are the most dangerous in my experience.

But that’s kinda risqué because someone may be running a red light and could hit you as your taking off. I usually tend to wait a second or two. Make sure no one is running them lights

I see soooo many people running red lights these days there is no way I'm launching myself into an intersection as soon as the light goes green. I'd rather get swiped by a car going 5 miles an hour than T-boned by a car going 40 . Stupid is everywhere - Best quote everywhere.

Good advice. May I add one piece myself? When stopping at a red light, pull all the way over the the side of the lane (if going straight over) so that any vehicle NOT stopping at the red light does not kill you. This applies to stop signs and give way junctions, too. I have had this happen. I stopped at a red light knowing that a big truck was right behind me and we were both going quickly. I pulled over to the very edge of the road and the truck - some 20 to 30 thousand kilos of it - sailed through the red light. It would have killed me for certain. It was inches away. Here in Japan almost all (I can confidently say more than 99%) of truck drivers are courteous and safe, and the speed limits are lower than in Europe / the UK, but every so often.... In another comment below, someone mentioned 'right of way'. Cyclists here of all ages very frequently assume that 'right of way' and 'the physics related to stopping a car' are one and the same. I have seen many cars hit careless and daydreaming cyclists on crossings/at junctions. Also cyclists here often ride on the wrong side of the road, especially school children. As many have said, assume that the car drivers are careless and vengeful and that they want to hurt you, even though in most cases that is not true. I like this guy's presentation style.

this is an area I need to improve on, I'm not great at getting away as quickly as you. I can get away enough to stay out of danger, but still practice makes perfect.

A big thumbs up for your videos! My wife and I love it. The skill you touch on in this video is a MUST for every bike commuter. The take-off in traffic is one of the key benefits a bike has over a car.

Solid tips MoTo. I concur...I treat every car as there is an idiot behind the wheel, on the phone either drunk or on oxy. Because in Cali it’s usually 2 out of those three.

Good stuff Eddie, I was hit once because of not getting out fast enough or maybe the car behind me just getting ahead of himself. Fun thing is I ended up sort of drifting forward with my bike turned like 70 degrees to the left and I don't know how I did it but my reaction was to hit the throttle really hard while in first gear and somehow managed to turn the bike the right way and stay on both wheels. Just had a tiny bruise on my right leg but every time I think about this, it could've been really bad for me D:

First comment! Haha. Hi, Eddie. That´s what I usually do. Just to mention that we all need to pay attention to the cars from left and right intersection, not just from the two on our sides. That´s what it happened to me. Someone passed the red light and I can´t stop in time. All I could do was to try to pass (zig-zag) behind the car and I hit with the right-hand brake the tail light of the car. I´m recovering from my left patella injury. Regards.

I always pull up hard to the drivers side in stopped traffic, one day the car coming up from behind rear ended the car in front of me if I wasn't hard over I would have been crushed. But only lately is it law to split traffic in Washington state. But you don't have to try as hard as you on a gsxr 1000

Hi Eddie, from Melbourne Aust here. Eddie, that was good advice. Subscribed. I’m in my mid 60’s & have been riding for 45 years. From the days of the K series Honda 750’s & the old CB Hondas & Kawasaki 2 stroke triples. Although i know how important position is, observation, escape route & assumption of other motorists stupidity, sometimes you get slack & you revert to riding as you drive a car. Laziness & not being switched on. Listening to what you said pulled me back into line. Will keep an eye on your videos. Cheers mate.

Sound advice, but in the UK you have to be careful of drivers creeping forward before the lights change, risking running over your foot etc. So your words of wisdom are even more important! Better to have the idiots behind you.

I love this technique. I do this all the time too. I live in Thailand at the moment where pretty much anything goes. I do it for the exact same reason you do it. And if you think drivers are bad there come to Thailand. If I see a Thai on a bike I feel I am somewhat safe, If I see a Thai in a car I am scared. If I see a foreigner on a bike I feel scared, if I see a foreigner in a car I feel somewhat safe. But here you own the space you occupy only, you can't feel safe around you at all. I laugh at all the western people who drive here and lose their cool if someone invades their space lol. There are so many people on the roads here that this is just how it works. If people didn't drive like this you would never get to where you are going just because of the volume of vehicles. You have to be on your guard 100% of the time on public roads here.

Good video I've been doing the same for years basically get all set up in launch mode have the drivetrain loaded and ready to go, All slack has been taken up and adjusted ready for launch I usually like to feel my engagement of the clutch and then just pull out of it like you said and then your ready to rock!

Brilliant tip. Whenever I filter / lane split and go to the front at traffic lights I always sort of cut across the car at the front at a bit of an angle so they can't go anywhere even if they wanted to, and then if there's time I make eye contact with them or at least look at them in the mirror. Some might say that some people might not like how you've pushed in and cut them off but it's ok, they can't go anywhere unless they go through you and if you're filtering in traffic you have to be able to judge what's going on because it's always a risk doing it but don't go to the front of your going to be slow and hold the cars up when it's time to go, that's not right.

I also want to take off quickly if I split the lane because it just feel courteous, people in the UK seem rather aware and will let you go ahead it you put yourself towards the front, to then move away like a granny is holding them up for no good reason.

Trying to be positive, but this is the silliest thing I’ve seen on KZfaq. Bikes 9 times out of 10 will be faster than your average car. There is no need to preload the engine like this, you could easily go just as fast clutching out and giving the bike gas.

