How to Expand Storage Capacity by Adding Hard Drives
Today we will be adding in an additional hard drives to your Synology's NAS RAID Pool. Its super easy to do as long as you follow some simple rules.
1. Backup most important data on your NAS using Hybrid backup
2. Check S.M.A.R.T test results on drives to make sure it don't find any faults on the drives, if it does, replace them.
3. Try not to over work the NAS while its expanding the storage pool and rebuilding the RAID Array.
4. I am using SHR Hybrid RAID which means I don't have to fill all my drive bays at the same time and gives me the option of adding additional drives later on.

Just added an another 12 TB Ironwolf, first time that I added a disk to my existing DS923+ I did run a full smart test that took around 18h to complete before adding that drive to my existing RAID1. I switched from RAID1 to RAID5 in the process too.

Hi and thanks for the great channel. Can you possibly briefly explain process for upgrading to 2 larger capacity drives in a 4 bay system which already has 4 identical drives present? (Synology DS920+). I'm running low on volume and there are no drive errors. Does it matter which of the 2 drives you remove and replace? There are several KZfaq videos explaining this but they all seem to either replace failing drives or adding drives to vacant drive bays. Can't find any advice about replacing healthy drives in an already full system. Must you disable and then remove a drive 1st and then rebuild the Raid and then repeat with the next drive? NAS off or on and hot swoppable? Many thanks and once again, thanks for all your efforts with the great videos.

Hi, I have a Synology DS920 plus running 2 x 4tb wd red plus drives in SHR as a Plex media server. I've just ordered 2 more of the same drives to fill up the 2 remaining bays so my question is: Should I add the new drives together or 1 at a time? Many thanks in advance for any help 😊👍🏾

I'm about to buy a 8 bay nas and 2 18 tb drives harddrives are quite expensive so I was looking for if you are able to buy drives gradually and still have one volume if I understand this video right that is possibly right?

I've got a DS1620, 4x10TB and 2x12TB drives with about 50% storage. I tried to find your backup video, as commercial backup for that much data costs about £3k. For that much I could buy another NAS, or is that the point? Are there any cheaper options?

May be u could help. I have my synology with capacity for 6HD of 12 T each. - But somehow it only uses the capacity of 2HD when in reality there are 3 brand new disks. The same was when I had two I had only available 1HD. What am I doing wrong, and why I can't use all HDs? Thanks

What if I have Storage pool with 2 x 4TB drives in RAID 1, and now I want to add 2x 8TB drives to expand this storage pool. Synology shows me that If I add the 2x8Tb to this storage pool, its size will expand by 3.6TB only. What to do to get the 8TB expansion?

This system appears to be using "Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR). But often time other types of RAID are used. You can't add another drive to for instance RAID 1 without changing the RAID type.

Yes please I would like to see about building a simple basic NAS with comparison to just buying one. Also just how old of a board and processor could be used. Reason I ask is I have an old Gigabyte board (never used) with an AMD XP class processor. I have both a Barton and Thoroughbred core processor. Old IDE connectors with two Sata connectors on MB. If not useable then I will have to find a inexpensive board. I also have several older cases lying around. I'm sure I might be able to use some parts.

Maybe you guys to help me understand why use a very expensive Synology for storage expansion instead of a JBOD or DAS. (Different country) a 5 Bay Synology here is over $1000 where I can get an 8 bay JBOD for $350. Is it only for the RAID back up reasons? I mean you can use software like stablebit to the JBOD for pooling etc (Not a business or office backup). What am I missing? Its mainly for expanded movie storage for Plex. Backups are not hugely important.
