Doing ceramic floor tile is far less costly than the vinyl garage interlocking tile and is far, far more durable. At about $0.50 per square foot plus the cost of thinset and grout it isn't that much more expensive than the Epoxyshield (though I am going to use a more expensive epoxy grout). That's what I'm going to do to my garage to replace my nine year old Epoxyshield floor. The biggest thing I found with the Epoxyshield is that no matter how well the floor was prepped and the product applied, over time the heat and pressure from car tires coming home to park will soften it and eventually cause it to lift.

Great video. A quirky tip that i picked up when doing a job like this. If you are a stickler for even coverage of the paint chips, pick up a Hand-held Spreader used for applying grass feed or seed. Fill it up with the paint chips, and just hold it out and squeeze the trigger to get a really nice even spread!

I used Rust-Oleum Epoxy shield on my garage floor...9 years ago now and learned some lessons. One thing I learned then was that even though they are listed as the same color, the one gallon kit is actually different color shade than the two gallon kit. I had bought a one gallon kit to finish up a small area and it shows. It's not the most durable product. After 9 years it is showing significant wear and age. Outside the garage door that last six inches of slab where the sun hits the paint it has faded significantly. Where my wife's SUV parks on it it has lifted up over time from the heat of the tires (yes, the floor was properly prepped!)...couple spills and stains, lots of scratches and gouges from dragging car jacks across it...I use my garage. So I'm not planning on refinishing it with more epoxy paint. I'm planning on covering my garage floor with 18x18" format ceramic tiles in the near future (not vinyl, not plastic, not Swisstrax, ceramic!)...and really wish I had done tile back then. Ceramic tile done right is far more durable and will last the life of the house. I was doubtful until I saw it for myself. Porcelain tile of course would be stronger and more waterproof, but also wouldn't have enough texture to prevent slips when it's wet....and costs way more. The ceramic tile I'm getting works out to about $0.50 per square foot. If for some reason a tile were to break, it's relatively simple to pop it out and replace it. Anyway, I do like epoxy floors done right, and maybe the Epoxyshield isn't the best product out there to judge all epoxy floors against, but over the last nine years and the wear and tear mine has gotten...I wish I had known then what I know now, and if you're on the fence about using this product I can't honestly recommend it if you plan on owning your home longer than 10 years. I'm hoping to have my new garage tile done before this coming winter hits.

We did this project at a shop I worked at. We spent $3K on this special floor coating. We rented a concrete scraper, and a weekend crew was going to use it to remove the old paint. The scraper didn’t have the power they wanted, so they went back to the tool rental place for something more powerful. They got a concrete grinder, the grinder is more of a concrete removal tool. It put grooves in the concrete that were about 1/4 inch deep, and in a circular pattern. We came in Monday to this severely damaged floor with epoxy on it. It was long until the grooves were filled with dirt that couldn’t be removed. We went from an okay floor surface to a permanently damaged, expensive eyesore.
@BYOTools
@BYOTools 4 жыл бұрын
Uuuuuuuugh! That is so frustrating just to hear that. Sorry you had to go through that. Is there anyway you can at least wash the dirt out and pour more epoxy on it so it’s at least flat? Probably would cost big $$$ to do that though. Hope you enjoyed the video at least and thanks for sharing.
@Iexpedite1
@Iexpedite1 4 жыл бұрын
@@BYOTools They tested the grinder outside before using it in the building. They knew what kind of damage it was capable of. It was just the dumbest thing. A few years later we built a new building and moved out. I think that floor would have required a leveling pour and then new epoxy. None of us had the will to invest any more in that eyesore.

First off...great video! I had it saved in my "watch later'" folder because I really wanted to learn about applying garage epoxy for an unrelated project. You're really going places and you've done so many things right. The content is real and useful, the dialog is entertaining, you held my attention throughout, I learned that it probably is not going to work for my project lol, your cinematography is solid with well framed shots and b-roll, and you did well with lighting despite it being filmed in a garage, a catchy thumbnail, and so much more. Well Done Sir! A Job Well Done! ...A few things to consider looking into, more lights or more color correction in post production, replacing any muddled dialog during filming with voice overs in post, filming in a higher frame rate or use higher smoothing in post for cinematic shots. Thanks for the video

Nice Job! Looks awesome! If you were to do it over again, would you patch and grind prior to the clean and etch? My floor looks really similar, but I keep thinking that patch/fill the cracks, sand, and then clean n etch makes more sense. What do you say? Thanks.
@BYOTools
@BYOTools 3 жыл бұрын
Great to hear Silver and good question. In all honesty if I did this again I would most likely degrees the floor first, patch, and then grind the entire surface. I don't know if the etching did much and it takes just as long to do as just going over the entire surface with a grinder. Plus it just introduces more moisture to the slab, which is not what you want. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed.

Good video, pro tip, from a pro: toss that paint chips upward and let gravity disperse them back down naturally for a more even distribution of chips. Also, epoxy doesn't contract and expand at the same rate as concrete, so in areas where you have extreme temperature change from summer to winter you may see more areas of the epoxy failing. This is why we don't do epoxy floors anymore and have moved to concrete overlays. That, and it's a more sophisticated look. Nicely done though!

looks amazing! is the clear coat an optional step? Or is this needed to really seal and protect the floor? looks like it would be slippery
@BYOTools
@BYOTools 3 жыл бұрын
Great questions Michael and no it’s not a mandatory step but I highly suggest adding the clear coat for longevity. The floor is definitely slippery when wet but if it’s dry no worries at all. You can always add the anti skid mix, which does help for sure. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed

@BYOTools
@BYOTools 4 жыл бұрын
In all honesty i did see a slight color difference between the two colors but I think it is because I forgot to let the paint rest for 30min like i did with the first section. But I don't notice it at all now so it might have just naturally blended in after a while. Thanks for watching Tom and hope you enjoyed the video.