If I may be permitted: At the intersection as you described, you managed to lane-share to the front, BUT you stay in-between the cars until you take off. I personally prefer moving directly in front of a car (either side - does not matter) even though I may be encroaching a little into the intersection, but of course out of the way of traffic still. Pedestrians can walk around me. That way, I "own" the lane and I leave the traffic behind me in the dust on take off (having of course made sure that the intersection is safe to enter and cross after green lights). Why do you prefer instead to remain in-between the cars after lane-sharing to the front?

I mean that’s cool and all, but I’ve been at a light and was ready when the opposite light turned yellow, when my light turned green, I took off fast, got about 6 ft into the intersection and a car ran the red light and missed me by about 3 ft. So yea I’ll probably never do it again lol just my experience with taking off quickly. I’m cool with being patient and waiting 2 seconds before entering the intersection. Like you said “stupid is everywhere”

came back to this vid to say this finally bashed into my thick skull the need to sync your throttle control with your clutch as one smooth movement - especially when starting from stationary! seems so obvious but I just had the best two rides of my first few weeks of riding thanks to this!

I've done the same thing for about 26 years brother. I continue to do this BUT, one shinny day in sacramento california, a motorcycle officer a few cars behind me pulled me over for this. I didn't break traction, the speed limit or raise the wheel. I got an "exhibition of speed" ticket. Lucky me.

This video is 2 years old but its good stuff ive had a sport bike for 3 weeks and the number of ppl that try to race me is incredible...i let them win every time because i dont want that ticket and they probably dont know how to drive and i wanna live...but i never thought to rest on my legs before a launch in traffic...good advice brother semper fi

I won't quite hit it like you do, but it's great info to have. You've certainly mastered that bike. Lol. Be a bit more careful about getting hit, it could be your life.

Over here in Houston, we have a lot of stupid drivers that like to pass red lights all the time. Doing that here will mean bad news for the rider. If you’re in front at the light, you need to look both ways before you take off. I guess all the drivers in your town obey the traffic laws lol. Thanks for the vid dude.

I do this every single time now away from lights etc, not only has your instruction helped me pass the two tests you have to do in England they have also made me a better rider!

This is exactly why I’ve been watching sooooooooooo many videos I’m not trying to speed but I’m trying to be out . I wanna enjoy my ride and not ever think hey imma die as a brand new rider . I’ve always been aware of bikers but this makes me so much more aware of bikers being that I want to be a biker as well

Thank you. I'm a noob. I was making a left hand turn today and stalled out. Thank god I didn't get killed. I'll go to a parking lot and keep practicing this technique. I need to learn how much my wet clutch can take. Was taught for years in a car to minimize clutch transfer time. Love your videos. I can tell you a truly a nice guy.

In NYC, I do this a lot. Otherwise, there are obvious problems as you explained. Excellent video. I'm on a 1990 Goldwing and thank God it's smooth and powerful. Once I open the throttle, I can be in the next county. Love your channel. Excellent tips.

Not bad advise, just not perfect.... well it’s not a perfect world. I used to bolt out from red lights, but one day I just felt like taking my time. As I began to move forward a youngster blew the red light at about 70 mph. Never saw him coming never heard him coming and would not be alive today had I moved any quicker. Now days I just sort of blend in with the traffic as we move away from the streetlight. I like your comment about staging your self at the right rear of the car in front of you then once the light turns green and they begin to move forward you can split through them after the intersection. Again not bad advice, but it is a little like playing Russian roulette.

Great video. I also always pull away fast at the light for the exact reason you mention, but also because then I usually have a clear road ahead with no or very few cars to worry about. I've been riding in LA traffic and lane splitting (BTW not every motorcycle rider here does it) for four months now and only once did someone (Civic) decide he wanted to race. Unfortunately for him, there was a cop just up ahead on the side of the road who immediately pulled the guy over, when he saw how he was chasing me. I only have a 310 cc bike so it's not that easy to outrun even smaller cars. Most people are real considerate though, and move to the side when they see me coming in between the cars, in their mirror.

I respect you. I have watched every motorcycle safety video I can find and some are legit and some are a sham. I can tell that you are an experienced rider and your technique makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

There must be a lot of dumbs in states too. haha.:) I also use this way to decrease any risk of dangerous situation though, ive also experienced dizzy moments by another stupid cars which were still passing fast intersection from my right or left sides couple of times, even though the traffic signal already chanegd to the green. Dude you just made me more afraid to ride my motorcycle.... Just because lane splitting is legal doesn't mean you should take advantage of it, there is a good and not-so-good time to take advantage of that. I'm not sure I would want to park myself in between two cars at a traffic light and then throttle it once the light turns green as there may be somebody coming from your left or your right cheating the yellow light. You're better off parking behind a car and give yourself Buffer room to escape if a car behind you appears to not be stopping...

I've been riding for over 50 years and have taken over 25 different instructional riding courses as well as a several professional racing instruction classes and have over 2 million miles in the saddle. You'll use "your technique" for awhile until you end end up killing yourself because of it.....the best thing you said is, "...I'm not telling you what to do, this is what I do..." NO riding instructor ANYWHERE will ever tell you that what you're doing is o.k. ........wrong as the day is long!!!

That's a great point. I feel the same way when I ride I stay away from cars they will win if they hit you.
