I would personally tend to agree with using solos for EQ adjustments on individual instruments, but not on drums. Especially live drums. I think it is always best to hear things in context with the whole mix. Just because something sounds great by itself doesn't mean it will sound good with the rest of the mix. But it honestly boils down to personal preference and what works for you. It also depends with how your mix/mic strategy is set up for drums. Some people set up their overheads to get more cymbal sound and less drum heads, others set up the cymbal mics for a complete picture and use close up mics to accentuate that picture.
