All of the instructions, warning stickers, and labels say DO NOT USE TANK FLUSH with the valve closed. I dump and rinse with it open. I like to also fill my black tank half with water at the start of use, and I fill it up from the toilet flush with water before dumping.

I believe the idea is turn on water with valve open to flush out not take chance of overflowing tank!

You could also purchase a water meter when filling blank tank.

FYI When using the Black Tank Flush, I keep the drain valve CLOSED, and have someone in the bathroom stepping on the toilet valve to open it. It's a stinky job, but prevents the tank from exploding from air pressure, and, prevents a flood. This is how I fill the black tank for flushing/rinsing/cleaning services. Works great.

I enjoyed your video and especially the close up sots for details. I have read that the owner should use the black tank flush with the vale open, not closed as in your video, to prevent an overflow incident as you experienced. Do you think that just letting the water run through the system and tank for a long time will do the same function as you closing the valve and letting water run for 5-8 minutes?

I don't have an RV, but I feel a little more prepared now if I ever get one.

Great video. I am new to using my RV. Question though, What is the size of your grey and black tanks? Under normal usage, how long can you go without dumping?

Your last valve can be very useful in flushing your black tank. Here's what I do. Drain black tank and leave black tank valve open. Close your "last valve" just before the clear section. Now open your grey tank valve and let it back flow into the black tank. Close grey tank valve, open your "last valve" and watch the massive amount of TP and "stuff" that comes out. Even after using a tank rinser you will find this method pulls out a lot more stuff from the black tank. That surge of water really stirs things up in the black tank. I repeat this process 2 or 3 times until there's only enough grey left to rinse the hose. The beauty of this system is you can even use it at the dump station and it works better than using fresh water to back fill or rinse.

I was lucky enough to go check water lever when rinsing out my black tank by going in to open the toilet bowl dump valve with my foot and with a flashlight - was able to see the water level directly and gauge it when to shut off the water feed. I would like too install a small water over flow level port just near the top of the tank (And above the water inlet feed) and not have to round around and go inside and stand over it to monitor the level. I am thinking a small 1/4 " cock valve in the end of it too keep sewage from leaking out of it but close it when your using the rv and only open it to tell you where your at in water level. Glass sight tubes would be a bit problematic and could easily break - sending sewage everywhere (But at least our side) in the utility bay. I also want to do this with the gray water tank as well. Gray water tank here doesn't have a fresh water feed input...only the black. If I needed to do a deep clean too the tank....I would have to manually add water to the sink or shower stall - hard to do when your not hooked up to water. Sorry too hear of your mess there....plenty of people reporting the same thing. Good luck & thanks for the video.

Haha, wow I actually full time in a Mesa Ridge 376FBH and I had the same thing happen to me lol, except it was the front black tank. Now I just start filling it up and go inside and watch the toilet checking it every couple minutes. You can tell its starting to fill up when the water in the toilet bubbles from the pressure when you flush it. I actually open up the toilet and watch with a flashlight until it starts filling up the pipe and then walk outside to flush it to get a really good flush. It fills up gradually enough that you have plenty of time to walk outside and pull the valve before it even comes close to overflowing.

I had a terrible experience when Keystone drilled out the black tank but left the core the "donut" in there what a disaster. Every time I was dumping I only got liquid, didn't realize till tank was full of solids. What a horrifying mess trying to liquefy the solids to get them out.

I've done that had to gut open my underbelly pull all the insulation out and left it wide open for three months re insulated the floor and closed up the belly wipes the vents out with bleach and have not walked always since I did that. We had just put in we linoleum through out that camper.

So I guess the trick is not to over fill your black water tank with fresh water. Would a 5 minute timer work well for all RV's? I wonder if the manufacturer recommendation would be to leave the black tank valve open while running the fresh water clean out? Maybe that wouldn't clean out the black water tank as well? I don't even own an RV. Just thinking about it.

From what I hear, having at least one poop-disaster happens to all RV'rs. Apparently it's the best training method to prevent future mishaps. You can get a pressure regulator that screws on at the park water spigot to control the pressure and keep it consistent. It will also help prevent any damage to your pex pipes due to high pressure water.

Says quietly, "poop is mud". So cute...

We never ever ever poop in the camper. We don’t put any paper products in the black tank either. We use happy camper chemical and get no odors. I keep the black tank closed until 3/4 full. I close the bathroom grey tank the night before I dump the black tank. I have a black tank flush on my 5th wheel and I back flash it 3 times or until it runs clear. I have a water meter on my black tank flush line so I know how full it’s getting. After dumping and back flushing the black tank I dump the grey tank to flush the hose. Then I use the black tank flush to add 3 gallons on water to the black tank, then add chemical to a full toilet and flush it into the tank. All done and I have never had an issue. I also add some tank valve lubricant every few tank dumps.

You can open the commode valve like your flushing it and look inside with a flashlight and see how full it is at any point.

Have you ever thought of eating peppermints after each meal could make your sewage smell better. Just a thought

My manufacturer has a sticker attached saying that you should only run the flusher with the drain open. I get that they are probably trying to protect themselves, but I don’t want to make the same mistake as you, so I’m leery to flush with it closed. However, I noticed the last time emptying my grey tank that there was a lot of sludge on the bottom. Do you have any good ideas about that?

Oh you poor thing! I so sorry about you sewer overflow. That said, you’ve helped so many folks! Is there a system where you can use the grey water to actually clean out your black? Unless there’s a pressure valve, I guess you contaminate your grey tank....

Got my cottage caravan permanently plumbed in and yes it is blocked! Got a plumber to see to it here in New Zealand way down under and nothing happened so got a flush kit to clean it out hopefully the plumber here yes in New Zealand charging up to 500.00 yes dollars will try and do this myself save some money

When I have my black tank flush on I just shine a strong spotlight that I have down the toilet (keep the foot pedal depressed) and you can see exactly where I water level is at. Plus in the beginning you can check the level of your black tank at the control panel too. Nice video.

So here's an idea....if your dish washing grey tank is separate from your shower water one, why not just leave the shower one open and the other one closed for flushing the hoses? Or....don't some campers now have fresh water flushes for the black tanks?

Problems with black tanks happen because most rvers don't know how to use them and are toooo stingy with water. Fill tank with water a lot and dump often, rinse often. When I leave camp I fill 1/4 full and add double chems while I drive home. The sloshing really cleans. If I can dump before another trip I fill to 1/4 again with double chem for another clean job before I get to camp. I never have any black tank issues including the gauge. Simple.

Everything I empty my blackwater tank I always say the classic National Lampoon Vacation line... "SH!TTERS FULL!" ;)
