How to enable and use Pentax Catch in Focus

Hi everyone, just a short video on how to enable and use catch in focus on a Pentax Camera. It's more of a "what settings are needed to make it work" video.
First thing you must do is enable the catch in focus setting in the menu. I completely forgot to mention that in the actual video.
1) Focus mode on the camera must be in Auto Focus.
2) You must use a fully manual lens, or a lens with a switch for Auto/Manual focus (switch must be set to manual focus).
3) Shutter button focus must be enabled (catch in focus does not work using back button focus).
4) Catch in focus does not work in live view, so you must use the view finder.
5) Press the shutter button all the way down and hold it there, turn the lens focus ring and once the subject is in focus, the camera will automatically take the shot.
That's really all there is to it!

I love this Pentax feature ! I'm 60 years old, bad eyes and some great old MF Pentax lenses 70-210mm F4 , a 200mm F4 and a 135mm F3.5 Sharp as all hell and now very usable. Now i hunt for some vintage MF glass when ever I can.

Thanks for this - didnt realise it could work just by switching the lens to manual - works a treat with the 70 -200 even in continuous mode - just wished the shutter could fire itself when focus hit, maybe one day.

Ya, that would be awesome if you could set it and walk away. Well, with a wired remote you can sorta do that.

2 things: I just learned that you can have it on AF2 in menu. Than you need to hold back AF before shutter release fully and CiF will work as it should. 2nd, it can't work in LV because contrast AF needs to fiddle back forth to find contrast, while phase AF already knows where to move lens, or in reverse - when to fire.

Thanks for sharing your findings! I will re-test with AF2. I had tried all the options, but I'll give it another go on both the K-30 and the K-3.

I just tried to make this work in AF2, and failed. Can you walk us through the steps so we can still use BBF?

@@speterlewis Af2 won't work for me either. Not sure how it's working for them. I've tried on 2 different bodies, it's a shutter button focus only feature from what I can tell.

Pro tip with this feature: If you set shutter to burst or whatever the multiple capture mode the cameras has, you can hold the shutter and maintain the catch focus feature continuously - rather than have to reset and shutter hold again and again. ... I find this is great for moving objects which are moving in an out of focus. Car races, swing sets, horse tracks, and humming bird watching. Etc...

Thanks a lot for this video. Recently purchased a K-3 and failed with Catch in focus. I just needed to switch to AF mode with my manual lens ))

@@Dark_Viking Nice! I did a challenge of shooting only with my SMC Takumar 55 1.8 for a while. The old lenses render something amazing! I need to get a 35 prime though for environment shots.

Sorry if I'm missing something really obvious but how does the camera know what you want to be in focus when the shutter releases?

It uses the same parameters as Auto focus but without the camera controlling the lens. So whatever you have in the center of the viewfinder will be what you want to capture. So as you move the focus ring, the cameras AF sensor waits until that spot in the center is sharp, then tells the camera to release the shutter.

When I used to do this with my film cameras I would prefocus on a place where a bird would land and used and locked a remote shutter release and the camera would take the image. I don not have a cord currently for my digital bodies so I wonder if the old way would still work.

Catch in focus is basically a built in focus trap so it should work once something goes into the plane of focus.

On DSLRs you would use an infrared remote control instead of a shutter release cord to trigger the shutter.

Hey Kobie I have the KP and none of these settings worked to do CIF. I was using a pentax 35-80mm manual lens was unsuccessful. any suggestions?

Unfortunately from what I've researched, it works a little differently on the KP. It won't work with a full manual lens. Make sure you're set on release priority in AF-S, you're using a lens that physically has a MF/AF switch (set the lens to MF) and make sure on the camera you're set to AF-S. I'm not sure if back button focus will work, it won't work on my K-3, I have to use the shutter button, so you may have to do that as well.

I just got this to work on my K-70 but I had to use the cancel AF option ?

Interesting. I guess the K-70 has a different focus reliance unless the "cancel" was cancelling back button focus.

Sorry for the delay, never got a notification that I had a comment. My apologies. In theory, yes. However, I've found and read from others experiences that not all manual focus lenses will work as intended. The lens mount expects a ground point from the lens coupling and not all lenses have bare metal to make that ground. People have used tinfoil to get around it. I just use lenses that have a manual focus switch to keep it simple lol.
